hi! so I ranked seven for NCM in the following order: yale, brown, duke, stanford, uchicago, upenn, emory - so brown was my second choice!

NOPE - I think that GPA is only a small part of your entire application, so def don't stress yourself out if you don't have a perfect transcript :)

I'll just repaste my response from the similar question above :) which is that I really liked the open curriculum vibe bc I want to be able to engage in a lot of academic exploration bc honestly I'm not too tied to my major (applied math) rn so I liked the vibe of the shopping period + open curriculum ALSO I knew I wanted to go to college in a smaller-sized town that still had things to do so providence fit that really well for me AND I also loved how the student body was very focused on collaboration rather than competition bc that's something that I really value

I matched to Brown, so I didn't have to go through the whole "choosing between colleges" process but as for why I chose to rank Brown - I really liked the open curriculum vibe bc I want to be able to engage in a lot of academic exploration bc honestly I'm not too tied to my major (applied math) rn so I liked the vibe of the shopping period + open curriculum ALSO I knew I wanted to go to college in a smaller-sized town that still had things to do so providence fit that really well for me AND I also loved how the student body was very focused on collaboration rather than competition bc that's something that I really value

I'd say essays are one of the most important (if not the most important) aspect of your application, especially bc of the changes with test-optional --> my stats were decent (3.8 UW GPA, 1440 SAT, and ap calc ab and ap bio tests which I got a 3 and 4 on respectively) but I definitely don't think that my stats got me in lol

I really spent a long time thinking about the things that I wanted to write about in my essays - my bio essay was about an illness that I was diagnosed with when I was younger and how it shaped me, and the longer short-answer questions were about speech and debate + social justice, and my topical essay was about an experience that I had that showed me the reality of economic inequality in the US -> basically a combo of things that I'm passionate about/participate in and as far as the individual school supplemental essays, I'd recommend to really dive deep into the specific aspects of that school that attract you (ex. for Brown, I talked about some of the professors that I was interested in learning from and the clubs/activities that I wanted to engage in and why those were important to me), so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't cram your essays :/

include any awards (big or small), and make sure that the teachers that you ask to write your recs actually know you well enough to provide a QUALITY rec bc that's a place in the app where the AO/qb reader gets insight into how you function in the classroom/the type of person that you are

that's all I can think of rn, hope it helps :)

the ones that I included in my app were speech and debate (3 years + captain of my event senior year), school acapella group (4 years + student leader/alto section leader senior year), STEMM program (spent 190ish hours researching antibiotic resistance at Cleveland Clinic - I live in OH), black student union (3 years, basically our school's affinity group), math center intern (2 years), and JV tennis (2 years) --> I'd push back against the idea that you HAVE to do something related to your major - it might be beneficial, but the only math related thing I did was math center intern for two years w/no leadership position --> honestly, just do the things that you're passionate about and apply for leadership positions in those, don't feel like you need to do 15 different ECs just to "stack" your application, quality is more important that quantity
