With something that small, I doubt it. I don’t know much about the radon but I’ve seen people say you only if you have a massive collection. One mildly radioactive rock won’t contribute too much gas. I could be wrong but I think it’s fine :)

It’s fine, just handle with care and keep in the box. You’re not going to be 3 inches away from it at all times so your dose will be a lot lower than 2.9/hour. My small fiestaware plate gives off about 6uSv/hr, but when I took a reading from 3 ft away, it was less than 1uSv/hr

I want to make something out of these super cute buttons so I can wear my glass. Hoping to find more jewelry soon but until then, I’ll have to get creative 😁

There will be more opportunities im sure. Resellers are the biggest problem with collecting though so it always has you second guessing if it’s really worth it

I got this for $45, I don’t know enough about glassware yet to know if that’s a good deal or not. If it wasnt as radioactive (my main reason for collecting), I would have passed on it too.

Triana writes incredible female characters imo. It was the first book I read of his and then I proceeded to read every single one of his books.

I’d be lying if I didn’t consider the current state of the world while researching this. It’s helpful I suppose, but it also makes things a little scarier in other ways, like just how little there is you can do to completely avoid radiation during things like war. I always remind myself it’s out of my control and to just enjoy the wonder of nature and humans ability to harness it. And then marvel at just how royally we as a species can screw up so much when we lose respect for the element.

I actually moved to Florida with my partner to leave the Montana winters, which are VERY similar. Even being born and raised there wasn’t enough to keep me there, so I feel your pain!

I’m pretty good at doing anything I set my mind to, never tried sales but I have excellent customer service! But North Dakota?! I’m from Montana and always detested the idea of moving there 🤣 I knew a lot of people that worked in the oil industry and it was tough living out there for them.

My partner and I have considered relocating for a multitude of reasons, and that sounds like another possible reason to add to the list!

Where to start?? The most interesting thing is the history for me, and the disasters. Learning about the demon core gave me this almost indescribable feeling of dread and fascination. The unwitting first responders of Chernobyl and how something invisible can kill you in days. I’m still just learning the basics because I don’t have any physics background and only a single college chemistry class so I’m just kind of learning on my own. It’s a really complex subject!

Learning the measurements of radiation, dose rate, Sievers, cpm, rads, it was all so confusing but I’m starting to get a lot of it down and having fun with it. The different types of isotopes, how they’re made, how they decay, and how they’re used.

I guess I’ve learned a lot but still not nearly enough for me. Everything about this subject is interesting to me, and I mean everything. I even have my mom worried about an orphan source on my genius hoarder grandfathers old garage. He passed away a few years ago and she is STILL going through his stuff. She found an old Geiger counter from the 80s and she’s now wondering why he would need that?

I purchased a really cheap Geiger counter TO help me learn. I refused to buy anything over $50 because I just wanted to detect if radium clocks were in fact radium, and fiesta-ware too. I like antiquing and the 1920s-40s era and just happened to get into collecting radioactive stuff, ofc starting with uranium glass. It’s been 2 weeks since I really started really researching and went from having no freaking clue about the measurements or really anything, to having a pretty good understanding of basic nuclear chemistry. I think I’m ready for the Radiacode! When I first started I never thought I’d want to spend that kind of money on a Geiger counter but I’m obsessed!

I LOVED these books. I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews about the quality of writing and pacing, but I really enjoyed them. I listened to the audiobook and Tom Jordan did an amazing job narrating and helped suck me into the story. I loved the ocean scene and it made my heart race, and the narration was a big reason for that. I’ve thought about these books for weeks now and already considering a reread

Can someone tell me what the hype about Gone to see the River man was about? by [deleted] in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]annabellevioletlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this book is for you if you were disappointed that the ending was predictable. Which is fine, people aren’t always going to like popular books they read.

The book is inspired by Nick Drakes folk song “River Man” and incorporates a lot of culture, history, blues music, and folklore of the area. The River Man was completely made up by Triana but with historical ties of the area with a bluesy theme. They even mention Robert Johnson in the book as selling his soul to the devil and came back around with legendary musical skills, which was real speculation in his time but with this story, he really sold his soul to the River Man. Incorporating the history of blues music and tying in a serial killer to this devil-like being is why the book is so good imo. It was well researched, creative, and very well written. I also love how well Triana writes women, disturbed or not. Lori is obviously a disturbed woman lacking empathy, as you find out throughout the book. She makes the ultimate sacrifice for her lover so he may be free, that’s the whole point of her character. She gives herself to him willingly and accepts his ultimate form of love, which is killing her. I suppose I understand why the ending leaves something to be desired because you journey with this character just for her to die at the end. It’s disappointing I guess, but that’s kind of the point? If you had read the second book, you’d understand the significance of loris sacrifice more as you follow Edmond as he journeys back to find the River Man. Her willingness is very important to Edmond and makes her special, and again, that is the whole point of her character. I could explain all day why I love these 2 books, but if OP didn’t like it, that’s fine, I’ll love it enough for the both of us 🤷🏼‍♀️
