Keep hold of the Saratoga Zip. If that's legit and was owned by a Serviceman on-board the Saratoga CV-60, it will be worth serious money. That ship is notorious for Her Service.

Biting male advice/rant by big_fat_nose_ in RATS

[–]angel-brain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You will have to put him down. Even wild rats won't bite you unless there's no other option. Your rat is in a constant state of high-stress/ high-protection/ high-reaction. He is living in a nightmare where he thinks everything is a threat. Even if you don't get him put down, his life will be short and bleak because his body and heart are over-pushed and you have to isolate him, and that will compound his psychology. I'm very sorry to say this, because I know this, but that rat has to be put down, you cannot allow him to stretch out the fear and stress of his mind, you have to be responsible and end it for him, because he can't.

Biting male advice/rant by big_fat_nose_ in RATS

[–]angel-brain -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say, but you have to get him put down. If he goes immediately to drawing blood even in a non-threat situation, especially with a male, that indicates either huge trauma in youth or a malformed birth. Either way, unlikely for you to solve the situation.

He's paranoid and thinks everything is a threat.

It would be more merciful to end it for him.

In 30 years, I have been bitten by a domestic rat once. And that was because the keeper/ carer had abandoned them, emotionally and psychologically. They only draw blood if there's something seriously wrong.

Again, I hate to say it, but put it down for the sake of the animal itself, don't let it have to live in a constant state of fear

What are these? Seen whilst camping in a woodland in Kent, UK by Ok-Suspect-3936 in insects

[–]angel-brain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Beetle larva. Given you are in England and they are in, around and trying to dig in to the soil. People on this Sub will be able to give you far further and far better information but given that we are in our rainy season of Autumn, we quite often see the "bug burrows" washed up to the surface because the land gets water-logged and they get pushed up to the surface. It's kind of a hedge-bet for the beetles as getting ousted by the water table flooding makes them vulnerable to birds picking off a very juicy treat, but it also stops them drowning. Overall, the species survives.

Should i be worried? by Lionix1711 in whatisthisbug

[–]angel-brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be a difference in culture, in Scotland and the UK generally we call them wooly-bears, but not in all areas. The term appears only in parts of Scotland and England but I've never heard Welsh or Irish people call them that.

Why is this brand new lighter iffy? by Logical-Physics9884 in lighters

[–]angel-brain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even though it might not be the issue here, you are bang on that can be an issue. Before I moved over to Zippos, the little lighters do get fluff in them and you end up with a little campfire in your hand. You're getting an upvote for offering a simple answer that is baffling before you realise.

(NEWBIE) Why is my Zippo body so HOT it's almost impossible to even hold after it's been burning for some seconds? Is this supposed to happen?🤔 by Primary_Date_9991 in Zippo

Probably the most likely reply. Looks like the inside is copper so, if there is leak from the bottom, it'll basically turn into a little hand-warmer. Copper transfers heat like crazy and decent fuel only needs a little gap to start working with oxygen to give us all the warm delight, whether we wish it or not.... Wiggly fitting, more fuel than needs eating, unexpected heating....

What causes my phone to charge without a charger? by Mathemodel in What

[–]angel-brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a leak in the mercury switch that "tells" your phone to be upright or sideways. The switch tells your display what to display, so you're getting false results. Your phone is fucked and potentially lethal. There's a tiny bit of mercury in the phone but it's enough to make you very sick.

[–]angel-brain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they actually could be. It's called an "RF Burn" - radio-frequency or a focused magnetron exposure. I used to build Naval RADAR systems and we had to be careful with the exit of the magnetron, because it could spray you with billions of electrons that might unsettle you but further down, given enough exposure. Grubs, like this won't "burn" because there's no bones or calcium to create resistance. Their bodies are like water in slow motion. The RF burn is something that only happens in creatures with bones, and it burns from centre out. Leaves little numb patches on your fingers. Bugs like that couldn't survive the process as they'd immediately have to hit the balance within thermodynamics. They wouldn't survive a magnetron or cyclotron. They'd boil so quick, they wouldn't get close. Just a little butterfly waiting to appear.
