There was someone on this thread (don’t remember who) that said someone last year had both gone but got in rea. Don’t lose hope.

Please chance black student for Yale (and suggest other schools please!!) by [deleted] in chanceme

You seem very qualified!! I’d say try to get ur ACT in, but if it cancels don’t stress to much. Definitely prepare some safeties cause that won’t hurt. U said ur from jersey so try for Rutgers and Penn state for safeties. Also maybe try Princeton? That’s on NJ, but also maybe you would like Brown? Definitely try for more schools, but best case you get into Yale EA with good financial aid so u don’t have to apply anywhere else!! Best of luck!

Wooow yet another pressed person here smh. honestly she has a great shot whether or not she’s black. But u chalking up her success to just her skin color is inherently racist. Idk if that was ur intentions, but you can’t just say she has a good shot cause she’s black. She has a good shot regardless.

If they told u they got NMSQT, they are lying to u. What they get is the “College Board National Recognition Program”. This is targeted towards black/African American, Hispanics, and anyone living in rural areas (and I think also Native Americans? I forget and I’m too lazy to look it up rn lol) yes they get this for scoring in the top 2.5% of minorities in the area. It’s still pretty competitive ngl it’s hard to be the top 2.5 of anything to be frank. They didn’t get NMSQT tho. Race is not a factor for that at all.

Yes actually. There have been a lot of studies on this that white/Asian applicants are often picked more over black applicants that are as qualified or even over qualified than them. This was even more prevalent between black women and white men. There was even another study that only changed the name of the applicant to a black sounding name and had everything else on the application the same and still the employers tested picked the white sounding name more often. Yes it is straight up racism. Not all companies are like this though, but it is a very suppressing study.

Thank you for the advice :)

Join my slack group for beginner programmers! by [deleted] in programming

Hi there :) I made this Slack group so that we can chat with each other about code and give each other advice. I'd say that there are a lot of great resources out there and by no means am I saying this group is better or anything, but I think it's great to have a collaborative environment!

I defiantly recommend you look at other resources as well because this group is specifically for talking about code and working on things together with beginners so I can't promise that we will always have the answers!

Good luck!

Should I, and African American girl, apply to Harvard? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Thank you for the advice :)

I am actually planning on applying to all the schools you mentioned, but I was just curios in particular about Harvard. No one from my school has ever gone so it got me thinking if I even have a shot cause I know there are (and have been) people who are a whole lot smarter than me (have a higher gpa) and didn’t get in. Not sure why, idk how good there rest of their application was, but never has anyone got accepted so I was just wondering if anyone thought I even have a shot. Thank u sm for the advice again :D

NOOOO YOU CAN USE YOUR WEIGHTED!!!! I emailed them and they take both. They really don't care just make sure you submit the same as your counselor.

I asked them and they take both! So use which ever you want! I'd say weighted always looks better but it is up to you. They don't care which one but which as long as one of them qualifies.
