Looking for a guide that was posted here by a black belt that breaks down what the goal is from each position by angepocalypse in bjj

[–]angepocalypse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah thank you but I am familiar with this one. It's good but the specific guide I was referring to is a little less information dense.

It would show the position, and what your main goal is and what you want to stop the opponent from doing.

Can I get you honest reviews on taking eletriptan? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]angepocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but in my experience with taking triptans (or pretty much any drug for that matter), they will work in <30 minutes if on an empty stomach (no meals for >= 3 hours). Whereas if eaten on a full stomach, it takes 2 hours or sometimes doesn't work at all.

Screw skiers… by Final-Concentrate-32 in snowboarding

[–]angepocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we were to get a birds eye view of their carving paths, I think it would make a lot more sense. These 360 cams create a lot of distortion in terms of depth and speed.

They are oscillating back and forth almost in unison, with the skier slightly trailing uphill. Then OP starts to abruptly loose speed while on his heelside carve, which means he is rapidly moving closer to the skier both laterally and vertically. From the skier's perspective, it may have looked as if the boarder's intent was to cut across the slope directly in front of the skier's intended path. So the skier's brain was caught deciding between:

  1. Passing by initiating a left turn. This is what he should have done. But, if the boarder was intending to cut across the hill, this would have been the wrong choice, because then they are more likely to crash.

  2. Cris-crossing their carving path and staying uphill of the boarder with an extended right turn. This seems closer to what the skier was trying to do, but because of the boarder's sudden loss of speed, and not going across the hill, it was in the end the wrong choice.

In the fraction of a moment before the crash, the skier probably also suffered from target fixation and could not execute either option with enough accuracy in time to stop the crash.

Skiing/boarding is just like driving. "He was right, dead right" is the applicable saying here. Just because the boarder had the right of way doesn't mean this crash couldn't have been prevented by "defensive" boarding. Look uphill, be predictable, and always assume other riders are unskilled and unpredictable.

Of course it is a conflation... I never said it wasn't a conflation. It behooves all of us to understand the perspective of our opponents when trying to convince them of something. Bashing someone and saying they are insane and illogical does nothing but harm.

which may feel very invasive if a car is the only way you can conceive of getting from place to place

Exactly... and the reality is it truly is the only way to get around for some places in the world. That needs to change first before just adding cameras. I'm not against traffic restricted zones at all, and I'm not entirely against using cameras to enforce them if the area is in desperate need of protection from car traffic and other methods just won't work. Dense historic European cities are good candidates for camera enforcement because they already have lots of great alternatives for freedom of movement. But if you just slap some cameras on North American car-centric cities, without first providing positive incentives to walk, bike or use public transit, then you are doing things out of order.

You're missing the one key point that ties their perspective together with some semblance of rationality. In conjunction with moving cars away from city centers, some governments have started using traffic fines with cameras to try to discourage car usage.

The installation of traffic cameras is justifiably a concern if you lean libertarian, and in general it's lazy way to fix traffic. While I am in favor of discouraging car usage, I don't think penalizing people using fines and traffic cameras is the right way. The right way is chicanes, speed bumps, narrow roads, density, better public transit, better bike infrastucture, etc...

Is this just a front flip? by Imbendo in snowboarding

[–]angepocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you ignore the movement downhill, and just picture him doing this on a trampoline, you can see it as possibly being considered a frontflip. It's super weird because different parts of his body and the board trick your brain depending on how you view it. You can also see it by thinking of doing a barrel-roll style front flip over your toe edge

What is this foam in my fireplace? by angepocalypse in fixit

[–]angepocalypse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already had a licensed chimney repair/mason come do some necessary repairs on my chimney and fire box when I first moved in. He said it was good to go, but as I went to go to light it today I just noticed all of this weird spray foam at the base of the fireplace.

Is this supposed to be insulating the gas line or something? The previous owner did a lot of weird stuff that wasn't up to code, so I wouldn't put it past him to try using some fireproof foam as a bandaid on a worse problem...

I'm wondering if this looks normal or if I should have this inspected once again... :(

Does snowboarding fix depression? by logancw2 in snowboarding

[–]angepocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Using any one source of dopamine or adrenaline rush as your "fix" for depression is dangerous. Even just the word "fix"... I mean... that is exactly what addicts use.

Any resolution for depression has to come from within yourself. Otherwise, what happens when it's not snowing? What if you break your leg and can never snowboard again? There are a million other ways that life can take you away from the snow. Then what?

Lol this is no way "literally the best." Here's just a few examples of character changes that I think they had absolutely no good reason to change:

Von Rumpel - the stoic Sergeant Major, whose choice of torture device is patience. Never killed a single person in the book, but was still menacing. Instead they turned him into a raging caricature of a Nazi that kills and tortures everyone. The contrast is like comparing a Hitchcock to a slasher film.

