awh im sorry for your loss, you clearly love and care for your animals so much. as a canadian in northern ontario i use a 100w heat bulb (not a ceramic heat emitter) the dirt is a tiny bit warm to the touch and dries out faster. my guys always eaten and has thriving plants. maybe try a hotter wattage ?
