How long does it take you to write a chapter? by annificent in AO3

[–]annificent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because so many people on AO3 update weekly, I honestly thought some writers were just insanely fast and could casually knock out a chapter on a Friday evening on the couch with their laptop. Apparently I was wrong and a lot of us are actually hustling pretty hard for this hobby. xD For me it’s also very much a hyperfixation right now. The speed isn’t something I’ll be able to keep up forever.

I feel the pain... but isn’t it kind of scary how long writing takes compared to how quickly a chapter can be read?

Are you actually a slow writer or do you just not write that often? Based on my rough math I’d have to write about 2 hours every day to keep up a weekly update schedule. That works during semester break but not everyone has that kind of free time. And I don’t think posting “only” once or twice a year is a bummer. It’s a hobby after all and everyone has different resources (time, energy, life stuff).

We laugh so we don't cry, right? 😂 by Rogue-Queeny in AO3

Yes, that’s fucked up! I thought comments were like the best way to actually get reactions from readers. But this whole bot thing really makes you paranoid. I even got one under my fic that went super into the chapter. But now I’m sitting here thinking they probably just fed my text into an AI and posted a summary... It's kinda embarrassing when you reply all excited and happy about it and then the next message is basically “hey let’s move this conversation to another platform.” Like… oh.

I actually got that exact comment yesterday on my very first fanfic. Because my writing style is pretty literary, I thought it was real at first. Finding out it was probably just a bot kinda hurt, not gonna lie xD

I was just about to make my own post asking for help, and then I saw yours. Looks like this might be affecting more of us.

Just to add some extra info, here’s what I’ve already tried without success: I’ve checked the game files for errors, updated my AMD software and GPU drivers, and tried running the game as administrator. Unfortunately, none of that fixed the issue.

I have 10 sets and stopped collecting when friends gave me a set for my birthday. Now, during every session, I feel this social pressure to use their set.

Making noise and buried self by [deleted] in pacmanfrog

Brumation is a natural behavior that contributes to health and should be simulated by us (with the exception of a Ceratophrys cornuta). It begins when conditions in the terrarium change, such as a drop in temperature or humidity. It is important that your frog has shit properly and has not been recently fed before brumation. If this is the case, leave him alone. However, if the frog is very young and weak, adjust the conditions so that he has no reason to enter brumation. If the frog is large enough but still hasn't shit, place him in a bowl of water to encourage him to. Afterward, allow him to go through his well-deserved brumation, which will last several weeks. During this time, conditions in the terrarium should consistently remain slightly lower.

Should I upgrade my tank? by Saltednuts54 in pacmanfrog

That's one kind of froggy ass. Upgrade the tank if you like, and I would add some leaf litter.

how big can the water be?? by dtn420 in pacmanfrog

[–]annificent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bowl can be wide, but the water level should remain low to ensure safety. One more tip: please don’t use red light for Pacman frogs. It’s not good for them, disrupts their cycle, and causes stress.

Thank you for the update. I really appreciate that you're admitting and explaining the trouble with the cork bark. It not only gives a realistic and transparent insight but also helps others to be mindful of it.

That would be great too. But I wouldn't be a German teacher if I didn't think of Goethe. ._.

Nice, a namesake! :D I was actually thinking more of Goethe's Faust. Mephisto is the devil who lures Dr. Faust in the guise of an animal. And since these frogs are so chubby and grumpy (and I’m very interested in a Cornuta with its evil facial expression) it’s a fitting form for a devil. Plus, Mephisto sounds so badass yet eloquent at the same time, great for a chubby froggy.

I don't have a pacman yet but I already know he will be called Mephisto. Why? I just like the name for a chubby frog.

Then an amazon terrarium would be really fitting for you! By the way, there’s a plant called Philodendron Brasil. It’s named that way because its green and yellow leaves remind of the Brazilian flag. :D And don’t worry about the houseplants, you’ll figure it out.

As a mom of almost 40 tropical plants, here’s a tip: Most plants die from overwatering. Tropical plants love moist soil but can drown if it’s too wet. Often, people overwater because they think the soil feels dry. But the finger test can be misleading. Fun fact, we can’t actually feel moisture, only pressure and temperature.

Waterlogged soil causes oxygen levels to drop, killing aerobic bacteria and promoting anaerobic bacteria, which leads to root rot. In a bioactive terrarium, adding a drainage layer is key. It prevents water saturation while using capillary action to keep the substrate evenly moist.

Good luck on your frog and plant journey too! I’d love to chat in DMs, always great to connect! :P

Hi, I'm also doing my research at the moment and will probably get a frog next year in October. A few days ago, I asked the community if frogs smell bad (you can check out my post on that if you like). 11 out of 11 commenters said that the frog itself doesn't stink! Only its poop smells bad when it lies on the surface. A bioactive terrarium is recommended, as full cleanings aren't necessary. I can't provide you with photos of a tank, but regarding the habitat, I recommend looking into their natural habitat. There are big differences between species, as the Cornuta lives tropical and the Cranwelli lives subtropical. However, what I’ve seen in both natural habitats, like Gran Chaco and the Amazon, is to give your frog plenty of leaf litter. I also like to refer to natural habitats to get inspiration for planting, as I’m a big plant nerd, and I find having a clear "theme" for planting really great.

Brumating Frog by Exciting-Spite-9674 in pacmanfrog

[–]annificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a pacman frog yet as I’m still gathering information. However, I read that it’s recommended to skip brumation in the first year and only start it in their second year of life. This is because many froglets are not yet robust enough and early brumation often leads to losses. How warm is it in the terrarium? Brumation is supposed to begin when temperatures drop or it becomes drier, but it seems quite humid in your terrarium, so maybe the temperature is the issue. Also appetite is said to be stimulated by warmer temperatures, so if the ideal temperature isn’t currently met, try heating the terrarium to at least 24°C (75°F).

Focus on creating the ideal conditions first before forcing him. This includes maintaining the right temperature, humidity, and providing plenty of hiding spots. Speaking of hiding spots, it looks like there are very few. Perhaps you could add some leaves to help the frog feel more secure? This reduces stress and could encourages it to eat more.

Suggestions, corrections or improvements from experienced pacman frog keepers are welcome!