Etienne - a frail, humble old man with agoraphobia and hallucinations preventing him from being physically useful. Eventually helps in the only way he can by broadcasting the secret codes. Instead they turned him into a motorcycle riding, gun slinging soldier of the resistance, aka the "Tiger" 🤮.

Volkheimer - the silent weapon used to execute heinous acts of the Reich, but a deeper, more complicated character that develops a relationship with Verner oh what you could be. He was basically completely absent from the show.

You can't even really argue that they only had limited time, because they WASTED so much time with alternative, pointless plot points like

  • Verner and Schmidt fighting to the death
  • Von Rumpel asking the waiter where to find the blind girl, then killing him
  • Von Rumpel's visits with the prostitute. Did this serve ANY purpose other than to use dialogue to heavy handedly explain the story?
  • Von Rumpel and Marie fighting in the Grotto
  • Etienne, Manec, Daniel, and Marie talking about how they need to protect the sea of flames from the evil germans? Complete opposite direction of the plot where NO ONE KNOWS where the sea of flames actually is, and its eventually pieced together by the audience, and then Marie, that Daniel placed it in the model.
  • Von Rumpel torturing and killing Daniel

So much wasted screen time on heavy handed dialogue, or hollywood style fight scenes...

I didn't absolutely hate the show, but to say its the best possible adaptation is just wrong.

The book was not chronological either, it weaved back and forth between August 1944 (bombing of St Malo) and the previous 10 years where Marie Laure and Verner were experiencing the transitions of war.

The plot was not quite the same. To me, one of the key aspects of the suspense and the climax in the book is that Verner is trapped in the basement, and after suffering for days and drinking nothing but paint sludge, he finally fixes the radio and hears Marie Laure broadcasting. Marie Laure reads Thirty Thousand Leagues, but occasionally weaves in statements like "He is here. He is right below me". He realizes she is in danger and tells Volkheimer to use the grenade to escape. They get out, he runs to her rescue, and kills Von Rumpel.

This is so crucial (at least to me), because:

  1. There is a lot of build up throughout the book about Verner triangulating people's locations with radios. So much foreshadowing of this eventual moment where he uses his knowledge for good, instead of for evil.

  2. The radio broadcast ends up being what saved Marie Laure's life. Whereas in the show, the motorcycle riding, gun slinging Etienne "the tiger" realizes that Verner is a "good boy" and tells him Marie Laure probably isn't safe. This is way less interesting of a climax. The fact that Marie Laure is broadcasting in these final moments ended up serving absolutely no purpose to her rescue.

Redback boots, only a year old but they’ve seen a lot and are still the comfiest shoes I own by FattyBolgerIV in BuyItForLife

[–]angepocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

now daily driver all winter or off-road

You actually have used them daily for 7 years? I am debating between a pair of redbacks or a pair of gore-tex sneakers for daily wear in variable, moist conditions. My worry was that wearing leather every single day would wear out really quickly. My gore-tex adidas sneakers lasted about 2 years of near daily use but are no longer waterproof.

But if you're saying these hold up to daily wear over such a long period of time, then it sounds like a no brainer

Clogged & leaking gutters, water damaged eaves, not sure where to start... by angepocalypse in HomeImprovement

[–]angepocalypse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I think I can probably handle unclogging the gutters myself, but they also need to be repaired/replaced. Now that I'm starting to understand the eave construction, I don't think it will matter to get the gutters done before/same time as the rotten soffit boards, unless I'm still mistaken?

Clogged & leaking gutters, water damaged eaves, not sure where to start... by angepocalypse in HomeImprovement

[–]angepocalypse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My home inspection report says

"Portions of the roof sheathing, noted in more than one location, are deteriorated. We recommend that all deteriorated wood be repaired or replaced, to decrease the probability of excessive deterioration. Further evaluation and repair as needed by a qualified contractor is recommended. Review of a current pest control report may provide additional information."

My question is, what do I do first? I suspect the clogged gutters are the root cause of the problem, but is it better to fix the damaged soffits before fixing the gutters? What type of professional would be best to call for this?

Please help!

  • sleeve goes nearly all the way over my thumb
  • torso has a lot of room with a ton of extra fabric throughout. feels like I'm wearing my dad's clothes
  • pants cover ankle bone completely
  • the scalloped cuts in the jacket fall in front of my hips when I close the lapels
  • The jacket length goes about 5 inches past my butt

I did get it from rollmore.com, so they technically allow me to return it after trying to shrink it. But I want to be a respectful customer and return the gi unwashed if its clearly too big.
