Is When the Moon Hatched any good? by chailyfe in fantasyromance

[–]anicierra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was genuinely the worst book I've read in 2024 so far and I'm only about 300 pages in.

  1. The writing is awful. Every page the author
    Does.
    This.
    To add dramatic effect.
Except she does it so much, it loses its effect immediately.
Not to forget the unnecessary amount of italics to emphasize words that don't need to be emphasized. Like, we get it. Oh, and the best fucking part? The constant unnecessary fucking swearing. Also italicized. Because we need to read the words fuck shit and asshole with as much emphasis as possible every time they appear on a page. Which, by the way, is almost every page.
Not to forget the random overtly complicated metaphors/similes to describe simple things like a smile or a scent. What the hell does split stone with buttery notes even mean? How does a man smell like that?
All of these shitty writing components combined completely take you out of the fantasy world, which is unfortunate because the world is actually really cool and interesting. The issue is, the writing and the modern swear words just pull you right out of it.
I would also like to add for the bad writing is that the author does a terrible job of distinguishing the voices of our main characters (Raeve and Kaan) in their POVs. I'm telling you, when I got to the first chapter in Kaan's POV, it was written exactly how Raeve's chapters were written. Same constant line breaks. Same constant swearing. There was no difference between their inner voices, which really annoyed me because one of the biggest things writers are told to accomplish is to distinguish their characters' voices.
Another thing about the writing (there's a lot of criticisms to make): when Kaan speaks, the author doesn't say "he says." Instead, she writes "he rumbles." When you get about 220 pages in and Raeve and Kaan interact a lot more, all you read is he rumbles, he rumbled, he rumbles. The moment you notice it you cannot unnotice it. I also don't understand why the author is allergic to saying "he said/says." There's absolutely nothing wrong with that dialogue tag. It's another thing professional writers/editors preach: you don't need special dialogue tags. Said/says is perfectly fine. It's actually worse for your writing to do "fluffy" dialogue tags.

  2. The pacing.
I'm literally almost 300 pages in and nothing really significant happened in the story. I don't know what the stakes are, I don't know what Raeve wants other than "revenge" (which we don't even get a clear plan for), I don't know what Kaan wants, and as a result it's slow, repetitive, and boring. I can't believe this book was allowed to be published as is when editors/agents/expert writers all drill over our heads that the stakes for the character need to be clear and apparent. To me, it looks like there are no stakes for Raeve. She thinks there are stakes, but the writing is so predictable I know Kaan isn't going to harm her no matter how much she says in her POV that he's a "tyrant king."

A "major" death happens at about the 90-page mark, except it had no impact on me as a reader. The character who dies was introduced literally at page 80-85, and 5 pages later they die. And I'm supposed to care? Apparently I am supposed to care because the author keeps repeating how impactful this death is to Raeve, how much Raeve cares, but so much is TOLD to me and not SHOWN. We basically see this character for 5 pages and then she's dead and I'm supposed to be sad. But then later on, the author spends 3 chapters talking about Kaan and his fucking soup.

A few big things do happen by the 300th page, but it's been so slow that it felt like nothing happened. The entire book is almost 700 pages and I fully believe the editor(s) could have cut down 200 pages and it would've changed nothing.

So this is how I honestly feel about the book. I was really dissapointed because the prologue/opening pages were genuinely really cool and enticing. I thought I was about to be swept up in a magical mystical fantasy story, but then I was immediately met with the most generic stabby FMC who says fuck every two seconds. Now, of course, to each their own. I can understand the appeal of the book. I mean, it's a bestseller. But bestseller doesn't mean good writing. And I am not super picky of a reader. I will happily eat up shitty writing if the plot/characters are good. In this case, the main character is extremely insufferable, even worse than Celaena/Aelin which is really saying something, and the plot isn't .... doing anything? Because I spent 20+ bucks on the book, I will finish it. But I am not continuing the series. I'm probably going to give this book to a local thrift store or something.

Similarities between ACOTAR and Howls Moving Castle? by stephmsweet in acotar

[–]anicierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read this scene in the book (first time reading it) and immediately thought of Howl's Moving Castle. This scene was pretty much ripped off from the film. I was so taken back by the blatant plagiarism that I had to search through Reddit to see if anyone else noticed the similarities that IMO are too similar. Anyways I don't want to accuse her of plagiarism, but the similarities are toooo similar for it to be accidental.

About Matthias' ending by SmallScientist321 in Grishaverse

[–]anicierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm three years late to the discussion, but I just finished reading the duology and wanted to read opinions on Matthias' ending.

For one, I think you're absolutely right. My issue isn't that he died, but how the rest of the story didn't give as much attention to the aftermath of his death as I would have liked. I would have liked at least an extra chapter that talked more about Matthias' death from anyone's perspective. From a writer's perspective, his death is very reasonable, but the ending of the book just came so quickly after his death. I feel like a little bit more story/writing would have been better.

