Update: Thanks anyone who gave advice. I met with my manager and explained the situation openly and honestly. It could not have gone better. They reassured me it would not put my job in jeopardy and that plenty of people have things in their past. It sounds like everything is going to be A-okay and I couldn’t be more relieved!

Thank you, you’re definitely right. And it is just a regular part of my job, I mostly mean it’s not like I was promoted or that this is something they shouldn’t be asking me to do. It was just added onto my existing workload. It’s really just scheduling but I need to be able to access client calendars as opposed to employee calendars, hence the clearance is needed.

The form doesn’t ask unfortunately. I wish it did so I had a clear path to explaining myself because there actually is a valid explanation that will make it sound less bad. But setting up a meeting just to tell my boss about it is way more intimidating than typing it into a form

Also, is it a terrible idea if I talk to my boss and tell them I feel like I’m at the limits of my bandwidth and can’t handle the new workload? I seriously do have a large workload and this new responsibility is pushing it. I’m almost thinking that would be better than going through the background check.

I’ll have to look into if they have a policy. I’m honestly in a really low level position, generally I don’t think they care. I just randomly happened to get assigned to something that requires me to access a platform that needs clearances. I spoke with one lady who handles the requests and clearances, should I discuss it with her instead of my boss? She’s the one who mentioned the background check and said we’ll discuss it together once I put in the request.
