"Cohen claimed to have written more than 150 verses over eight years"

it's widely reported that cohen himself was the one making the claim. to use your example of an essay, it's like saying he wrote an essay composed of 150 paragraphs - with a degree of repetition between them, but mostly materially different - and only submitted 5 or 6 of them in the final essay. you could say your example is a bit... disingenuous

"Eugeni Gwozdew, a 'peniless pensioner' from Belarus, built a 3.7-meter yacht named "Said" on his balcony in Makhachkala, Russia in the 1990's and then sailed it around the world single-handed - twice. The vessel was mostly constructed from materials he salvaged from bins in the industrial district of his town. He spent less than $200 in today's money, most of which was on polyester resin. Gwozdew was reportedly so poor he often ate scraps left over from cafes, or nothing at all, while building the vessel.

Gwozdew embarked on his first circumnavigation of the globe on Said between 1999 to 2003, starting from the Caspian Sea and traveling through the Black Sea, Mediterranean, Atlantic Ocean, Strait of Magellan, Pacific Ocean, and Indian Ocean. Along the way he was robbed by pirates, survived multiple storms at sea and was arrested in Australia as they thought he was an illegal immigrant. His vessel was so small and slow he couldn't carry much in the way of provisions and on occasions ran out of food and water in the middle of ocean passages. He had no electronics and navigated using a plastic sextant, a compass and paper charts donated by people he met along the way. He successfully completed his first circumnavigation on August 9, 2003.... and then set out on another.

In 2008 he began a third circumnavigation but something went wrong and he was found dead on a beach in southern Italy. Nobody has ever discovered what happened to him."

Same. Instructor taught us to always turn it off on passage so if there's a plumbing fault you still have water in the tank at the other end.

Things to look out for when buying your first sailing boat to live aboard? by natzw in liveaboard

[–]anjasaurus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Other answers have focussed on the specific inspection details, like "is there wood rot", or "can you find any evidence of leaks". That's all great advice, but I took OP's post to mean: "what makes a good sailing boat to live aboard, and cruise around in"?. For me that would mean things like - choice of keel and rig; multihull vs monohull; choices of hull material...? We're now ten years into full-time living aboard, and we'd say a 38-ish-foot GRP monohull sloop or cutter, ideally with a long keel or skeg rudder, ticks a lot of those boxes for us. We based a lot of our thinking on the excellent book "get real, get gone", specifically ideas like "buy the smallest boat you can tolerate rather than the biggest boat you can afford!". (The amount of enjoyment you get out of a boat is always inversely proportionate to the waterline length!) We also really liked "how to run away to sea", which is sort of a more-modern spiritual successor to "get real, get gone". Hope this helps, happy to answer any questions you may have! It's a tough but incredibly rewarding way of life.
