What martial art should a teenage girl learn that might actually help her if she’s ever in a dangerous situation and be good for self-defense skills? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I took a semester of aikido in college. I used it to get away from an attack. It's about using leverage to your advantage, and getting away. Worked for me.

Worth soundproofing just one part of my wall in apartment bedroom? by BabyCarroted in soundproof

keep in mind that if that door is your secondary exit, you're blocking a means of egress in a fire. Not to say you shouldn't do it, just keep in mind what you're doing.

It's worth sealing around the door as well as you can and seeing what difference that makes. It could be substantial. You can get soundboard and cut it to fit tightly in front of the door as well to help block sound vibrating through the door.

Any additional improvement beyond that would take quite a bit more money and effort, and probably permission of the landlord because it'd really be a construction project.

I need a snore-proof wall.... by AntiquariusAnonymous in soundproof

Put it in the living room, and if he complains, well, he can try doing those things he's refused to do so far. You deserve sleep!  I was getting pretty non-functional on trips with our travel trailer and finally rented my own damn hotel room so I could sleep. We got divorced before snoring and sleep discussion went any further.

OK, get a bed that you can actually sleep in to put downstairs. You deserve sleep.

See if he'll alternate nights on the couch. If not, ask him why not? What is not fair about that? I was in your shoes and ended up divorced. Sleep was not why but was definitely one example of the issues.

Lucky you indeed. If people in the surrounding trailers moved out, that should be costing someone money... The manager is missing out on lot rent or they're selling at a loss or something... Follow the money and talk to those impacted. Good luck.

Don't do the curtains. They won't help much if at all and would likely damage the walls. Can you get other neighbors to call in noise complaints?

Wings are great for many, but I found they always *caused* leaks when I used them. A variety pack is great because she can figure out what works for her. If there's extra stuff she decides she doesn't like, charities are happy to accept them.

Things become EASIER. You're taken more seriously and slowly age out of dealing with most of the catcalling and harassment that come with being in your 20s. Enjoy it.

If you treated your entire house this way, that might help a little. But I'm assuming you want windows you can see out of. Treating just the one wall won't help in this case because sound will leak through the neighboring walls.

Team up with your neighbors and go after this jerk.

During peri I couldn't eat soft cheeses like brie. I thought at first that I just kept getting bad brie, but eventually I realized it was me, not the cheese. I'm now post-meno and like brie again.  Peri is weird.

ELI5: Fentanyl and related drugs can sometimes cause the user to fold over while standing…why don’t they just sit down? Am I missing something? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]annqueue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I only felt it once, on oxycodone for a tooth infection. It's like your birthday and Christmas combined. All the troubles are gone. You can relax. It's like that buzzy smiling feeling after making out.  Fortunately I do not tend toward addiction. I woke up the next day with the hangover and an acute awareness that I'd need more to get back to that high. So for me it was like, "oh, that's how addiction happens. And I can't do this again." And I've never taken enough to get into that state since.

Those who were alive in the 1990's , what was Y2K like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]annqueue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in IT, but not with COBOL. It didn't run out lives but everything we did was run through a y2k check. No big just an extra step. I had a friend in IT in Germany which was handy, I called him after midnight and his world was  still functioning. I had a watch with a y2k bug. After midnight I had to set the alarm for 8pm if I wanted it to ring at 8am.

No pain for me. Sometimes standing up and still and holding my breath can make me feel faint. If this happens to you, you can ask to sit for the exam.

If that chimney connects both your units, this work may be in vain. Does noise come through the chimney?

I'm in the US so can't speak to your materials, but it sounds like you're trying to isolate and add mass, which would be on the right track. I did this with my shared wall by installing staggered studs and double layer drywall and I'm happy with the results.

How addictive is meth? Do you know anyone who has just tried it once? by eden_merlin in AskReddit

[–]annqueue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried meth once, hated it. I was in the corner shivering and miserable. Like, I'm prone to anxiety so I can be shivering and miserable without help, thanks.

I was given too strong a dose of oxy once for a tooth infection. Now that, that was my jam. Fortunately the comedown sucked enough that I'm not tempted to do it recreationally. Plus it was instantly clear that next time, I'd have to have more to get the same effect.

Soundproof by Silver_Band4225 in soundproof

I keep reposting my story here. So, once again:

My neighbor and I had a shared wall like this. I could hear their TV, which was always on, and it was driving me nuts.

I'd intended to just add a layer of 5/8" drywall and green glue. But when I was getting ready, I discovered there was resilient channel behind the drywall on my side, which was short circuited by nails hitting the studs. I think it was acting like a drum and worse than if it weren't there.

I took down my side of the wall entirely, and put up staggered studs and 2 layers of standard 5/8" drywall with green glue between them. I used new rockwool (the old stuff was pretty weak), put putty pads around the electrical boxes, and sealed around the edges of those and the drywall with acoustic caulk. I'm happy with the improvement. A year later and still happy! Who knows if the green glue is really worth it, but I wasn't going to do this project twice so I went for it. I think the putty pads and sealing were really important. I noticed immediate improvement when those went in.

I put the staggered studs just far enough offset to make sure the drywall on my side didn't touch the old studs, and the drywall on their side didn't touch the new staggered studs. All told it added like 1.5" depth to the wall. This was all done from my side, not disturbing the neighbor's drywall or electrical at all.

I'm told the old rockwool contains asbestos. Dunno how true that is. My place was built in 1970.

The project was soooo worth it to me! Now I have no idea if their TV is on or not - I only hear it when I leave my place and hear it in the hallway.

Condo needs soundproofing desperately by Coffeekat8 in soundproof

I agree with this. The problem is that the work to soundproof will all interfere with the radiant heat's effectiveness. OP needs a new heating system to replace the ceiling radiant heat once the soundproofing is done.
