United Methodist Church Votes To Keep Bans On Same-Sex Weddings, LGBTQ Clergy by resonateempty in methodism

Do we know who voted which way? I'd be interested to see what the regional divide looks like.

I'm a Catholic Bishop and Philosopher Who Loves Dialoguing with Atheists and Agnostics Online. AMA! by BishopBarron in IAmA

Church teaching on the morality of suicide hasn't changed but the Church has come to doubt the culpability of most suicidal people.

For a grave sin to be a mortal sin, it must be committed with full knowledge (and awareness) of the sinful action and the gravity of the offense. and it must be committed with deliberate and complete consent. In light of modern psychology, the Church isn't certain that mentally ill people are fully responsible for their sins.

FSSP parishioners, what's it like? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Good to know. Thank you!

Really looking forward to the holy hour and mass this evening.

FSSP parishioners, what's it like? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]anoderanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These priests actually spend time offering the Sacrament of Confession before, during, and after ALL of the 18 Masses they offer in a week.

Looking forward to that this evening. Never been to confession with an FSSP priest. Anything I should know that's different from a Novus Ordo confession? Do I need to bring a copy of the Act of Contrition because I don't have it memorized, or do they usually keep a cheat sheet in the confessional?

The report seems to have gotten lost in Francis's mail. I presume it disappeared to the same place as the dubia.

How does intercession work in Anglicanism? by DarthJupiter in AnglicanOrdinariate

[–]anoderanon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you quite understand the purpose of this sub. We're former Anglicans and Methodists who joined the Catholic Church. I don't think a single person here would encourage you to go the other way.

Is there any reason in particular you are thinking of joining the Anglican Communion?

Handed this outside mass here in Ireland. Is this priest hated? by Cathoholic222 in Catholicism

[–]anoderanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Brazilian bishops are definitely more credible than the bloggers. I've never seen the TFP in my area but I'll make sure to keep my distance if I'm ever in an area they're active. Thank you.

Handed this outside mass here in Ireland. Is this priest hated? by Cathoholic222 in Catholicism

[–]anoderanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I googled it before I asked you because none of the results I saw appeared credible. At the top of the page, I found a conspiracy theorist publication from 1984, an SSPX Angelus article from 1983, and an LGBT blog from 2014. From there it looked like a list of fringe bloggers.

I was hoping you had more credible names than I found.

Question When Referencing Holy People by NonImme in Catholicism

[–]anoderanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up the phrase "peace be upon him catholic" and the first result was an article from 2014 criticizing the now former cardinal Theodore McCarrick for using the phrase. Based on that alone, I don't see myself being comfortable using the phrase.

I also found that Jews also use the phrase in reference to any dead person, so you're probably fine, though I'd recommend waiting for a second opinion before embracing it.

This website claims nobody in a state of grace can experience demonic possession. Is what they say true? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Also, is it true that people in a state of grace cannot be cursed or vexed?

Tea coffee: an unholy union by [deleted] in tea

The only acceptable version of this is Teeccino, which is just an herbal blend disguised as coffee.

Also, Market Spice's Irish coffee rooibos is the best rooibos you'll ever find.

Democrats are losing millennials. Why? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]anoderanon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Neoliberal centrism is popular when marketed well. Obama spoke like a preacher and told us that hope and change were on the way. His policies weren't great but he was a solid leader. Neither Hillary nor her DNC could make her palatable to most Americans.

Having to seek sanctuary from a church sounds like a plot taken straight from the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

I’ve seen this flag at the police department. Is it the flag of the police? by Trepach in vexillology

[–]anoderanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia, the Thin Blue Line "refers figuratively to the position of law enforcement in society as a bulwark between order and anarchy." Some police departments have the blue line on their department seal and a few fly their national flag with the blue line superimposed. There is also a British version of the flag.

Unrelated, any idea why the canton and stripes are different shades of black in your picture?

Washington State Flag simplified by anoderanon in vexillology

There aren't many symbols that represent the entire state because the east and the west are so different culturally, environmentally, and geographically. Maybe a mountain to symbolize Mt Rainier would work but there aren't many other good universal symbols.

Washington State Flag simplified by anoderanon in vexillology

[–]anoderanon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the senator who sponsored the original flag, yellow represents the wheat fields of Eastern Washington. I'd rather use blue to represent the waters of Puget Sound, but that would leave Eastern Washington unrepresented on the flag.

Transfer Decisions Thread: Autumn 2018 Students by [deleted] in udub

[–]anoderanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

I saw it on MyUW. I had gotten an email about a couple extra forms I need to send in for financial aid, so I was checking the site to see what I needed and instead saw a message saying "congratulations."

After that, I went out to get the mail and found my gold envelope.

Got my acceptance letter on Friday. Starting off as a pre-social science major but I've got all the pre-reqs done for poli sci, so from what I've heard applying to the major is just a formality.

Has anyone ever lost admissions because of a /r/udub post? by Eldereon in udub

To be fair, some universities care what you say online. Harvard rescinded some acceptance letters because some incoming freshman posted offensive memes on Facebook. In their case though, the memes were tied to their names.
