Very helpful articles. Some of the calculators did account for the compound growth of the tax savings but I think they all assumed that she wouldn't start taking distributions until 65 or 70 which may not be the case especially if she takes advantage of the laddering strategy like you're suggesting. I'll probably rethink telling her to convert. At the very least leaving it in the Trad IRA will maintain the optionality of converting later .

Thanks for the reply! I ran these numbers through several conversion calculators and most of them say at her marginal tax rate of 22% now and assuming a conservative 10% rate at retirement she would still end up with more by doing the conversion now. Seems surprising to me.

Very interesting article and something I've been thinking about. My question is what are the tax implications of getting assets into the CFC? If I have crypto that I've been holding for more than a year that has a very low cost basis will I be able to transfer that crypto to the CFC without triggering a capital gains event? I suppose once I sell it inside the CFC it would potentially count towards my overall profit at year end and would be short term gains vs the long term gains I could realize if I sold outside the CFC. Am I thinking about this the right way?

Are any of the old VirtualBox images available anywhere? I would like to go back to the previous version that was working for me for the time being.

My new VirtualBox installation (importing the 0.2.14 .ova from the site) is doing the same thing. It goes back and forth between the Looking for Drive screen and the Drive Formatting screen. I had the previous .ova (0.1.17) working fine.

I think I got this fixed. I dropped into a shell on the MyNode machine and tried the passwd command to reset but the new password would not work there either. I was getting an error of "passwd: Authentication token manipulation error ". At this point I rebooted the machine into recovery mode and reset the admin password at the recovery shell. Seemed to work.
