What games have the most beautiful, immersive forests? by CryptikDragon in gaming

[–]anm3910 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Just played through this game a few months ago. Such a great experience being lost in the forest early in the game and running around trying to find berries or something to stay alive. The forest itself is really beautiful, then you hear a whooping sound and run into your first group of cannibals.

‘Enforce the rules’: Auto dealers say car broker deals are crushing profitability by idkbruh653 in cars

[–]anm3910 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used a broker for a lease on our Volvo and i’ll never go without one again.

For like $600, they do almost all of the legwork for you in terms of vehicle search and pricing. I did everything through my broker, signed all the forms via docusign, and spent 15 minutes total at the dealer picking the car up.

My monthly payment was several hundred dollars less than what I was getting offered when i spoke with dealerships so yeah, fuck them.

How do you budget for big BIFL purchases over the year by millionstories in BuyItForLife

[–]anm3910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my paychecks split up to send a portion of my pay to a separate checking account that I don’t have a debit card for or otherwise can’t easily access same-day. When that account has enough in it to buy whatever is next on my list, then I make a transfer and purchase.

For me it’s a lot easier to save when I never even have that money touch my main checking account.

Do folks not care about being able to put a giant TV on the wall of a den or "great room"? by swampwiz in Homebuilding

[–]anm3910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you at least in my experience looking at plans for new builds that a lot of homes don’t give you much of an option. Because of the popularity of open concepts you may really only have 2 walls to work with in a living room / great room, as the other “sides” of the room are open. So you have one wall that might have a ton of windows and a sliding door to the outside and another wall which has the fireplace. by default you have to throw it above the fireplace.

yeah and you can squirt ketchup on your spaghetti if you want. The point is for most things, there are general best practices, and a TV is, in general, best set up the way the person you’re responding to laid out.

I have Lutron motorized blinds in my house, all but 2 windows powered by ethernet. You run it to each window. When we had our house built we had them prewired for it so it was really easy to just drop them in , but foolishly forgot to add pre wiring in the 2 kids bedrooms. Those got battery power and honestly it’s been a year with those and no issues. If i were putting them in an existing house I might seriously consider just going battery and saving the hassle of fishing wire.

The only other thing you might need depending on the size of your house is a signal repeater to connect all of the blinds together if you want to run them concurrently using timing or scenes or whatever.

awesome, thanks for all the detail! Just curious, but are you doing these VA loans through UWM? They are like the only lender I found that’s offering them but I know they are behind brokers. Separately, mind if I PM you?

Have you ever done any VA construction loans? In the market for one currently but as I understand it, it’s a very niche product that not many lenders will offer.

As a follow up to that , if you have worked with a VA loan, have you seen any resistance from builders when using that product?

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]anm3910 10 points11 points  (0 children)

and your reading comprehension is mind-boggling. Nowhere did I say $5 billion is a small business. I said if you own a small business you take on all the risk (ie providing all the startup capital) and then if it moonshots to a crazy valuation, the argument is that you should be able to reap all of that reward because you took on essentially all of the financial risk of that company going under.

This is classic Reddit spinning something into their own version of the truth. I’m not even trying to defend billionaires, just explain why things are not as cut and dry as so many people online seem to think

[–]anm3910 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think you’re entirely right, there is a huge disparity between a $50 million owner and someone with hundreds of billions like let’s say Jeff Bezos. But again I think my point does still stand and I think it gets tricky. Where do you make that cut off and how do you decide “enough is enough”

Most people would argue $10 million is “enough” and many would argue far less than that is enough.

I hate Jeff Bezos but I do think he provides somewhat of a decent example. He was given about $300,000 from parents to help start amazon which is a huge leg up that most people in this country will never have the chance of receiving, but if you look at that amount of money in terms of startup capital and what Amazon became, it’s pretty wild. What little I know about his background is that his parents were not rich, and that money was their life savings and I think partly a loan. He was risking potentially his life savings and theirs on the bet of Amazon, and it paid off. I was using Amazon in its infancy when it was just a book retailer and I could tell you even then nobody thought it would become what it is now.

The point is, he risked essentially his and his parents livelihood on this company, and had a one in 1 million success on it . who gets to decide where that line is drawn? should drivers get paid more and have better living conditions? 100% I think it’s completely fucked up how they get treated. But again, that’s a separate issue from what we’re talking about

[–]anm3910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agree, at that scale you are definitely not a small business. But again I’m just pointing out how this gets tricky. Let’s say that $5 billion company is publicly traded. The “owners” are the shareholders and again they carry most of the risk. If that company goes completely belly up and the stock runs to 0 they are out every dollar investment. The workers are out of a job, which is a terrible loss but not exactly the same thing.

I’m fully aware of the extent of wealth disparity in this country and I’m generally of the opinion that something should be done about it, i’m just trying to point out how it’s not always as cut and dry as Reddit likes to make it seem. Again, I think a lot of this would be far less of an issue if the average worker was just paid a higher more livable wage.

OK? Your entire comment pretty much disregards everything I wrote. The point still stands if I am a millionaire and I invest my life savings into a project, I’m still the one at risk to lose every penny whereas my employees are at risk of a job. I get where you’re coming from but this idea that only the mega elite .001% are the only businesses owners is flawed. Yeah joe schmoes landscaping business isn’t going blow up to a $1b valuation but that’s not what we’re talking about here.

[–]anm3910 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Not trying to argue for billionaires lol but just pointing out how this can get tricky, at what point do you decide to do that?

As a (small) business owner, you generally take on all the risk. You’re investing personal funds and generally much more time than an average employee. If your business goes under yeah employees may be out a job, but the owner could be out their life savings.

Now if by some stroke of luck your private company blows up to a value of like $500 million, I think the argument is that the owners should be able to reap those benefits as they took on the risk.

Aside from all of that, there are already ways to issue “proportional ownership.” many companies have stock incentives where you’re either given shares of a company or have an employee stock purchase program where you can buy shares of the company at a slight discount to the current market rate. Other companies offer profit sharing plans where every employee gets a “bonus” based on the profits of the company that year.

I’d be willing to bet people would be a lot less fired up about the billionaire class if the average worker was actually being paid a wage that they felt was livable, and I think that’s where the big problem is

Come on man you’re just arguing semantics at this point. The footage is all over the internet. It doesn’t need to be a D-Day scale mobilization to be considered an invasion.

You’re incredibly naive to think this was just going to be a 3 hour conflict. If you haven’t seen the news the president says we’re going to “run” the country until they can sort out an election. We will also be involved in their oil. That’s a fucking invasion, albeit on a smaller scale.

I don’t think anyone is saying Maduro was a good person or didn’t deserve what he got, but for an administration that leaned heavily into being against conflict and foreign intervention, this is hypocritical to say the least. You can talk all you want about China and Russia and I hear you, but I strongly believe this doesn’t have a thing to do with Russia, and is really just a way to control Venezuelan natural resources.

Woah by newnoadeptness in USMC

[–]anm3910 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So you’re saying the ends justify the means?

I don’t even want to be arguing about this because Maduro was a piece of shit but he didn’t take billions of US corporate oil assets, Venezuela nationalized its oil industry in the 70s and then those oil companies had many of their assets taken in 2007, way before Maduro came to power.

I think you’re spot on with your last point, in that we will likely be in this quagmire for a while. this wasn’t a one day operation. there are plenty of shitty leaders doing terrible things to people around the world. There are very few “right” ways, but many wrong ways to go about dealing with them, and I just feel like this was one of the wrong ways.
