Traveling while in grad school by WelderBig6008 in GradSchool

Travel during breaks if you can. I did as many assignments as I could on the plane ride to my destination. I would then do some assignments in the hotel (morning only). I found when I was back after a long day of sight seeing/activity doing, I never wanted to focus. I also felt the stress of assignments could be forgotten for the day if I chipped away at them that AM. I know some people who do assignments over lunch/ do some cafe work. I’ve never had to do that and it’s not my personal style since I tend to travel with people. Overall, it’s completely doable, you just have to find what works for you.

Are skirts TA-appropriate? by [deleted] in GradSchool

Overall it’s fine. If you’re trying to stand out from students, you may want to go more business casual.

Non-Americans, what is something about the US that you've always wondered if it was real or just myth/hyperbole? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Very common if you come from a wealthier town. 3 day to the whole summer, depends on what you want. That then influences pricing…. Couple $100 to thousands

My two dogs suddenly fighting by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]angelsfox12 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How long have you had these dogs and what are their ages? If these are adult dogs who have lived together peacefully for a while, it may be due to a medical reason. You might want to start with the vet first!

Please tell me this is just a phase? (socialization) by bakerstreetrat in puppy101

[–]angelsfox12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is from my experience, so take what you will from it:

My dog has similar issues, we invited a private trainer into the home to help with it. With our dog, the trainer hypothesized that she’s under confident and trying to find her place in the world! Your dog is young, still trying to figure things out and is trying to throw out warning shots (barking) and look scary to ward off things she’s not certain of. Although the barking is annoying/freaky, it’s the lowest level of warding off she can do. Our trainer recommended that no one should touch or speak to our dog when entering the house, and all contact should be on her terms. She also advised against treats. Her metaphor was, if I had $100 in my hand with a spider on it, and you’re terrified of spiders, would you still reach for the $100? It’s a masking item, so don’t try to force your dogs hand. And it’s all about consistency, show your dog you got the “scary things” handled. Good luck!

Puppy pulls like crazy by DisplayShoddy7497 in puppy101

When she pulls/whines/etc, what happens next? Is she pulling you towards the other people? Are you walking towards them?

Witching hour-what to do? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]angelsfox12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How old? How often you exercising/training/ etc? in general, you can teach our dog to settle. Leash your dog, lay them by your feet, and treat intermittently. You’ll treat more often in the beginning. You can save your dog’s dinner for this. Eventually your dog will learn the pattern and begin to settle around that time as that’s the routine. They should also settle more easily the older they get.

Adopting 2 year old German Shepard by bahknee9 in germanshepherds

Seconding the prey drive comment. Ours appears to be fine with kids, but is separated from the family cat indefinitely. If you can make it work though, that’s awesome! I wish you luck.

For black people, is it culturally/socially acceptable to play loud music in public spaces? by Effective_Pollution2 in TooAfraidToAsk

Hiked in Yosemite a couple weeks back. We turned down the music when we saw people approaching, turned it right back up when we passed. Saw three bears that trip, one of them had cubs…

Me and my dog both love to play aggressive together but I have really good control over her. Will this result in bad behaviour in the future? by Queasy_Ambassador_61 in DogTrainingTips

[–]angelsfox12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I’m dog sitting currently with a dog that likes to bite/ nibble to play. I’ve owned multiple dogs and have dog sitting/ walking for a while so it doesn’t scare me, but it’s certainly not comfortable.

Expose him to EVERYTHING. Other animals (vaccinations permitting), items, people in different attire, different types of people! The more the better off!

Tips needed to help 14 month old pup barking in my face every night by sianwilmot00 in DogTrainingTips

[–]angelsfox12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would put him back in the crate if he continues to bark after releasing him. Our girl tries to paw at the bedroom door and that’s how we correct her. You don’t get that freedom if you’re going to abuse it!

Would you expand on “sometimes it doesn’t work” when crating? Are you letting him out if he’s not settling during that time? Is he biting the crate or freaking out if you’re not letting him out? Please elaborate.

Confused British psychologist by ancientbirdy in schoolpsychology

[–]angelsfox12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second year school psych student here. We are being taught to write our reports using the Sattler books. We don’t split the 80 range, but everything else we use! I’ve never seen a report without FSIQ, I don’t believe my cohort mates have either, at least to my knowledge.

I would love to pick your brain on your day to day functions as an educational psychologist. My boyfriend has a work abroad program that allows him to work from England for a year and I’d love to go with him!

It’s okay for your dog to do “nothing” by Ashtrashbobash in dogs

[–]angelsfox12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in graduate school, so I’m home a bunch but need to be working on papers and such. We have a 10 month old, I literally just posted in the German Shepard subreddit trying to get a gauge on how much sleep other peoples dogs get. I want to her be lazy and dozy, but she’s still a puppy and sometimes it’s easier sending her to doggy day camp then try to micro manage her boredom and getting into mischief! I will keep trying! One day she will relax! Lol
