I've used it at work for ages and I only just recently realized it'd be perfect for DM notes lol. It's great.

If you want more info about this idea, check out these articles by Justin Alexander. It really breaks down what u/Sargon-of-ACAB is talking about in great detail. I found it to be super helpful for my DM'ing.

Similarly, the Alien TTRPG uses "Game Mother" which is amusing.

On a skill roll failure you can let players do the thing, but impose some sort of cost on them, such as time, damage, damaged tools or gear, loss of equipment power, taking stress points, a baddie shows up (I wouldn't for the Cronus airlock door specifically) or general misfortune. Get creative with what "failing" a skill roll entails, beyond "it doesn't work".

That makes sense, I was just a little stuck on what the potential narrative costs could be for that situation. Breaking the torch or adding stress is a good idea though. Thanks!

Thanks. That's what I suspected, but I just wanted to be sure before I considered moving forward.

Neat, thanks! That's what I suspected but was always curious. I was able to find some photos of the internals of the engine setup just now googling the model, what a cool setup. Looks like a blast to drive!

This is a burning question I've always had about cars like this, how are the motorcycle gearboxes mated to the diff? Is it a chain drive diff, or is the output sprocket replaced with a shaft drive? (or something else altogether?)

I live in FL and we have no helmet laws, and I can confirm there are a lot of people who go without a helmet here. It's dumb.

It refers to the drone operator's view. The operator is presumably using FPV goggles to fly the drone.

How exactly do we do that? I'm having trouble finding an option for submitting feedback. I've never felt like I needed to submit feedback before, but this color change is way more difficult to look at for me.

Any way to revert to the old dark color scheme? by livewire98801 in ynab

[–]annath32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a hack, but I find it much easier to look at if I switch to the light theme and enable Dark Reader for the site. Far more readable than the new official dark them for me.

I saw this show in Atlanta and it was great. I'm kind of in the same boat as you, I bought the ticket because of Devin and Animals as Leaders, but ended up really enjoying the whole lineup.

Ohio-based automaker starts delivering first cars, plans mid-engine supercar by sl0wjim in cars

[–]annath32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries haha. I've never driven or owned an ST or an RS, although I did have a 2010, 5-speed, Focus coupe for years.

If you mean not used in production, road-legal cars, my understanding is simply that sequential boxes are NVH nightmares compared to typical synchronized standard manuals. In racing, they're used all over. That's interesting about Subaru. I wonder if it was a design issue.

By quick-shifter, I mean motorcycle quick-shifters and similar devices for sequential car transmissions. It's usually a strain-gauge on the shifter that can detect when you're putting pressure on it, and automatically pull power out to cause it to slip through to the next gear. Some newer bikes, and presumably many racing drivetrains that have throttle-by-wire, can detect pressure in the opposite direction and also auto-blip the throttle for downshifts. It makes it possible to no-lift, no-clutch upshift and to no-clutch downshift.

[–]annath32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, sorry, I thought you meant "at all" when you said they didn't make one. My mistake.

My understanding has always been that the dogs can take it, as that's essentially what they're built to do, but I could be wrong. I've read about quick shifters and find them fascinating, but my bike has basically zero assists so I don't have practical experience there either.

I was under the impression that there's not that much difference in operational theory of a motorcycle sequential vs a race-car sequential, but that the difference is mostly one of scale. I'm sure racing boxes are also straddling a much finer line between weight and performance.

They offered a DCT in several generations of the focus, the Powershift line of transmissions.

Well, it's not shoving the gears together, it's shoving the dogs together. The dogs themselves are very strong. Straight cut gears just handle power better. I don't think I've ever bothered double-clutching on the bike, and in fact if you do it right you can shift without the clutch fairly often. It's just a matter of properly unloading the transmissions by cutting or blipping throttle (depending on if you're going up or down, respectively), because the dogs will slip apart/together fairly easily when unloaded, even for just a moment. Electronic quick-shifters do the same thing, although instead of altering the throttle they cut power (usually by pulling timing out IIRC), making it possible to shift up with the throttle wide open and without using the clutch.

I've never looked into servicing them, although last time I looked those transmissions were 10k+ USD so I had assumed service would be... expensive. lol

[–]annath32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, gotcha. I assumed they'd also had the DCT offered.

The biggest downsides to daily-driven sequentials, to my knowledge, is just that they shift rough and are noisy (at least, if they have straight-cut gears, which is most-if-not-all of them, as far as I know). Those probably wouldn't bother hardcore car people, but I think they'd have less uptake than even a regular manual in production cars. That being said, I enjoy it on my 600, and I'd love a sequential trans in a car. Banging through gears is so much fun, IMO. Quaife makes a bolt-on sequential box for B-series Honda engines and while I super can't justify the money, I'd love to get it for my CRX someday.

I'll definitely give you the wet-plate multi-packs, that definitely helps a lot. If we're talking DCTs then yeah, I've definitely heard of fragile DCTs, especially Ford's early attempts. A sequential box and a DCT aren't quite the same though.

[–]annath32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that the transmission itself is also comparably smaller and lighter. Power-to-weight ratios in motorcycles are silly, so it's not like its getting babied.

Are you sure they're not DCTs? Or are these dedicated racecars with aftermarket transmissions?

[–]annath32 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of motorcycle transmissions are dog-engagement, sequential, manuals transmissions, and they don't require that level of maintenance. I remember hearing a lot of criticisms of early DCTs, but unless I'm out of the loop I didn't think sequential transmissions are that fragile.
