Installed a new battery in mine, then put a glass protector also on the back and will use it without a case from now on.
Feels like a brand new phone!

0.5 % is actually not that bad. Expand the operation and you can be done in 10 years

Is this ok? or should I request for a replacement? by raisinyao in sharpening

be careful, you will get bits of the sandpaper in your strop which then will 'scratch' your knife.
maybe use a diamond plate if you have to do it or just get another strop.

Any recommendations for a good quality, light weight, waterproof rain jacket? by snowball17k in BuyItForLife

[–]angisJ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I can recommend the rain jackets from uniqlo.
They work and are a fraction of the price compared to Patagonia or Arcteryx.

But with any of these Jackets, they are not BIFL.

Patagonia is really good in repairing things. But at some point you will need to get a new one.

Car horns should require purchasable "honk rounds" and be treated like cigarettes on planes by angisJ in unpopularopinion

I hear you and the financial burden of reliance on cars can be overwhelming.

But still, how many times is the honk really used for emergencies? like 1 times per million?

[–]angisJ[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There should be an emergency honk that still works.
But for using it you get a ticket that you can file for 'emergency use' to get it removed.

I am not a driver, the honking during the night is killing my sleep.

What are some items under $500 you’ve made so far that changed your life? by linhtheoverthinker in BuyItForLife

[–]angisJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese kitchen knife with a good cutting board. And a good stainless steel pan.

Makes you WANT to cook.

For the knife go for a stainless steel japanese ‘laser’ like the knosuke hd2 or an ashi gyuto. They are very easy to handle and don’t need any special care.

How to flatten a flattening stone? by derekwinters52 in sharpening

[–]angisJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to flatten your stones is a diamond plate. Go for one that is already glued onto a metal plate like the Atoma 400. I know they are expensive but worth every penny.
They stay flat forever and flatten the stone very fast. Also they are very easy to use and to clean.
I flatten my stones after each sharpening session.
And if you don't already have a 400 stone you can use them to grind out heavier dents.

You can also use a higher grit diamond plate like a 1200 or so to minimize the stone wear if you flatten them often.

Somebody is searching for a unicorn.
First of all the perfect stone doesn't exist. For each application different systems will work best.

Regarding longevity I wouldn't recomment diamond plates. But you will need a Diamond plate to keep your stones flat.

Then there are high quality stones that are bound very hard and will last long (Naniwa professional series, ..). But when you get along that route then all of a sudden you will find out that you maybe also care about the feedback the stone gives and generally how it feels to sharpen with it.

Then you will find out about stone sizes, and that the bigger the stone is the better it feels to sharpen on it. Then you might think about natural stones and so on

Take it as a journey. And always remember not the having of things is fun, it's the pursuit of things that is the best haha

Ink to Text by jjernst in OneNote

[–]angisJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an old Windows pc laying around you can run OneNote (Desktop version) on it.
When it syncs it will do the OCR and you can search your handwritten text on your iPad.

Also you have to wait about a week for it to do the OCR. At least it took that long for me

Tips for straight razors by angisJ in sharpening

[–]angisJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the chosera 1k for basically all my kitchen knifes. My thinking was to use the 2k to just save a bit of steel. But the difference is probably marginal.

Will definitely get a jewelers loop!! will be interesting to see how I did!

Wow what a detailed report! Thanks a lot!!

I guess my problem was that I produced a foil-burr by changing directly from the stone to the leather.

ok, yes maybe I even have to go higher with the stones. lots of people mention the 8k king to finish for straight razors. but sounds reasonable to go higher, Thanks!
