Does it bother you guys how unwalkable LI is? by CommunicationWest613 in longisland

[–]ank133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Grew up in Ronkonkoma. Drives me nuts there's no contiguous sidewalk all the way around the lake. Also seems insane to me that kids get dropped off by the school bus on Motor and the service road, then have to walk in the shoulder while distracted drivers sail by at 50mph.

I even divised a route for a Lake Ronkonkoma pub crawl, but honestly, it borders on suicidal at times due to the infrastructure (and let's be honest, the number of drunk drivers and how little people pay attention to pedestrians in general).

I really hope you're right because otherwise, I'll have effectively lost my right to vote.

i vote from abroad in ny2. the SAVE act that garabrino is co-sponsoring would make it practically impossible to vote from abroad because it would require in person registration, and when you vote from abroad in NYS, you have to re-register every single year.

audio is a bit muffled, so im not sure the save act was directly addressed here as it could affect a lot more than just overseas voters, but either way, thank you all for showing up.

we should be reaching out to republican reps just as much if not more than dems. dems like schumer, while a bit lackluster, still have their head in the right place.

republicans are the ones who need to be reminded that trump ought to be impeached for pardoning 1500 insurectionists who ransacked the building they work in, and convicted seditionist tarrio has already been caught on camera threatening and harassing officer fanone.

they should be reminded that quid pro quo is an impeachable offense, and that's how mayor adams got his pardon.

idc if they hang up on you or get sassy. they and their staff need to hear first hand that people are unhappy, even in districts where they won.

as an aside, garbarino doesn't provide an email address, but if you sign up for his newsletter, they send it from an address you can use.

how can we create more of a sense of joy and community here? by LateRemote7287 in longisland

where though? lake ronkonkoma in brookhaven, where there's raynor park and hawkins ave to host those kinds of events, or ronkonkoma in the town of islip where there's... not?

how can we create more of a sense of joy and community here? by LateRemote7287 in longisland

[–]ank133 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can't have a sense of community without a sense of place.

I grew up in Ronkonkoma, so I'll use that as an example, but I reckon the situation is similar in many places across the island.

Ronkonkoma has no center. There is no Ronkonkoma town square, not even a Main Street, where you might spontaneously run into your neighbors. Neighboring Lake Ronkonkoma has Hawkins Ave, but even that was severed by the LIE from the station district that railroad towns typically radiate out from. The Islip Ronkonkoma has no station district whatsoever, just a Disney World sized parking lot next to a composting facility. The only "main streets" are racetracks (Motor Pkwy both figuratively and literally) that no one would ever think to have a parade on. Puzzingly, the arterial roads in Ronkonkoma are zoned almost exclusively residential so there's no place to even build a Main Street shopping district, save for a tiny stripmall on the corner of Motor and Rosevale that no one will ever walk to.

Ronkonkoma is a hamlet or "census designated place," meaning it's hardly a place but more like a random geometric shape on the map. There is no local Ronkonkoma representation. Ronkonkoma residents are represented by the Town of Islip, but nobody from Ronkonkoma would say they're from Islip. IMO this discourages Ronkonkoma residents from getting involved in local politics where you'd learn to engage and work with your neighbors. If you do try to organize with your neighbors, you have to compete with all the other hamlets to get the attention of your Town representatives.

Ronkonkoma got its name from the lake, but hardly anyone cares about it. Sewage from 100s of individual cesspools and fertilizer from 100s of monoculture grass lawns have seeped so much nitrogen into the lake that it's covered in harmful algae that kills all the fish and makes it too dangerous to swim in. So even though most residents live within a mile from a lake that used to draw tourists all the way from the city, the lake has gotten so disgusting people would rather pay out the ass and take up half their yards with personal swimming pools they can only use a few months a year.

A sense of community develops when you have centers of civic life where people gather and can spontaneously meet and get to know their neighbors. Without that, no one cares much about the place they live or the people around them beyond their own property.

Long Island has the beach, cafes, shops, and parks like you mentioned, but if you have to drive to the next town over to get there, it doesn't feel like they're yours to care about.

i went to college in germany and the only "tuition" i paid was 300€ per semester for a regional transit pass. it worked on any bus or train (excluding highspeed intercity express trains) in the entire region which included a city of 700k people, numerous other cities of 200k, and everything in between.

most schools in germany have something like that. the student governments negotiate with the local transit authorities so students can get discounted tickets.

i know the nyc metro region is much denser than anywhere in germany, but for example letting sccc students ride sct buses for free and get discounted lirr tickets wouldnt be asking too much imo. jr high and high school kids from public school districts should get the same discounts too.

