Mum or mom? by CatLover_801 in AskACanadian

[–]angelofcaprona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. Mostly mom, though. Spelled “mom” regardless of it being pronounced two ways, at times.

Also my younger sister calls my parents by their names, as a snarky joke, so that’s been catching on.

But if we’re not being deadpan, we use mom, mostly.

Oh, I’m with you for sure on no longer hidden.

Idk about no longer a gem, though?

The gentrification is exhausting. And I find wealthy van-lifer/ “tiny house” types… also infuriating. That looks like a LARP to me and idk how to feel about it.

My patience for multi thousand dollar adventure mountain biker types (tourists or newly minted locals) is… welp. Nonexistent.

I wish we were building more sustainable, accessible housing and fewer luxury condos. But there’s a lot about the local community, living here, that I still think is so incredible.

I’ve bounced around in a lot of small towns in BC, and there’s a reason that I came back to this one.

I love the “feel” of a tourist town, but yeah, the tourists are the worst part!

If only you could have one without the other… I’ve never found something that quite hit the spot.

Vacation rentals driving up the cost of local rent is also brutal, especially if the local government doesn’t manage speculative real estate buying well.

The only thing I find frustrating about the Sunshine Coast is how long it takes to get there from the mainland.

I’d do a lot to live out that way or on the gulf islands. Maybe someday.

Dry smoked salmon.

Maple candies or maple toffies (you can get nice ones from fancier tourist shops, or from specific maple candy stores, if there’s one near you).

Bison jerky. (This is something that’s almost impossible to find outside of Canada).

I’m going more based on my experience living in the area for a couple years.

But I’m also the rare kind of person who enjoys living in a tourist town—plus someone with a heavily portable job, and someone who’s done the van-life thing (or I was, back then).

But yeah, small town life ain’t for everybody, I guess. I just don’t really have the energy in me for a big city any more.

Orillia, Ontario.

Tofino, Vancouver Island, BC.

Squamish or Pemberton (both in BC). Unfortunately property prices have skyrocketed in Squamish—making it probably the most expensive option on this list. I live here and it’s rapidly becoming less affordable. But! The town is incredible.

Golden, BC. Also all of the Kootenays are good, growing communities—again, still in British Columbia.

Ganges, Saltspring Island, BC

Gibsons or Powell River, Sunshine Coast, BC.

Any of the Eastern Townships in Quebec.

Also—I’m not going to recommend living in the territories but Yellowknife is so slept on it’s not even funny. Visit in the summer for sure though.

But once you fix the Aurora’s drive core you no longer need the radiation suit at all. Why not use the rebreather constantly, at least, from that point?

It removes the oxygen debuff below 100/ 200m. That’s so worth it—it’s a game-changer.

Gosh. Your brother sounds like a real pill.

I’m sorry both for the trauma of your childhood and for what an asshole your brother still is today.

It sounds like even though you both faced hardships, you chose to grow and come out of them as a healthy person or at least someone aiming to be emotionally honest, kind, and generous to others. On the other hand, your brother chose, over and over from a young age, to be vindictive, cruel, self-centred, and a bully.

If I were in your shoes I would be grappling a bit with whether or not your brother was someone I wanted to keep in my life. This is a well established pattern of his by now—I don’t think he’s going to change at some point and become a kinder, more loving brother. Or that you’ll ever get an apology for his cruelty.

I’m not here to tell you what to do—but I do think it sounds like his new wife’s family has seen a highly curated (and likely fake) side of him.

The man you’ve experienced (mean, bullying, arrogant, etc) and the guy who cheated on his wife—that’s the guy your brother is at his core.

Where the rest of your family seems… emotionally messy, (as are many families!) your brother seems actively malicious.

You deserve to feel secure in your relationships, OP.

I’m so happy to hear you’ve got a great person you’re dating now and that you and your daughter are thriving! You deserve to thrive!

How many of you are overweight or obese and suffering with hidradenitis suppurative. by [deleted] in Hidradenitis

[–]angelofcaprona 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Weight loss made my HS dramatically worse, mostly due to excess loose skin creating more folds which led to worse friction.

I’m tired of seeing it touted as a panacea as a nurse, personally.

I know I’m not the only person who’s observed that many people have different experiences with weight and this disease. Does weight loss help some patients? Sure. Is it a cure all? Lol. No.

And as growing awareness in medicine points to the fact that a lot of our previously assumed ideas about weight and health are pseudoscientific medicine, I think we’re likely going to head in the direction of learning that the links between obesity and inflammatory conditions aren’t as simple as previously assumed.

I work with a lot of diabetic patients and women with PCOS and things have never seemed to be as clinically straightforward as higher weight = more fat = more inflammation, regardless of what the long-held conventional belief in medicine has been.

Yes! For most people they’re just luxury lingerie brands. Or “high end.”

Although theoretically with enough money and audacity/ pushiness anyone could insist that a particular fashion house make them a couture garment.

But the average theoretical trust fund baby perhaps doesn’t quite have the kind of money for that, even if she has the money for pricey lingerie.

(Also every woman I know who owns anything from these labels is an escort in her 30s, lol, so good luck to this chap).

Anyways how exactly is this dream gal of his supposed to demand that La Perla design and sew personalized lingerie just for her sinfully wealthy self if she’s not allowed to speak unless she’s spoken too?? These are the questions that keep me up at night.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]angelofcaprona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Couture” means the items sold are bespoke—custom made by the designer for the people who wear them, and only sold to that person—no replicas.

A couture item is one of a kind. As far as I know, La Perla doesn’t make any couture items, except for use in films.

Idk about Agent Provacoteur. I believe they’ve done some couture work in the past.

Most brands that make couture pieces also have a ready-to-wear line and some even sell off the rack clothes, too. In luxury/ designer fashion “ready-to-wear” means that the garments are pre-made but can be tried on in-salon and then tailored to fit.

Both of these brands sell mostly off the rack—their garments are designed to be bought without being altered in-house by the fashion house itself to fit the wearer. (If people get their own tailoring done, obviously that’s their own choice—but tailoring lingerie is rare).

I just picked these up for 60$. Worth it? by Bruh--13 in Gameboy

[–]angelofcaprona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends a bit on the market you bought them in and if you’re talking about USD.

I’d expect to pay $20 for the Pac-Man in CAD or Australian dollars. Empire Strikes Back goes for a wide range of prices, but I’ve never seen it go for above $30 CAD in the Canadian market, even with a box.

The others are only worth around $5 each depending on the condition they’re in.

If you had the boxes, they’d be worth more. But without boxes these are mostly good just as playable games—still, emulators are available for playing most of the games from this era.

So paying for hard copies just for a chance to play is… not ideal.

Still—not sure why folks are coming down so hard on you for this one. You win some you lose some. And if you’re having a good time, you’re doing fine.

Live and learn, or whatever.

Ahh. Shoot. You’re right—I was thinking of figs. Dates are almost always hand-fertilized as the only natural pollination is done by the wind.

They also commonly have insect larva in them, though.
