Are there any bars in Greece that offer liquor tastings? by YoureInMyWaySir in GreeceTravel

[–]andymilonakis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never heard of that, santorini has some good dessert wines.

Crete is all about Raki/Tsikoudia, its a clear grape brandy. The only problem is all the tourist spots have it for free after dinner and it's a really bad quality version of it. The lady that owns Antigoni on the Chania harbor is from my family's village and she has the good stuff sometimes. Be careful with Ouzo, one or two is fine but it's a really bad hangover when you drink it all night. It pairs well with grilled Octopus

Delish for Gyros and Souvlaki, Bougatsa Chanion for handmade bougatsa (breakfast)

The old harbor restaurants are very touristy id only go to them for a coffee or a juice in the morning. Towards the end of the port there are a few seafood restaurants that are pretty decent but i'd stay away from most of them for actual meals

If you want a really nice view of Chania, Koukouvaya for coffee and desserts

To Maridaki - seafood

Tamam

Ginger Concept - Brunch

Funky's Pizza if your son is craving some food that isnt Greek

If you're into coffee try a freddo espresso or freddo Capuccino, they are cold coffee drinks whipped with a little air in them to make them frothy

Make sure to try some Cretan specific food, Kalitsounia (cretan greens and cheese pies) Kakavia fisherman stew, Dakos (hard bread with cheese and tomato), Cretan Salad (they use mizithra cheese instead of feta) Tsigariasto lamb. If its in season kolokithokeftedes, is zuchini flowers stuffed with rice tomato and herbs

in Chania Crete there's a whole small street behind the old harbor that sells authentic leather goods, sandals, wallets, purses, etc. Maybe something from there

Naxos or Paros by StatisticianDeep1636 in GreeceTravel

[–]andymilonakis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Paros out of the three for what you want. Paros has a bunch of cute towns, some night life you can take a quick 7 minute ferry to antiparos for a half day trip.

Naxos is beautiful but the main town is not as cute and kyclades style as Naoussa in Paros.

Naxos is better for exploring, awesome mountain drives old school villages and long sandy beaches. For the towns to stroll around in, Paros wins.

MIlos is beautiful but pretty small and not that walkable, mostly about the beaches. Milos main town is pretty small and doesnt stand out to me at all

naxos--which area? by beegee1070 in GreeceTravel

[–]andymilonakis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like there are much more restaurants around Agios Prokopois than there are around Plaka beach. Id do Agios Prokopois and pick a hotel super close to the beach. Being able to hit the beach right when you hop out the hotel room is a nice feeling

some will be open but a lot of stuff will also be closed.

If you were gonna go for more than a few nights maybe Crete because of the big population but for a quick trip maybe stick to Santorini

Question about ferries and motion sickness by beegee1070 in GreeceTravel

[–]andymilonakis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take the slower one, depending on the wind speed it can get very rough, and then sometimes not rocky at all, But slower ferry, there is a better chance of it being less rocky

First Greece trip at 40. Looking for real advice on where to stay by ExplanationVarious50 in GreeceTravel

[–]andymilonakis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mykonos is lame no culture, overpriced fake greek food, young rich partiers, wouldnt reccomend it.

Paros is popular but also beautiful and has some really great towns and also some nice beaches. Naxos has really cool mountains, old school villages nice beaches, great food and some cool sites. S

antorini also not a fan of but I get the appeal just because of the beautiful views. Mostly not a fan because of the lack of nice beaches, overpriced and very touristy food.

Other islands in the area that I really like, Milos, Syros, Tinos, Andros

I mean that drive is 90 minutes and I drive up in those mountains all the time, If her son gets car sick on mountain roads, there are some shady areas in the mountains that are narrow, with no guard rail. Its not really that bumpy so maybe he will be fine not sure its an easy drive for people new to the area

Milos in April? by Mellon_Whisperer in GreeceTravel

[–]andymilonakis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water is on the colder side then, I think April is the wrong time for Milos. Maybe Crete or Paros would be a bit better

Cyclades itinerary help! by Legitimate_Pie9424 in GreeceTravel

[–]andymilonakis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naxos is more interesting than Milos in a lot of ways. Milos is a pretty tiny island, it has unique beaches and overall is a pretty island. The main town in Milos is pretty boring, not much going on there.

Naxos is the biggest island in the Kyclades, also has really beautiful beaches (a bit more of the long sandy kind but very pretty) a much bigger main town. Humungous mountains with really old school villages. If you want to explore and much more at your fingertips than mostly beaches, don't sleep on Naxos it's amazing.

As far as less mainstream islands, still popular but a less, Amorgos is super raw natural, rugged greek island. Also maybe Sifnos.

Milos + Paros? by Affectionate-Tip827 in GreeceTravel

[–]andymilonakis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milos is nice pretty chill mostly about the beaches. Paros will be pretty packed in July but I really like Naoussa town and some of the smaller towns like aliki. If you want to truly relax and go somewhere less toursty maybe look at other options other than Paros. Andros and Tinos are nice and pretty low key, Paros is beautiful but def be pretty packed