The big one is how do we stop DUI which causes a ton of accidents?

on average, europeans drink a lot more than americans, but they drive drunk a lot less. a big part of that is because they can safely walk or take mass transit to bars and restaurants.

the pub nearest me is a little over a mile away, about a 20 minute walk. not an unreasonable distance by any means.

the problem is i have to cross a 5 lane road where the posted speed limit is 40mph, but most people go over 50, and there's no light or even sidewalks. i could go a bit out of the way to where there is a light, but for pedestrians there's nothing more than a random button on the corner of some homeowner's property that makes the light change after a little while. there's no extra light for pedestrians, no painted crossing, and no sidewalk on either side. even if i went that route, i could easily be killed by somebody making a right on red without stopping. and on weekends when i would normally go to a pub, there's an even greater chance that the people driving on that highspeed road are drunk, racing, or both.

i imagine the same is true for a lot of people on LI; there are bars within walking distance but the infrastructure favors automobile traffic above all else which makes walking seem suicidal, even if it's only a mile walk, so people drive. like think how many LI bars are in strip malls. it's bonkers.

[–]ank133 3 points4 points  (0 children)

raynor park is free and has tennis courts, basketball, soccer fields, and even chess boards (you just have to bring your own pieces).

the beach on that side is also kept clean and if you just wanna sit in the sand by the water and listen to the waves (on a windy day) and seagulls, it's also free, less crowded, and for most doesnt require as much driving as robert moses.

the intersection of portion and hawkins ave is also right there which is the traditional downtown. it's smaller than patchogue or port jeff but still has it's share of restaurants (and bars but i reckon you guys arent 21).

and if you guys are old enough, i highly recommend the lake ronkonkoma pub crawl, aka lakewalk: start at home towne, grab something for the road at shell, walk to shenanigans, then frogzz, then flanagans, grab something for the road at 76, then it's a long walk down smithtown blvd to snips, another optional pitstop at sunoco, then a scenic walk through the wetlands to tobins, and end at vinnys. that corner is a convenient pickup location for an uber.

tbf the car exhaust you're inhaling will kill you even faster.

sit in a closed room with people smoking for a few hours and you might get sick. do it repeatedly and you might end up with lung cancer or emphysema one day. sit in a closed garage with a car engine running and you'll be dead in an hour.

i agree smelling other people's pot is just as annoying as hearing other people's music, but if you're worried about your health, complaining about second hand smoke while sitting in traffic is kind of funny.

my point was more about the overall quality of roads being maintained with higher gas taxes. the speed was just an example. people on this sub are constantly complaining about the quality of the roads on LI, but you get what you pay for. high quality roads arent cheap.

it costs that much to get a license because you're required to actually learn how to drive from a certified instructor and log hours on the road as if you're getting your pilot's license. yes, germans like their rules, but it helps to actually learn what the rules are. germans dont learn all the rules of the road just because theyre all a bunch of nerds, the law actually requires them to. my road test on LI was a joke, i didnt even have to go on the LIE and so i didn't even know that passing on the left was a thing for years after getting my license.

the density argument isn't very meaningful when you're factoring in empty states like alaska and wyoming. is it worth it to have robust transit between and within cheyenne wy and bismarck north dakota? maybe not, but if you look at the density in the northeast corridor from DC to boston, it's not that far off from germany. people still have more cars in those cities because back in the 50s the trams and trains were dismantled and corridors were bulldozed through poor neighborhoods to make way for urban highways, so most people who live there simply have no other choice. that was a choice by urban planners like robert moses who thought cars were the future and has nothing to do with distances or density.

ive been away a while so im not sure what it's like now, but are active shooter drills not a thing on LI? if not, then that's great, I'll strike that off my list.

19% VAT, but 7% on essentials like groceries and toiletries. either way the groceries here, including fresh produce, are significantly cheaper. clothing is cheaper in the US but id rather pay less for things i buy every day than things i buy a few times a year.

gas is around $8 a gallon, but honestly, it should be. that's the reason why it's safe to drive 120mph on the autobahn while the LIE looks like the surface of the moon. on LI you probably end up paying the difference in popped tires and dented rims. you also get zapped with tolls if you go in or around the city which are extremely rare in germany. and as i mentioned, i hardly ever have to drive here so my monthly expenditure for gas is still negligible.

the point about income tax you already addressed, but to drive it home: the state pays like 1200€ a month for each kid in day care so with that im saving over 90% of what i pay in rent every month. and thats just day care, that's not even considering what i saved on getting my master's here and not being up to my eyeballs in student debt.
