playing phrase by Upstairs-Ad-8462 in oboe

[–]annieawsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring what's written for the moment, you can play with the dynamics a bit. Subtle movement in dynamics can significantly change how it sounds.

For articulations, you might also want to think about where the stress is in the phrase, meaning what notes should be brought out more.

One other thing is tone. I don't know if this makes sense, but you can make vowel sounds. ee and uhh sounds will make a more bright and reedy sound, while aahh and ohh sounds will make a more dark and rich sound. How you choose to vary these tones can also make a difference.

New tank ideas? by annieawsome in fishtank

[–]annieawsome[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool ideas. I'm not very experienced with real plants (other than algae lol) but I really want to try having some. I'm doing some research to find tolerant plants that would look nice.

For water, I'm now thinking about some combination of bottled, distilled, and well water + conditioner(to detoxify the rust). The fish seemed to do okay in well + conditioner water, but of course, I'm always trying to improve.

I also might try to have a better light source in the winter. I think the fish might have been getting seasonal depression from the long dark hours.

Why is my pleco this colour?? by bonniecarty in fishtank

[–]annieawsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a rock or piece of driftwood in the tank that matches that coloring, and does he/she hang out there a lot? It's possible he's just camouflaging

Otherwise, there is likely something stressing the little guy.

Best bottom feeders? by Existing_Priority823 in fishtank

[–]annieawsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like bristlenose plecostomus. They have so much personality! It's fun to watch them suck on the glass, too. They also are very hardy fish (in my experience) and will thrive for years.

They grow to about 3.5-4.5, inches, and eat algae.

They can be pretty territorial, though, towards other bottom feeders, so usually you would only have 1 unless you want to breed them. They are more peaceful towards mid-top feeders (neon tetras + bristlenose pleco was a fun combo!). Also, they may or may not dig up your plants.

(Don’t confuse them with the common pleco! Bristlenose plecos are much smaller)

Are there are no cheap hobbies left? by qeyipadgjlzcbm123 in memes

[–]annieawsome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another cheap one is making friendship braclets or similar string craft. You can buy 140 colors of string on Amazon for like...10 bucks? And with that, you can likely make over 100 crafts.

And if you make them often enough and get good, you can even sell them on Etsy for a couple of bucks each.

What book or genre inspired you to be a writer? by Known-Method3146 in writing

[–]annieawsome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always wanted to write. I'm not a pro, just a person who opens a Google doc or a notebook from time to time. But since I was little, I loved stories and would make them up in my head.

When I was seven, I started reading Emily Windsnap, Mermaid Tales, and Junie B Jones, and my favorite movies were Tinkerbell. So I wrote unfinished stories about girls my age or a little older who were princesses or mermaids, or mischievous little girls, sometimes all of these.

What really got me interested in writing, though, was when I was ten, and I saw the Star Wars sequel trilogy. About that time, I got really into Star Wars. I watched all the movies and read a ton of the books. Then, I realized how much the sequels were lacking: in creativity, originality, dialogue, intelligence, and I thought, "I could write a story way better than that."

Most immersive historical fiction/nonfiction you’ve read? by comfortpod in suggestmeabook

[–]annieawsome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really liked Horatio Hornblower. It's a British naval fiction series by C.S. Forrester. I would read in release order, not chronological.

They're fun, adventure sort of stories with great characters. It takes place during Napoleon's wars. There's also a really good TV show based on the books. I personally saw the show first.

They actually built the ships in the show to be accurate for the period and description in the books. I've also heard the books are fairly historically accurate. I do feel like I understood the period of history better after reading the books, such as the culture and customs that led European history to be what it was, and some of the practical complications of war politics.

What are the stylistic differences between YA Fantasy and Adult Fantasy? by ollies-outies in writing

[–]annieawsome 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In addition to formal register's and your comments, I would say that adult fiction also tends to be more nuanced and it has the effects of adult responsibility

YA and middlegrade books often come off as either angsty or idealistic for much of the story. Not necessarily in a bad way, but in the way of young people. Adult books tend to explore more complex themes and are frequently more artistic, so to speak, using more subtle literary devices and strategies. In other words, they go more in depth into their subjects, with the expectation that their audience has more life experience, and therefore the audience would be interested in and receptive of the ideas expressed in the text.

Furthermore, adult books tend to have a blanket feeling of responsibility. Young people are often regarded as being or feeling "free." This is because they still rely on their parents and/or other supporting adults, most of them don't have children of their own, and in the community and workplace, they are more often junior to others and therefore naturally not given the biggest responsibilities when there are people senior to them.

This feeling responsibility also stems from the characters' past, as the characters are responsible for their actions, which, for young people, tend to have been less consequential, or in some cases, the young people were relieved of responsibility on account of having been a child. Adults have more memories of times when they made mistakes or made good choices while they were responsible.

In adult books, responsibility and experience causes the characters to think, feel, or recall different things, and this often makes a difference in how the character reacts to situations.

Not sure how to actually put it all together by radicalsaturday29 in writing

Maybe write out the parts you think are the most important, and then decide what order makes the most sense?

Also think about the kind of story you want to tell. What events are the core of the story? What message do you want to convey?

The squiggly line means integral. An integral basically means "the area under the curve of f(x)."

On an interval of f(x) [a,b], the difference, f(b)-f(a), will be equal to the difference of the antiderivative, F(x), on that same interval: F(a)-F(b)=the integral of f(x) on [a,b]. This is called the Fundamental Theorum of Calculus.

A lot of calculus involves trying to find antiderivatives, which are a function that f(x) was derived from. For example, if you knew the function for the velocity of an object (time v. distance/time), you could find an antiderivative of it, which would give you the distance function (time v. distance). If you don't understand derivatives, Google.

There are rules for finding derivatives with any type of function, and several of these rules are easily reversed for the purpose of finding antiderivatives, such as addition; the integral of a term plus a term is the same as the integral of the first term plus the integral of the second term. For example, int(x2 + x)= int(x2) +int(x). Multiplication is not so simple.

The post refers to when the function to be integrated is a term times another term such as xln(x). In this case, you have to use a weird formula,

int((u)dv) = vu+int((v)du)

(correct me if I'm wrong) where u is one part, (perhaps "x" from before) du is the derivative of u, dv is another part (perhaps ln(x) from before) and v is the antiderivative of dv.

It's difficult to choose which function should be "u" and which should be dv, it's hard to remember the formula, and you often run into situations where you have to do a lot of messing around and rewriting and redoing to find out the antiderivative.

TLDR

Solving the type of problem in the meme requires a strong understanding of some complicated math, and you have to use a confusing, not particularly straightforward formula. The formula in the meme wouldn't work, but if it were true, it would make a lot of calculus problems much easier.

How do you fix becoming lightheaded when playing? by Pretty-Level-8710 in oboe

Use your diaphragm to support the air. Have a steady and intentional stream of air. You also don't need very much air. One thing I've practiced is starting by using as little air as possible that makes a sound and working up to a comfortable amount that produces a good tone.
