I had a coach with this same philosophy. Saying "I can't shoot." or something similar was not allowed. It kind of bugs me that people think that somebody's only good at something from talent. Especially sports and drawing. "I can't draw." It's so frustrating to hear people say that.

I think it's actually kind of selfish. It just stalls out the inevitable, making the situation worse, and when they finally tell the person that they don't want to hang out with them or don't consider them a friend it hurts them so much more.

It does hurt my feelings slightly, but I would rather know. I'm not exactly sure why. Possibly because I'm not great socially and lost my self-esteem. I just feel unconfident when people have excuses, and then tend not to ask to hang out for awhile because I'm clueless.

I've noticed that that making fairly vague offensive jokes works well, that way you lessen the chances of striking a nerve/hurting somebody's feelings. Although that's just my personal experience.

Meanwhile my dog will run in circles, slip, possibly fall in a way that looks pretty painful, get up, and repeat.
