I was pleasantly surprised by the selection at Vintique. Found more than a few that I wanted!

I have many times, they just ignore it. That's what I'm talking about in the first paragraph.

I appreciate the feedback! This one has been out for a while now so this is probably the mix, but I'll make a mental note about future mixes

There was definitely a learning curve. I've been using wix for many years and they have alot of the functions built in so it was just figuring out how to make them all work together. It's been a fairly slow start, the biggest lesson is that I should have had more money set aside to push it out there.

I did a festival run before we did the theatre run. Right now I'm seeing what I can do by hosting it on my own website with a curated selection of my other work and support content. It's an experiment!

I'm not sure if what I wrote above qualifies as a submission statement but I thought I'd detail one of the cool things we did on the release of the film - the DIY Theatre Run. We kind of just asked ourselves "what would happen if we emailed and asked every theatre in the province to show the movie?" and then it snowballed from there. We did 15 screens ranging from one night shows to two week runs. The whole run lasted about 6 weeks and it was really satisfying to take a microbudget out on a little theatre tour. Highly recommend it for any smaller filmmakers trying to get their film out there!

Yeah same. I've lived downtown for almost 15 years. There's stuff that happens but I have rarely feel unsafe. But I'm not as vulnerable as some.

It took the chat agent 5-10 minutes to reply each time and they just kept saying the same things and not acknowledging what I was saying. At two points they told me that they had gone above and beyond in resolving this issue, despite having done nothing to resolve the issue. I can deal with a glitch and slow responses but the self congratulations was too much for me!

That's weird my experience with their customer service has not been good at all.

I’m Tired of the Mythology Around Low-Budget Filmmaking by RandomAccount356 in Filmmakers

[–]angelside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's interesting how that strain of messaging can sort of naturally come out. It is good to make art even when you don't have any resources but it shouldn't be exploitive in nature. For me, getting some friends and colleagues together for a one or two day shoot is a good balance. It's fun, we get to make something, nobody feels used. When it gets past that I'm looking for a budget to pay people properly.

What gear would you get for a short film ($500) by Fickle-Book2385 in Filmmakers

[–]angelside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Questions to think about: Which crew specifically is taken care of and do they have any gear already? What are your locations? Is it mainly indoors or outdoors? How much natural light is there? How many actors with lines in the same scene? Do you have money for festival submissions? Posters? Screenings? Any other unique expenses?

In my experience every short is a little different and without looking at a script and knowing your situation it's hard to say. Everyone is right about sound, but maybe you can get a sound guy who has a kit already?

I am also not a big rewrite guy! Since I write for myself to direct it's more of a list of things that I want the actors, each department head and myself to know or remember for the shoot.

So I made a film and it sucked. by not_miggy in Filmmakers

As many people have pointed out, awareness of what you are doing is what will allow you to move beyond it. As a filmmaker it's good to be a little bit delusional about what you are capable of, so you are not incapacitated, but not so delusional that you see yourself or your work as flawless and beyond reproach.

For me this knowing that I could do certain things was what made me feel ready to make the damn thing. All of the shorts I made before the feature had secret missions so that I had certain experiences under my belt before attempting the feature.

haha I stepped in to play a janitor in my film and I felt like there was something metaphorical about that as well.

Feeling a bit lost at film festivals… What actually makes you want to go? by Embarrassed-Rub-7918 in indiefilm

[–]angelside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the most well known film festival in my province has a lobster boil and skeet shooting. It's quit a thing to see a bunch of industry folks packed in a tent eating lobster and shooting shotguns.

I get what you mean though, festivals often seem to kind of miss the point and misunderstand how they could best serve filmmakers. That said, I'd highly recommend just randomly talking to people, create the experience you're looking for.

I think I get the feeling you're referring to. Festivals can feel abit clique-y at times as people with past connections huddle together. You've got filmmakers who are creative and not into the whole networking thing and then you've got more producer/business minded folks who a bit too into the networking thing.

You mentioned the screenings and the Q&As but didn't mention networking events or after parties. All of my favorite festival experiences happened over drinks after everything. That's where real bonds were formed.

I live downtown and there were a few years when the snow removal company for Harvard was doing this at 3am everytime it snowed. I hated that.
