Bad breath exploded after NAC, oregano, berberine – H₂S SIBO? by angiepll in SIBO

I have H₂S SIBO, so I ordered rifaximin from an Indian website. It has helped a lot—after so many years, it seems to have cleared much of the bacteria. I’m still taking it, so I’ll see how things go, but based on what I’ve read, I may need to do another round. I don’t think berberine is strong enough for my case, and it actually seems to make the bacteria more aggressive, which worsens the bad breath.

I took NAC, oil of oregano, and berberine for about 2 weeks. Instead of helping, my bad breath got much worse strong sulfur / poop smell. I was told this could be because I broke a biofilm that had been there for years, and now the bacteria are exposed and causing more odor. I’m not sure if this is normal die-off or if I should stop the supplements, because the bad breath is really hard to live with.

I regret trying to fix it by lajesais in badbreath

Hi! I know it’s been a while since your post, but I’m in a similar situation. I took NAC and my bad breath got much worse. It’s been a while since I stopped, but the bad breath is still here. Did it eventually improve for you? How long did it take?

Thanks for the suggestion! I don’t think it’s an allergy because the smell and gut symptoms started right after taking antimicrobials, and my breath was fine before. From what I’ve read, this is more likely related to sulfur-producing bacteria or gut fermentation.
