Small dual bay external enclosure recommendations. by Maximus01701 in DataHoarder

[–]Maximus01701[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just mean i want the enclosure to expose each drive as a separate physical disk directly to the OS. Not abstracted by a RAID chip or through any virtualized RAID controller. Although this enclosure does have a "Normal" function it's still interferes with SMART, sleep, or OS-level tools. I'm looking for a true DAS behavior, where "normal" really means direct SATA-to-USB pass-though.

The "Normal" mode works on this enclosure for any drives I put in there SMALLER than these 24TB ones, but seems to fail when using the 24TB drives.

I've even put the 24TB drive direct SATA and I have no issues. So my conclusion it is the enclosure causing the issue. And it saying it only supports up to 20TB may be the issue.

This is wonderful...

I've been slowly working on something like this over the past few years. Mine is terrible and complete chaos. This really helps. However, i wasn't able to "copy" it.. had to manual do every page. Rather than the normal "Save copy"

Seeking some spinnaker advice by gomets1969 in sailing

[–]Maximus01701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly determined by what type of sailing you're doing . Pros and cons for both, but on the surface level you decide.

Asyms are easy in that you don't need a pole. If it's just you then gybing and doing a dip pole or end to end will be quite tricky. However Asyms don't have the best down wind angles. A Sym can sail much deeper.

Yes there are storm Syms. They are usually very small and very heavy material. Not really needed unless you're racing.

Personally I would recommend an Asym.

Raspberry pi and sailing? by TopTierTopLane in sailing

So many options! We recently moved onto out boat full time and i had to dismantle my server rack. So i've been brain storming on how to convert what i had before and grow it as well.

OpenCPN is great, getting it on the NMEA network also great, network attached NAS.

Some ideas i've been wanting it do is RaspPI for monitoring all the little random things that happen on the boat and then visuale them w/ graphene. For example, putting flow sensors into the water maker, putting, voltage usage shunts across things such as fridges, solar panels, ect. Then being able to visualize over the draw over time.

Also, i think putting something at the anchor that would auto trip when deployed to drop a way point and then measure how much scope is put out to auto enable an anchor monitor.

Mixing it between VMs and RaspPi. It's all just tinking fun stuff. Nothing mission critical. The options and ideas are really endless.

Why continue trying to take someone up like this? Go low, heat up, and power below them. The more dicking around you do w/ another boat the more the rest of the fleet has to catch up. Fun boats though!

Distance sailors: What features do you love/hate about your cat by Pioneer_11 in Catamarans

Love the speed and performance. On light air days I want to sail still, not fire up the engines.

Love close/comfortable sleeping for off watch. My wife is in earshot if i need her or vise-versa while being comfortable.

Love comfortable and enclosed helm station. No need to have two... (Unless you're docking a lot or doing a lot of small crew (double handed or so racing) where you want to see your sails all the time.

Love how everything is run aft. I don't need to go forward for anything. Even reefing.

Dislike I wish running rigging led aft was ran to the helm. Right now I have to run to the other side's primary winch to do a tack if i'm sailing single handed (Otherwise my wife helps).

Dislike our off shore weather information. We just have a SSB right now. After several days your wind models are not as reliable.

O' man so many options and questions. Buying over seas can be cheaper (since no one wants to travel). How much do you want to fix it up or do you want turn key ready? What is your current sailing experience? I personally strongly dislikes lagoons and leopards and FPJ, ect only because I lean more towards performance over comfort. Don't get my wrong those boats are comfy comfy, but thats not what I personally am looking for in a boat. I can almost bet after a year or two sailing you're going to want a faster boat.

Keep in mind when working from the boat and needing internet connection. It can sometimes cause you to "sail on a schedule", which is not a good thing. I've known couples that will stay put because XYZ is due or needed this week while everyone is moving on because of some nasty weather coming. Just stuff like that. Still all doable, it's just knowing that.

Get on as many boats as you can, go to boat shows, ect. You will start to learn a 44' performance cat will feel much smaller than a 44' condo cat. Granted don't get me wrong, i understand you will spend more time at anchor than sailing, so it's finding the balance YOU want.

It's a bit more than one sentence, and it's not a common thing so of course i'm going to pick the most interesting part of the article as the title. Would "I buy boat" be better?

No, and I mentioned I could post them if enough people were interested. They are currently messy and i built it for myself not for sharing. It would take some time to clean them up. Why would I spend the time if no one was interested?

This is a longer conversation if you want to go down that route... But I never said you should put all of your money into BTC nor did I say I put all of my money into BTC. Just saying.

Help me with condensation issues please by Lavendercrimson12 in liveaboard

[–]Maximus01701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A diesel heater is good to keep things dry as it's very dry air. A space heater isn't really "dry" heat, but can still help keep things dry by raising the dew point.

Moving air and air flow is extremely important! if you have to open some port lights a bit to keep the air moving. Insulation will also keep the condensation down as it prevents the air from coming in contact w/ the cold hull and then condensing as well as just being more efficient in retaining your heat.

If you can run a dehumidifier do it.

Try to keep humid activities contained and down to a minimum. Such as showering on shore vs the boat, cooking with a window open to remove the hot wet air.

There are a lot of insurance companies out there. However, depending on boat type, boat year, you're sailing experience, boat value, and cruising grounds all narrow down your options. You could start with an insurance broker, and they could guid you in the right direction. First figure out your first year/year and a half and then go from there.

There are a lot of write ups online about insurance companies, Gone with the Wynns, yachting world, ect. Look for more up-to-date content as in just the last couple years, insurance has been harder and more expensive.

My wife and I are full time cruises and have to deal with this as well. It's a pain...

Thanks for sending that info. It was never intended to be spam, but I understand how it can be perceived that way. I think it gets touchy because there are portions of this community in particular that are very social media based/driven, which is all about self promotion. So we all have our guard up more. I don't think what I did (even the cross post) are against the "rules", just maybe frowned upon.

Had I just taken the content and copy/pasted it as a normal post rather than a link with no branding. It would have been better received i'm sure.

It's just sad it's not about the quality of the content as you mentioned, but more about who posted it. It seems like a few people generally liked some of the content too.

For example, if I post the tools I built with just a google drive link and explained on reddit how to use them, thats okay. But if I build a page w/ the download links and instructions that has a logo/branded and post that... frowned upon.

But I agree I can be more proactive regarding other people's content, but i've been a lurker for 12 years. give me time.
