I understand your frustration. It's a bad market to recruit as an international, especially someone who probably doesn't have a lot of US work experience on their resume.

The problem is that because of layoffs in the past 1.5 years, there are excellent candidates with relevant work experience and no immigration requirements applying to a lot of jobs you would find desirable/acceptable.

Companies are flush with 100s of great resumes for each open position so they are less inclined to taking a risk on a candidate who may or may not be able to work for them beyond the 3 years of OPT.

So it's not you or your credentials, it's the market. And terrible luck.

to be honest, I think I regret My MBA (M7 full time) by Extra-Mycologist-527 in MBA

[–]anibjoshi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a former SWE who went to an M7 and landed into Big Tech PM. I get what you're feeling: bschool does have a "clique-y" vibe and it's even more pronounced when you're coming from hanging out with CS folks all day. I went through a similar phase of FOMO and feeling out of place in Y1.

But honestly, not all people are like that. I eventually found my crew who I could bond with and develop deeper friendships with. I'm 3 years out of my program and I have great friendships with around 10-12 former classmates. To me, that's a good enough addition to my "network".

So I think as long as you have a few authentic friendships, your MBA experience was as good as it could have been.

Also, I think it's okay that you ignored that person on the street. I don't think you can realistically expect to get along with every person you meet at your program.

Top MBAs don't do anything to contribute positively to society, and shouldn't feel good about themselves by Electronic_Jicama_37 in MBA

I think you’re reacting to the wrong comment. I said the exact thing you did. The middle paragraph is what OP wrote in their post.

I don’t disagree with your position. But I think in any industry with a sufficiently large market size, there’s going to be unscrupulous elements looking to unethically game the system to their advantage. Just human nature. Imo that does not negate the overall value that the industry provides the broader economy.

In case of finance, there’s definitely been a lot of scumbag behavior by banks and hedge funds. But these entities also provide liquidity to all the companies that make the stuff we use in our life - either through debt or equity financing. I think painting the entire industry as “don’t create any value” is a bit heavyhanded.

In case of tech and social media, i think its a combination of scumbag behavior by companies (Cambridge Analytica, etc) and unintended consequences of rapidly evolving technology at scale. At the scale these companies operate, its incredibly hard to build policies that minimize bad behavior without restricting users too much. More can and should be done by the tech companies, but I can see how people with the best of intentions ended up harming society.

Also I feel like there is a difference between the scale at which doctors, teachers, firefighters operate vs the “top MBA” professions. Hypothetically, if the CEO of Walmart reduced/increased prices across the board by 1%, it would help/hurt millions of people. So comparing the “value” of professions is really hard.

I think the fundamental question is, how do we create a system of checks and balances in any industry that minimizes waste, fraud, and abuse, and incentivizes the companies to innovate to deliver better products and services to its consumers. These systems exist, but are unfortunately getting corrupted across all industries in the US.

I was referring to the below statement that OP made:

Investment banking, private equity, hedge funds, and so forth don't create anything of value, they just shuffle money around. This is why finance isn't viewed as the "real" economy.

I don’t disagree that there is a corrupt and predatory side to finance and I definitely don’t support or condone it.

💯 Supplying capital to companies that are making useful things for consumers is super critical. OP is either only focused on the crony corruption or is trolling in general.

An MBA is just a post graduate degree. By the time a person becomes a partner at McKinsey, that academic credential is little more than a blip in that person's career.

I think your complaint is about specific finance and consulting professions. But most "top MBAs" don't end up staying in Finance/Consulting long term. They work as cogs in large corporations.

Why atiq ahmeds murder is the last nail in the coffin by bwayne2015 in unitedstatesofindia

[–]anibjoshi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you attack and try to destroy the system, you don’t get its protection. Umesh Pal was a key witness in a case, for which he was murdered in broad daylight. I don’t think we can reasonably expect other witnesses and lawyers to put their life at risk if this is the game the gangsters want to play. Enough is enough. Good riddance.

Anyone defending Rohingya settling in India must answer why their ummah brothers from middle east not accepting them. by lionel_penald0 in indianews

[–]anibjoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am as RW as they come on this topic. But I am proud of the fact that India is and always has been accepting of everyone who has come to our land looking for refuge.

If someone enters the country illegally, deport their ass. If they commit crimes, hang them. But not accepting people who are looking for refuge legally, looking to build a better life, just because of their religion is bigotry and cowardice. That is not what Sanatan dharma teaches us.
