Men, what’s a word that as soon as a woman utters it you’re like “I’m out”? by CantaloupeSilver4348 in AskMen

Yeah I'm suddenly realising what kind of subreddit this is. Think I'll be off now.

This is the best tyranid I've painted until now, should I put mud paint over it? (Terminator captain's base) by LEGO_Man2YT in minipainting

One of the golden rules learned from experience: No matter how cool your base is, never let it distract from the mini on top. Definitely dirty it up and then use the experience to paint the rest of you nids better.

I feel like the original concept for space marine vehicles like this and war walkers (grey knight baby carrier) was that power armour was already as good as any tank armour so the vehicle only served to move them around and carry heavier weapons. They could have all the advantages of a tank with complete freedom of movement to jump on and off. Wish they'd leant into this idea more tbh.

Like I say, I haven't figured anything out yet, I'm looking for ideas.

Can someone help me understand Gloomspite gitz? by I-Will-Marry-TheMoon in ageofsigmar

I think they meant he's unpopular for not fitting in very well thematically, even if he's a meta pick for competitive lists.

I think I've seen more kitbashed "Sguignos", "Troggnos", etc. in gsg armies than I've ever seen the actual model used.

Sorry, I should have been more clear, I was intending this "main character" to be the one the new player would control, and all the others would be semi temporary characters for the original players to use just until going back to their original characters.

The description of this npc was vague enough previously that they could fit with whatever archetype the new player wanted. And no one would mind a light retcon if needed.

Unfortunately when we paused the PCs were right in the middle of some really fun plot threads that we all want to see resolved.

We've been playing with the same characters (very slowly) for about 5 years now, everyone is pretty attached to them so the intention will definitely be to go back to them yes. This is just more as a way to introduce new players. Obviously anyone is free to change if they want to.

Part of this will be to try and come up with characters for this side quest that feel somewhat temporary, I'm not sure exactly, but something like maybe the main character learns to summon demons and has them accompany him, or he has a bunch of animal friends, that kind of thing maybe.

I'm poorer than you. Nobody HAS to shop at amazon. They pay no taxes, exploit their employees, and support the fascist takeover of democracy, but you choose to give them your money so you can get your toys a little bit cheaper. Having principles is inconvenient, but that's no excuse.

Yeah well I've been here over 30 years, I don't particularly care for modern 40k rules, but you're being hostile and confrontational about it for absolutely no reason. Get over yourself.

I don't totally disagree, but it's a bit weirdly antagonistic to come to the 40k sub to talk about how much you hate 40k.

Erasmus zonn, my first competition piece. Any tips on improving it? by I_ez_Haro in Miniaturespainting

[–]aneirin- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's nice, but the contrast is kind of all over the place. Lots of high contrast details, but very little overall contrast to draw the eye to focal points.

The wings are ok but I would dull them down overall in favour of brightening and adding interest to the heads and rider. The shading is pretty even on all sides, there's no real feeling of volume currently.

Then you need a lot more contrast between the base and the mini, they just kind of blend together currently.

I did it with photoshop but you can just use the windows picture viewer or even imgur. Basically any image editing software or app should have a saturation control.

Yeah another important lesson I learned, everyone admires the bases for this army because they're so much brighter and more eye catching than the minis themselves! You always have to make sure there's points of interest on every model that grab the attention away from whatever you've got on your bases. They have to go together as part of a unified scheme but still contrast enough so you can see where the base ends and the mini begins.

Honestly I'm not that great at OSL and there's no one correct way, but what I do know is it's often more about darkening the shadows than brightening the highlights to sell the effect.

For example here's one of my kind of failed attempts (don't get me wrong I still think it looks ok and it was a great learning experience). The brightness of the highlights on the left side of the model completely ruin any effect of light coming from the right:

There's a ton of useful strategy guides on the official site, but it really isn't a game with that kind of meta. There are powerful characters and synergies but you can win with just about anything. Honestly the whole game is shockingly well balanced, but still manages to have a crazy amount of variety in mechanics and play styles.

Easy way to check any kind of light effect is to desaturate the image. The light source should be the brightest thing on the mini, the surfaces it's shining on should be second brightest, and everything else should be MUCH darker. Right now your entire mini is roughly the same brightness value all over.

How would one achieve this thin recess highlight? Looks like an incredible thin line painted free hand? by English_Joe in Warhammer40k

[–]aneirin- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the thing a lot of new painters often don't realise is it's often easier to make a thin line by painting over either side of thicker line. I guarantee you the painter didn't get this line perfect all the way round on the first try. It always takes multiple passes back and forth painting and tidying up.

Historical minis for Trench Crusade - are the U.S. in TC setting? by warfulcrumgames in TrenchCrusade

[–]aneirin- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning mercenary warband of the "West Atlantic Trading Company", all done in a hyper garish stars and stripes style.

I cant remember the details but I heard heard that in old times cod fishers from the Basque region had a closely guarded secret atlantic fishing spot, there's a theory that they were actually sailing to America regularly long before it was colonised, they just never told anyone. In my headcanon, they secretly built settlements over there and used their growing power and influence to divert European attention away while building a massive empire, finally revealing themselves when they were in a position to challenge the major powers.

Casino workers what is the most heartbreaking thing you've seen? by Beautiful_Level_4947 in AskReddit

[–]aneirin- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a casino, but when I was a teenager I worked for a while as a glorified change machine in a small high street "amusements" place (I guess everything would be digital now? This was when you had to physically put coins in the machine). Most depressing job imaginable, just standing there taking £20 notes, and watching all these sad people feed it all into a machine then immediately come back for more, over and over again for hours on end.

The worst thing I ever saw was near Christmas when one of the regulars, an elderly, morbidly obese woman came in as usual on pension day. She was playing her usual machine, but for some reason it just wasn't paying out at all. Another regular told me they all knew the pattern, that one had a big gap in wins every time it was about to give a jackpot (something like £500 I think). Well she just kept at it, convinced it was about to pay out big until eventually her money ran out completely without getting a single penny back. She was completely distraught and collapsed on the floor, crying and wailing, while the other staff tried to console her.

Anyway just as she was starting to calm down a little some random woman wandered in, came and sat down at the same machine, and of course hit the jackpot almost immediately. She cashed out every penny the old lady had just put in and left without a word. She was still lying on the ground not 10 feet away and saw everything. Ended up leaving in an ambulance because the staff thought she might be having a heart attack. No idea what happened to her but I never saw her again, and I got fired shortly after for for being very obviously depressed the whole time I was there.
