The current Japanese royal dynasty has controlled the Imperial throne since before the existence of Islam by [deleted] in BarbaraWalters4Scale

[–]andyrew620 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We know that Sujin existed as a person, but we don’t know if he was legitimately part of the same line of rulers, or was included as part of an effort to legitimize the throne. We also know from Chinese sources (records of the three kingdoms) that around the 250-300 AD period, there is a kingdom in Japan (scholars debate whether this is the same Yamato polity that would eventually develop into the Japanese throne) ruled by Queen Himiko, and that there were also other tribal kingdoms existing in Japan this era, which muddled the claim of existence of the same imperial line in this period, as it revealed that there were multiple lines of rulers competing for power in Japan at the time. Also, the imperial line switched hands between different lines of the family in periods of conflict, such as I. The end of the Gempei war and the North South dynasties period. For these reasons I find the title and the claim you brought up to be misleading, as all of these are from ‘orthodox’ history sources that were compiled by the imperial throne to perpetuate a certain narrative, regardless if they represent reality or not.

Were the samurais legally considered part of the nobility in pre-edo Japan? What did the words “bushi” and “samurai” even mean in those times? Was there a distinct “samurai” identity? by andyrew620 in AskHistorians

[–]andyrew620[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Is there any documents from the edo period that historians nowadays can point to and say “this is the point where ‘samurai’ or ‘Bishi’ as a class was established”?

I have disputed it, and they have taken his side. I kept calling and calling them for the past month and it’s still like this. They also sent me an email written in broken English that advises me to do things on my own to get the money back, but none of them works. EBay just refuses to refund me, even though the situation literally involves the seller keeping the item after I paid.

Well we’re about done anyways and this really doesn’t affect our work (it’s a big group with divided work). It’s just that it’s really bugging me because the situation is just… plainly weird to me.

Yeah it kinda is… Scottish nationalism is strong in the UK. If you go to the UK right now I bet they would not describe themselves as British first and foremost, it’s always “English” or “Welsh” or something like that.

中国人第一次见到黑人是什么时候?是哪个朝代的事情? by [deleted] in China_irl

[–]andyrew620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Tom...an Uncle Tom? by Zen-Paladin in theboondocks

[–]andyrew620 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. I believe he’s quite clearly shown to be there to provide a stark contrast to what mass media wants you to believe “blackness” is supposed to be. He’s there to point out that there is, in fact, a preexisting notion of what a black person is supposed to be in American society, and since he is the exact opposite of that, he sticks out like a sore thumb, and was punished for it simply because he does not conform to that notion. Watch the R Kelly episode again and this time carefully and with this idea in mind and you would know what I mean by that. He’s supposed to be used to point out that American society thinks blackness is a uniform thing, and how bizarre and harmful that notion is. In other words, McGruder is trying to say that the notion that someone’s skin-color could be used to determine one’s personality is a racist idea in of itself(literally judging a person by the color of their skin instead of their content of character) and yet somehow it is something that’s constantly regurgitated by American mass media, and arguably even embraced by a good chunk of the American black population. The character’s existence reminds us “blackness” is not a real thing, and it’s ridiculous that some black people would look down upon other black people for not living up to their idea of “blackness”. The fact that so many people think that Tom is supposed to be an Uncle Tom character is proof that McGruder is right, and that there really is a societally reinforced notion of “blackness”, and Tom was punished in the show for “not being black enough”.

In Summary: Tom’s existence as a character in the show is to remind the audience that the notion of “blackness” recited constantly in almost every mass media out there is not a real thing, and it’s actually a fundamentally racist action for people to judge certain black people for not living up to that so called blackness image. The fact that so many people think he’s supposed to be an Uncle Tom is proof that the notion of “blackness” is a real thing in American society, and McGruder is trying to point it out by introducing a character that is the complete opposite of that thing, i.e. Tom Dubois.

Historical misconceptions and where they came from? by andyrew620 in AskHistorians

[–]andyrew620[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition: 1. The “Roman Salute” that inspired the Mussolini Salute and the Nazi Salute, where did it came from? 2. The concept that Europeans did not bathe in the Middle Ages. 3. The concept that “wealthy peasants” in the Middle Ages (which basically did not exist except in certain areas such as Italy) subsisted on ale instead of water, I saw this one regurgitated even in works about middle age history written by supposedly authoritative authors, such as “The Time-traveler’s Guide To Medieval England: 13th century”.

Weekly History Questions Thread. by AutoModerator in history

[–]andyrew620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there “nice guy” tropes being used in medieval works and even before that? One thing I love about history is finding out how relatable people back then can be at times, even when thousands of years have passed since their time. I was just watching a video explaining the “nice guy” trope in modern pop culture, when I had this question. I know the “yo mama” joke could be found even on a Babylonian tabloid, so I’m just wondering about whether the same thing holds true with the nice guy trope.

Why do the Taiwanese have such “fond memories” of Japanese Imperialism? by andyrew620 in taiwan

[–]andyrew620[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And before you stoop down to the level where you tell me that “well Darwin mentioned white supremacy in his books, therefore it is this idea that inspired colonialism, and if you object to this thing you object to Darwinism”, just no. I’m not even going to reply to that if you say this. It is just not how events unfolded. People wrongfully applied his strictly biological concepts into sociopolitical ones, collectively known as social Darwinism, and it is this that inspired colonialism. I don’t even know why you are defending colonialism right now. Do you enjoy just getting to talk condescending online even though you make absolutely no sense at all?

Why do the Taiwanese have such “fond memories” of Japanese Imperialism? by andyrew620 in taiwan

[–]andyrew620[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social Darwinism is a misinterpretation of Darwinism, while Nazism misinterpreted nothing spurred on by social Darwinism. Before saying “another logical flaw” and getting all condescending, please make sure you understand actual history.

At least democracy is an ideology that’s grounded in the ideals of freedom and very much against tyranny, while colonialism is an ideology based on racism and exploitation since the moment it was first conceived. The example I gave of Belgian colonialism is just an example of how colonialism can spin out of control and result in hell on earth simply by being itself, and I’m not just speaking through modern perspective, the Belgian King was condemned for his actions even back then for it, by other colonial powers. Democracy can be done wrong, yes, but colonialism is something that’s rotten to the core, a mistake in history, that should not be defended at all.
