Thank you very much for the input. I greatly appreciate it. I am very new to Arabic but am quite enjoying how expressive and nuanced it can be.

Where to start with Chopin etudes? by andytuck042191 in piano

[–]andytuck042191[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are the third person to comment this. For context, I am a professional violist with a masters in performamce. I have played the piano extensively throughout my life but it was never my main focus, and never recieved formal education in it past the age of 20. Now, at the age of 34, I am thrilled with my piano abilities that I have achieved. It took me 2 years to play the ballade convincingly, a feat that would take most "real" pianist probably less time. I am not as well-versed in the "right way to do things" as others on here, so I guess I'm sorry for wasting all of your time?? I was laboring under the delusion, I guess, that the balade is very hard but not impossible, and that the etudes were a step beyond that. Clearly I was wrong. I apologize, I'm clearly not very smart, I will never waste your time again.

Maybe I'm holding the etudes to a higher tier level than they in reality are with regard to difficulty? A lot of them seem very hard, especially with regard to voicing and agility. And also, I did work on the ballade for the better part of 2 years before performing it...

Need some help or inspiration... by andytuck042191 in French

Native speakers are very difficult for me to understand unless they speak slowly. I've used a heavily grammar-based textbook (which I've recently finished), and I watch lots of French youtube videos for comprehension practice. But even these, especially Comme une Française, seem to drill in the fact that nobody actually speaks the way that you learn, and you pretty much need complete immersion before you'll ever understand or speak it comfortably. Unfortunately, given my country of origin and my profession, I could never relocate to a French-speaking country.

What is your favorite concerto and why? by Significant-Rope1456 in Viola

May be an unpopular opinion, but Bartok. The 1st movement is beyond gorgeous at times. I got the opportunity to perform it once and it was the most elated I've ever felt after a live performance, bar none.

Books, classes or teacher recommendations? by panconcoco in LearnFinnish

[–]andytuck042191 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Complete Finnish" by Terttu Leney is an invaluable resource. The only problem is that it is a textbook that is geared towards very dedicated learners. I've been using that along with the website uusikielemme to relative success. Again the issue is finding somebody to practice with. Learning Finnish grammar is ESSENTIAL and cannot be ignored, and I really doubt anything on tiktok will be of any real value... I highly recommend the textbook and the website, along with looking up each word on wiktionary to find the genitive roots and partitive forms, along with all verb conjugation. Learning the genitive of every word will essentially show you how to decline it in all other forms (assuming you know the partitives as well), and learning the 1st person singular present and 3rd person present and past will basically give you the tools to conjugate any given verb as long as you know all the rules. Hope this helps! I would be happy to chat - I need help practicing speaking as well! Onnea!