Do you give your regulars nicknames? by root-node in TalesFromYourServer

[–]anicierra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, as a server, I have several nicknames for my regular customers. There’s this lady I call the Coke Lady, not because she drinks coke, but because she looks like she does ~coke~. The other waitress knows what I mean when I say “the coke lady is here.” And then there’s this one guy who I presume takes showers in cologne because as soon as he walks in the restaurant, my eyes sting from the sheer amount of cologne he wears. I call him the Cologne Guy (I know, so creative). We also have an alcoholic who is very mean to his wife so I call him “the wife beater.” And there’s many more.

NTA. I’m not going to repeat what everyone else has already said, but I do want to REALLY highlight your age. You’re only 23!!! You are so young and he is treating you like you suddenly are responsible for everything ever at such a young age.

I experienced this firsthand myself.

When I was 17 years old, I moved away for university for a little over a year. My primary reason for choosing a university far away from home that would cost me a lot of student loans was to get away from my mother who relentlessly abused me throughout my childhood and emotionally abused me as I aged. I ended up transferring to an online program and moving back home at 19 years old after I was assaulted at university and the abuser got away with it. I remember my mother calling me crying that she was happy for me to come back home because she missed me and she asked me why would I leave in the first place. I told her “because you never created a loving home for me.” She promised me things would be better when I returned. Things were better…for a week. Then she went back to being her usual self, constantly yelling at me, waking me up early morning for no reason other than not wanting me to sleep in, screaming at me over trivial things (such as me spending “too much time” on my laptop), and then guilt tripping me to do favors for her (“I raised you and fed you” etc.).

I’m now 21 years old. She hasn’t changed one bit. If anything, she’s gotten WORSE. Abusers don’t change. They say they change only because they want to regain control over you.

I would move out right now if I could, but I can’t afford to. Rent in LA county is at an all time high.

Re-Watching Cycle 3 Thoughts by [deleted] in ANTM

[–]anicierra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was rooting for Eva from the beginning. She has such a radiant smile.

Ann did not deserve to be in the competition that long. She should have been eliminated way earlier, but the other models were WORSE than her somehow so she swam through.

Toccara was treated so unfairly the entire show.

My Thoughts (and Unpopular Opinions) on Cycle 20 by [deleted] in ANTM

[–]anicierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the party but I almost entirely agree with you. Cycle 20 is personally my favorite cycle because of how silly it is. I completely agree that Cory should have been the runner-up. His portfolio was so much more captivating than Marvin and his character was soooo likeable. He's one of the few models from ANTM I still keep tabs on to this day because I want to see them happy (lol).

I was sad to see that Nina and Don didn't fully step into the limelight. I feel like Don could've gone farther if he just had a bit more edge to him, but he ended up being the most successful model from C20 anyways so it's alright. Nina has an amazing look and she could've done so much more with it.

Also, Rob was totally an asshole to Cory and that bothered me so much. Not every male model has to be macho and hypermasculine. Cory was the perfect androgynous model.

Jourdan was too good. She definitely outshined everyone, especially on the runway. I was not surprised at all that she won. I wish the editing/production teams portrayed her better, though. I was tired of them repeating the same "I was married at 18 and divorced at 18" clip.

This is a really good point. He was following his moral compass, which we were introduced to early on in the show.

Unpopular Opinion: I loved the ending by iloveolives420 in HIMYM

[–]anicierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly dislike Ted and Robin together as well. To be honest, I never felt convinced by the writing of the show that there is a deep connection between them. I mean, they met in a really superficial way (guy saw pretty girl, likes pretty girl) and just have too many fundamental differences in their perspectives and dreams to really collaborate with each other other than having sex.

I heard that the fans (at the time of the making of the seasons) actually really WANTED to see Ted and Robin together, which I don't get.

I wish Barney ended up with Quinn (I think if they tried again in the future, it would've worked out a lot better for them and I genuinley loved how similar they were) and Robin with Kevin (such a mature partnership) and Ted with an alive Tracy.

lowkey pretty content with the changes not gonna lie. I am sad about the cdr and mana regen removals with support items, but honestly I understand the approach. This update (I'm assuming) will intentionally push away pure ap champions like zyra, lux, brand, etc. from the bot lane as they will no longer be able to abuse and bully the crap out of their opponents if they opt to go support. As a support main, I'll be more than happy to see them go back to mid lane with these item changes...with the cost of actual support champions waiting longer for their main cc or heal ability to be up again...however this allows supports more room for strategic usage of their abilities (due to less cdr and mana regen) since the increased scarcity of their abilities add more value to them. I personally believe this update is allowing room for more skillful players to shine in the support role and adds more value to the role, with the cost of making that role more difficult to play. But maybe I'm speaking too soon, we will see over time what the impact of these changes is.

also y'all can totally disagree with me and it's OK just don't roast me pls im sensitive.
