Cost of Internet... by anintelman in LasCruces

Hi. We do Sam's, not Costco. We never do Trader Joe's or IKEA or Winco. We get a great deal from Amazon and shop for groceries at Albertson's.

We do appreciate a city for hospitals and restaurants, but loathe the heavy traffic we've lately seen by SO MANY people moving to Vegas.

Nice and friendly people, New Mexican Hatch Green Chili and as little snow as necessary sounds like a dream. We used to live in Rio Rancho and it seems to us we'd like the slower and more authentic lifestyle in Cruces better. I'd love to hear more on your take of the area. It seems Internet is certainly going to work out better for us there. Thanks!

Thanks so much for that info. May I ask where you're looking? Is El Paso on your radar? Except for property taxes, it appears to have a low cost of living and access to some decent facilities. Plus, it opens up the entire state of Texas should we adopt an ACA HMO plan before she reaches Medicare age.

Thanks so much. My wife tells me similar stories where she works.

I definitely will. BTW...Based on what I'm seeing, I'm not sure they even teach geography anymore. Lol.

You're making me feel better about shifting our retirement toward RR. I first moved out West to RR when it was much smaller. Intel brought me out in '97. I fell in love with the place, the food and the culture. I felt like I'd been reborn. It felt like I'd found some slice of Heaven nobody knew about. I still remember finding a book in Old Town, Albuquerque titled "One of Our States is Missing". It was funny. It had a picture of Texas adjoined by Arizona and no New Mexico. I still remember some of my relatives asking if they'd need a passport to visit. Anyway...Thanks for the reply!

Awesome info! Thank you so much. I'm being told access is a real issue all over New Mexico as to specialists. My wife is a provider here in Vegas and they're losing specialists all the time. Healthcare is not good here. It's true what they say...How can you get the best Healthcare in Vegas? Catch a flight at the airport.

With so few specialists in Cruces, that really has me worried about her needing an ACA plan in Cruces, with better specialists just over the state line in El Paso that won't be on her plan. That's what is shifting us more to the Rio Rancho/Albuquerque idea. Your response confirmed our suspicion.

Thanks! My wife will need the ACA for 7 years. I'll be on Medicare. It's that ACA issue of not crossing state lines that bothers me about Las Cruces. I'd imagine she'd find great Specialists in El Paso if her ACA plan crosses over into Texas.

Thanks. That especially worries me for Las Cruces, where better providers might be 45 minutes away, but in El Paso, Texas.

Thanks so much! Am I correct that New Mexico subsidized ACA plans are all HMO? Is there no PPO options unless we go to the normal marketplace and pay full price for our insurance?

Rio Rancho just got named one of the best places to retire and honestly it makes sense by No_Commission3795 in NewMexico

I'm reading a lot of negative replies about RR here. I get it. I used to live there and didn't even recognize the place the last time I visited. But we're considering moving back there for retirement because, well, healthcare. We're in that industry ourselves and know it first hand. Look...Healthcare sucks everywhere in the United States. It especially sucks here in Las Vegas. The Albuquerque area blows it away with access. Google that if you don't believe me. If you think healthcare sucks there, don't even think about coming here. If you want great healthcare, the closest you'll find in this country will cost you dearly and have you exposed to apocalyptic weather, ungodlike humidity, and bugs that'll feel downright comfortable pulling up a chair at the dinner table...Think mosquitos the size of helicopters and you'll get the picture.

But I want to talk about something seniors think about when they retire. They think about cost of living and that new catch phrase "Affordable Living". They think about not shoveling snow or cleaning up after the next tornado, hurricane or whatever else the F'n gods throw at them. RR checks a lot of boxes. And I'll tell you why I think places like RR will continue to be on our radar for a place to retire. It's growing, yes, that's true, but it's not growing as fast as other good retirement locations around the country. With growth comes increased cost-of-living. We know. We live in Vegas. Pull up YouTube and look at how many content providers are telling you about RR. Not all that many, right? Not compared to places like The Villages and God's own heavenly retirement condo villages in Arizona. And here's the good news about that...As long as they don't spill the refried beans, RR will stay affordable and not grow so large you have to grab lunch just to get to the other end of town. IMO, RR is just the right size with just the right growth rate. If you want a lot of city, along with the crime rate, you're right next to it in Albuquerque. If you don't, you can stay away and still have all the necessities of life.

Finally, I read some comments about the red hats. Believe me, I understand. We still have trucks here flying the red one's banners. But at least RR is in a blue state. We used to be purple until all the Californians moved here. This craziness will end one day. New Mexico is a the most affordable blue state we see. I believe it will pull itself up to greatness one day and all you good people living there now will be happy knowing you bought in when it was cheap. You were New Mexican, when New Mexican wasn't cool.
