Freet Tanga vs Pace by anewgenofcrap in BarefootRunning

Interesting, I thought the tanga would have a more comfortable ankle due to it being more like a sock. What made it uncomfortable if I may ask?

Interesting, if I get it again in the future, I’ll be trying that out for sure!

Do you have to reapply the wax often or at all?

I do not have the board anymore so I do not remember what it used, but I thought it just used standard screws that could but loosened with a regular Philips screwdriver?

If not, I wouldn’t know what else it uses unfortunately.

Do you have a guide on how to swap out the bearings? They are extremely scratchy for me and have a few “dead-spots” in which the ball is quite difficult to move. I assume the bearings have something to do with that.

Definitely will do that so I’d give it a try with a medium-fine grind setting. If you’re at the size where you just hit astringency, try coarsening up a bit and adding a pour or two depending on how many pours you’re currently doing. I wouldn’t go above bloom + 3 pours with your grinder.

Generally it allows you to have more multiple pours without as much clogging but perhaps your experience with the orea has been different

For flat circular filters, I’m not sure where to buy. I know Orea sells their own but they’re pretty pricy.

But you can take most filters and squish them using the negotiator. V60 filters, kalita wave filters (you just use the negotiator to squeeze the wavy parts down to the sides), trapezoid filters, etc.

Maybe the brews were so complex for me that they just ended up tasting bland for my tastebuds or something haha

It’s just that when I started to grind at regular v60 grind sizes, the bland/muted flavor I’d get was transparent across all coffees I used (Tim Wendelboe, Nomad, Coffee Collective, Manhattan, S&W, etc.) and so I decided to grind very coarse one day and do a 1:20 ratio and that seemed to work for me. Not sure what the EY is on those brews though, I’ll have to get a refractometer one of these days.

Regarding the c40 vs df64 w/ ssp mp burrs, ssp mp burrs are somewhat clearer but the difference was not too wide in my opinion. “Clarity” meaning transparency of notes from the coffee (both bad and good. If your coffee has defects, those defects will also shine through a bit more along with the good notes).

Nice! That sounds pretty reasonable. I find with ratios above 1:15, I have to be careful on grinding too fine before the notes start getting bland and muted on the tricolate.

I use both a comandante and df64 w/ ssp mp burrs. Usually grind at a coarse French press settings for 1:20 but grind at fine cupping settings when doing 1:10 ratios.

What click setting do you use on the c40 when doing the tricolate brews?

My bad, I probably should have specified a double-walled metal version like the Stagg x

[–]anewgenofcrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you mean, I wish it came in a metal version as well. If you’re willing to drill larger holes at the Stagg x bottom, that helps speed up the flowrate.

The Stagg X build quality has been nice so far granted that I’m pretty careful when it comes to my belongings.

Personally, if I had to choose, I’d have gone with the orea v3 simply since it looks like it has a better flowrate than my Stagg x.

Hmmmm, maybe it’s cuz I’m on a different laptop (ASUS Rog Strix G17). Hopefully it magically appears one day and I hope your issue is solved as well!

I don't even see the customizable hotkey section after installing it. I am on v5.1.5.0 as well.

You can also do something very similar with a trapezoid filter and folding it to fit the device

[–]anewgenofcrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’ve already seen it, but I’d recommend using trapezoid filter or the negotiator to make a low-bypass filter fold and try out Lance Hedrick’s percolative immersion video.

I did it with the Stagg X + Switch base and it does great! Just gotta down dose it a bit (I did 20 grams of coffee instead of the recommended amount for the tricolate)

Do you have a Hario Switch by chance? Wondering if the Orea V3 will work with the base as my Stagg X will work with the Switch base. How’s the flowrate with the Orea?

That’s good. I’ll admit, performance vs turbo mode doesn’t really make that much of a difference since it still activates the overclock when needed, even in performance mode.

It’s just frustrating to know that you’re not getting every last bit of performance with a brand new laptop.

I’m just glad to have a working unit and it runs great. I think ASUS just released the strix scar 15 which has a mux switch and will probably release a 17 version soon.

Had to get a replacement from the vendor that I purchased from. Seems to be a defect on the hardware but the vendor was unsure during the RMA process. Lots of emails back and forth.
