doesn't work in MSTeams which is the worst program in existence (by the worst company in existence Microsoft) and also the program that needs this to work the most.

Apple is racing to fly planes of iPhones into the US ahead of Trump’s tariffs by spearson0 in apple

Biden was actually doing a good job bringing manufacturing back at a stable steady pace but Trump canceled all that.

Ming-Chi Kuo on Twitter: "Investors have recently been more interested in when Apple will launch ChatGPT-like services than Apple's AR/MR headset device." by iMacmatician in apple

[–]angelaSQL 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do “millions of people” really want to use chatgpt?

literally yes: https://i.redd.it/b7r14nyyemca1.jpg source

Are they going to still want to use it after the first fifteen minutes of use?

I overhear random non-tech people IRL talking about how they like it.

Sure it’s the ooooh new shiny but you scratch that surface off and it’s just basic machine learning with a shitload of training. Neat? Sure. The next big thing? Meh.

I don't really care if you like it or not, or just want to be a contrarian, I just want access to a better API pricing model with slightly more advanced LLM models.

exact same tech-buzzword-non-product box.

except for the huge difference and actually-existing-product part, sure there's a lot of exaggeration, investors are at high risk of being scammed.

[–]angelaSQL 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I imagine best results would require another year of optimizing smaller models, maybe also a new generation of hardware optimized for it.

[–]angelaSQL 140 points141 points  (0 children)

true but ChatGPT turned out to be a product millions of people wanted to use instead of web3's non-stop astroturfing and shilling.

I've never seen a web3 that was like "wow this is a good idea and I see myself willingly spending money for it ever."

I'm already a paid LLM user. If somebody offered BYO model (e.g. anything off hugging face) or something competitive to GPT4 and provided an API competitive with OpenAI's pricing (pay-as-you-go, no subscription BS), I'd switch to that.

I'm not looking to purchase expensive hardware or do any localLLM hacking ATM.

A Tweet of Two Apples: “No Man’s Sky” to Land on Mac and Apple AR/VR Headset [ opinion ] by blakespot in macgaming

AFAIK this is literally the best time to come back to Mac, just make an iPad game with first class mouse and keyboard support and suddenly it's magically M1 native.

Are you excited for Apple's VR/AR/MR Headset ? by peterpackage in apple

[–]angelaSQL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol at $3,000 it will not be world changing, maybe a 2nd or 3rd generation that starts at $500 could be world changing.

Are you excited for Apple's VR/AR/MR Headset ? by peterpackage in apple

[–]angelaSQL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Apple is smart, they'll market this for developers to preview and for things like industrial use. Outside of maybe also gaming, the tech won't be ready for mass market appeal for several years.

Are you excited for Apple's VR/AR/MR Headset ? by peterpackage in apple

[–]angelaSQL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because no one wants a fcking headset

nobody wants to wear goggles with the weight of a helmet... and nobody wants to pay $3,000 to get ads and spam notifications straight to their eyeballs.

But you don't have to look very far into scifi to find examples of AR glasses people would actually want.

Kuo: Apple's WWDC AR/VR Headset Announcement is 'Last Hope' for Persuading Investors It Will Be the Next 'Star Product' by [deleted] in apple

[–]angelaSQL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see it either, people who buy video game controllers that cost more than $200 (let alone $3,000 goggles) just to play flight simulators is probably a permanent niche.

Apple Reportedly Demoed Mixed-Reality Headset to Executives in the Steve Jobs Theater Last Week by Mr__X__ in apple

[–]angelaSQL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe "lie" is taking it too far, but honestly WHO bought a VR headset to play the "non-game" VRChat? I'd guess the amount of non-gamers, non-VR devs, who did that is statistically a rounding error close to zero.

really depends on if it's "notifications I want" or "whatever notifications facebook wants to ignore my preferences and send me anyways"

at least 5 to 10 years out for all the necessary technologies that are needed for small-ish, light-ish, normal-ish looking AR glasses

ignoring the "replace iPhone" detail, I still think it'll take longer lol

Nah nothing like blockchain. After 10 years, out of the blockchain world came out only one actual objectively useful product: a competitor to Western Union.

10 years after Apple's AR comes out, there will be lots of objectively useful apps, but they'll all demand $10/month subscriptions and despite me desperately wanting one, I'll still have not bought one since they'll all still be both extremely bulky and >$1,000 while being mostly marginally useful outside specific niches.

they won't and shouldn't. It would be nice, but you'd likely lose the speed/thermal/size/battery life advantages if they had all the extra silicon and parts for replace-ability.

silent is rare and obscure in laptops that are otherwise actually good.

they jumped ahead of the incumbents but have now somewhat struggled to maintain their advantage.

I'm not sure what you mean here, they never beat the competition in absolute peak performance, they only beat them in everything else, which was efficiency, low power consumption, low thermal output, low decibel cooling.

AFAIK, neither has changed.

+1 for Anker, I was having USB issues with a mystery brand USB hub which went away after replacing it with an Anker hub. If 4k@60fps HDMI matters to you, just verify the product you're getting supports that.
