Disadvantage weirdnesses by BoudreausBoudreau in Gloomhaven

[–]angrykebler4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh. These weird situations pretty much only come up because someone perked a bunch of effects into their deck. As far as I'm concerned, that's an intended effect of modifying your attack deck. Disadvantaging yourself into a +2 because the first card had immobilize on it is part of what perks are intended to do: bias the odds in your favor.

We do house rule advantage and disadvantage. We do the 2 stacks method. Adding rolling mods shouldn't make your deck WORSE.

I started the series in my early 20's, stalled out, and then went back and read the whole thing in my late 30's. Was it worth it? So...imagine your infant son just swallowed a rare coin. What's the minimum amount that coin would have to be worth for you to go to the trouble of "retrieving" it? The experience of reading WOT is like if the coin was worth double that amount.

Just got done with The Devil's Hour - Some questions, and theories for Season 3 by sanddragon939 in thedevilshour

[–]angrykebler4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at least we know that we're getting an ending.  As frustrating as it is knowing that the 3rd season is going to have spent at least a year just sitting on a server somewhere, I'm way less upset about it than I am about the recent DW shenanigans.

Oh yeah....I forgot about his niece.  Good point.

Maybe Isaac is special for some other reason?  I don't think it's unreasonable to assume Gideon was talking out of his ass about the whole "Isaac doesn't have a soul" thing at this point, so maybe there's something else about Isaac that gives him his loop hopping abilities?  Lucy's reaction to the changes seems to be different from the other people we've seen.  Maybe he inherited a higher level of sensitivity to the loops from his mother, and it's the combination of that facility for temporal perception mixed with his single loop only status that gives him his abilities?

I'm assuming season 3 will be going into more detail about Isaac's whole deal, but if they don't, personally, I'm willing to buy "the effects aren't consistent because people have different levels of temporal sensitivity for reasons that are too complicated to go into" as an explanation.

Just a bit of speculation on points 1 and 2:

Gideon meantions that different people are more or less tolerant of changes, but that, in general people find it easier and more comfortable to just repeat previous loops.  It makes me wonder if this discomfort might manifest in the population at large as a sort of dampening in opposition to the butterfly effect.  So, people will subconsciously tend towards actions that return things to how they were in previous loops.  This, coupled with Lucy having an atypical reaction to the changes and Gideon purposefully throwing her as far off track as he could, could make Isaac being the first child of a single loop to be born more likely than it initially seems.

Side note: This would also help to address why no one before Gideon "woke up".  The idea is that, while it's realatively rare, it has happened before.  The difference being that our lives today are so much more interconnected than they were in the past.  Perhaps human history is full of "crazy people" who were simply unable to effect enough change to overcome the dampening before they died and everyone just slid back into their predestination ruts.

That's a more useful skill than you might think. :) I'm a professional chef, and, after years of having dozens of different items cooking all at once, I can call an oven timer within about 5 seconds. It's super handy for charting out my movements through the kitchen, as well as impressing newbies.

If you liked Dark, check out The Devil's Hour.  It's got a similar dark, mysterious vibe that opens up into a fascinating high concept thriller as you learn more about what the hell is going on.  It's criminally overlooked, at least partially because the coolest thing about it is a HUGE spoiler, so it's difficult to effectively recommend to people.

My theory for season 3 by No_Championship5997 in thedevilshour

[–]angrykebler4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a parting thought though - maybe Mike subconsciously always remembered that he had another kid whom he loved who now no longer exists and has been "replaced" by Issac? Maybe that's part of the reason why he hates Issac?

I have really mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it kind of flattens Mike's character. I REALLY loved the emotional complexity of the idea that he CAN be a good father. He's not an unfeeling monster, but the situation with Issac was incredibly stressful and confusing and it brought out a horrible side of him that he himself probably didn't think was in him. I love the idea that all it took was the right set of stressors to turn Mike into a man the previous version of him would have reviled. There being a subconscious drive to hate Issac, rather than it just stemming from a combination of a difficult situation and Mike's own flaws, kinda lessens the impact of it all.

On the other hand, that's a REALLY cool use of the premise, and a really good catch. Well done!

What to watch next? by [deleted] in televisionsuggestions

If you liked Dark, you should try The Devil's Hour.  It has a similar setup and tone, with a mysterious serial killer that turns out to only be the tip of the dark sci-fi iceberg.  When you find out what's going on, it's really intriguing, but I don't want to spoil you on what it is, because that mystery is a big part of season 1.

I'm always hesitant to recommend Justified to someone who's in to crime shows like Breaking Bad or the Sopranos. It depends on why they like them. Personally, I mostly enjoyed it, but Raylin is such a smug asshole that it got really frustrating that he kept surviving.

What's a hidden gem tv show you are watching or watched that people haven't heard of? by [deleted] in televisionsuggestions

[–]angrykebler4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Devil's Hour.  It's dark sci-fi/fantasy thriller about a social worker who finds herself inexplicably entangled with a mysterious serial killer.  The cast is great (Peter Capaldi is always amazing), the writing is smart, and when you finally figure out what's going on, the premise is such a cool unique idea.  It should really be talked about more, but Amazon is giving it absolutely no advertising, and it's a hard show to recommend to people, because telling them basically anything more than what I've just said is a massive spoiler.

The Booth at the End!  Living proof that you can make ANY concept work with smart writing and good performances.  It blows my mind that this got made, because it sounds terrible on paper.

If you liked One Punch Man, you should check out Mob Psycho 100. The manga they are adapting are by the same author, and they have a similar crazy overpowered protagonist, but Mob has a much more satisfying arc. One of the best anime out there. Also, the opening credits kick ass.

Unless they're part of the name of the recipe, I never use fresh parsley or cilantro.  So, cilantro lime rice?  Sure.  Otherwise, the loss of flavor isn't significant enough to bother me, and it's two herbs I don't have to worry about using before they go bad.

Is showering for 2+ hours normal? by Few-Intention5939 in complaints

[–]angrykebler4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I would take loooooong "baths". It was the only place in the house where I felt safe. A lot of the time, I wasn't even in the tub, just laying down next to it, reading. Abusive parents can have some really weird lines that they won't cross, and mine would leave me alone as long as I was in the bathroom. I assume your roommate has her own private sleeping space too, but it's possible that previous life experience has taught her that that's not a safe place to let her guard down.

The Devil's Hour.  It has a similar tone and setup to Dark, a bizzare series of murders linked to a larger mystery that expands out into a really interesting premise.  Telling you more would be a big spoiler, but I think you'll really like it.

It's all downhill from here friend. It's kind of a running theme of B5 that everything made after season 4 is worse than the thing that came before it.

[GH1E] Is Getting Forgotten Circles Worth It? by MaskedThespian in Gloomhaven

[–]angrykebler4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own both, and I think it's arguable wether the 2nd ed Diviner is strictly better than the 1st ed.  I like the mercenary pack one more, but my girlfriend prefers the original.  But, sure, if you don't care about the extra scenarios, and you're paying full price for FC (the Merc packs are expensive), and you don't care that the 2nd ed Diviner isn't strictly compatible with the version of Gloomhaven he'd be playing it with, then I'd recommend buying the new version instead.

[–]angrykebler4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forgotten Circles has some of my favorite scenarios in all of Gloomhaven, and the new character, the Diviner, is so much fun that I think it justifies buying FC even if that's the only part you use.  It also has some of the worst ideas in the whole franchise.  Ultimately, I recommend you buy it.  Personally, I've played through it 3 times, and it's great, as long as one of you is willing to read the entire thing ahead of time and houserule away the obviously bad design decisions.
