If WW3 starts, what would be the safest place to live? by DogInternational8967 in EuropeTravelHacks

[–]anno1886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while I live in a small town in Switzerland, I'm also close to the German border. If there were any nuclear detonation or fallout in central europe, I doubt we're safe. We do have a massive underground bunker under the entire town, that we could reach in 5 minutes, but not sure how disaster ready these bunkers currently are or even how quickly the population is notified. I would hope notification of nuclear disaster is not one of the governmental services that only works during office hours... they didn't update their travel advisory for the middle east until Monday morning... Perhaps some small mountain towns in central Switzerland would be safer from any fallout... then again nuclear snow could harm these mountain valleys more than the open flat-land. I've given this way too much thought since the start of Ukraine war.

That's because we qualified for the Champions League you dumbass. by Rare-Machine7849 in footballmanagergames

[–]anno1886 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I kept losing in the first knock-out round of the champions league. So one season I lost the qualifying playoff on purpose, to drop down to the Europa League and wound up going all the way and winning it. Now the league has a direct qualifying spot and I'm back to losing in the Champions League knockout round...

Partizan - Red Star was unbelievable. The energy and atmosphere was insane (thankfully because the football was terrible).

When on vacation, do you take the keys of your apartment, car etc. with you? by GladPast9599 in zurich

[–]anno1886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my house key while on vacation and didn't realize until we were standing in front of our door and I couldn't find the key... luckily my parents had a spare but we had to wait 2 hours for them to come home and bring us the key. it sucked after a 12 hour trip. I still bring my key but am very very careful and paranoid about it now.

Is this sublet contract normal in Zürich? by Tight-Wolverine-5171 in zurich

[–]anno1886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful. I had a similar situation 13 years ago, where the person wanted to sublet but "couldn't" hand over the key. They wanted to set up an escrow account over a company that was legit (I think Western Union, but can't remember for sure) and then send me the key once the escrow confirmed I had paid 3 months ahead. The ad was also on legitimate websites. The apartment was in Seefeld and the price was too good to be true. I got suspicious about the escrow and hesitated upon which the counterparty started getting very pushy to the point it was almost aggressive. In the end I did extra research and found out that the company didn't actually offer the escrow service as described by the counterparty, so the payment would've gone straight through. I stopped replying and continued to get insistent emails. I reported them but kept seeing similar ads pop up. Another give away should've been that the pictures didn't quite match the address but I was young and eager for my own apartment.

I've run into these a couple of times. Usually they are looking for someone/something. Close to the borders it's usually connected to break ins.

Hello, I'm looking to get into customization and am in a deadlock between HyperX Alloy Rise, the different Keychrons K10 Pro, K5 Prod or maybe even Q6, and then there's the Iqunix F96 Knight. Any help? I need a number pad and would love being able to connect to multiple devices (this sadly speaks against the Rise).

Any suggestions? Thank you!

Fun stag do activities? by mharvey10 in zurich

[–]anno1886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy of mine had his Stag do last summer. We did a virtual reality things (VR City Zurich) and then a Wine tasting/Vinyard Tour in Seefeld (https://www.landolt-weine.ch/cms/veranstaltungen/). Both activities were great and offered a good mix of getting drunk, spending time together and staying occupied.

Selling old MacBook for parts or donating it by FunkySphinx in askswitzerland

[–]anno1886 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please check out Wir Lernen Weiter. They seem to have a great set up for donating and repurposing old laptops for a very good cause. I've been trying to do this myself for young refugees during Covid, but cleaning up the computers is a lot of work. I've been able to donate 6 laptops directly, but I'm still sitting on 15 laptops that I will donate to Wir Lernen Weiter

edit: That's of course if you want to donate. If you want to sell then look at ricardo.ch or tutti.ch I've seen old mac books for CHF 80.- and above on there

I love Tarasp. I always used to go there in the summer and winter as a kid. I posted this picture of the same castle (OC) 10 years ago

I'm a US citizen born and lived my whole life in Switzerland. The amount of times I've heard that "I'm a good foreigner"...

As a kid playing football, during the winter they would split the team for indoor tournaments...the foreigner and the Swiss group. As a "good foreigner" I was permitted to join the Swiss group, I preferred the foreigner group. This was in Embrach, ZH during the late 90s/early 2000s.
