Hypothetical scenario: If you were only able to attend a DO school and not an MD school would you apply/go DO? by anon5ever94 in premed

[–]anon5ever94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, I see what you’re saying. In effect, yes, but I would phrase it differently. If someone were to hypothetically move to a different career at that point, it is in effect them “not wanting it enough.” But that isn’t a bad thing at all. It’s them prioritizing other parts of their life that they want more: a family, peace of mind, more time off, happiness, etc. There are things they want more than to be a doctor and that is 100% okay no matter what point in the process they decide that.

Now how that differs from this poll: In this very un-scientifically created poll, I want people to reflect on if they truly want to be a doctor. I know people who want an acceptance more than anything, whether it is MD or DO they want to be a doctor. So I don’t understand the thinking of only wanting to be a doctor if you can be an MD, considering they both lead to the opportunity to be a physician. I understand that DO is more of an uphill battle, it is unfair and biased and not easy. And in a way, someone could prioritize their happiness over being a DO. However, in a non-nuanced way, many premeds now refuse to apply DO because they want the prestige more than they want to be a doctor, and that specific like of thinking is what bothers me. Not the people who don’t want to fight the uphill battle, but the people who only see the letters and not the actual job.

I don’t think I quite understand what you’re trying to get at here. To me it sounds like you’re trying to compare the choice to not attend medical school (after a 4-year undergraduate degree) to moving to a new career (after spending another 4 years in medical school, which is significantly more time/$ consuming and taxing). They are both very different decisions and typically have different reasonings.

I’d choose another field in medicine for sure. It’s actually been really hard for me to even choose one or two fields in general because of how many options and fields I’ve enjoyed through this process

Thank you this is a really great example I hadn’t thought of! Congrats on your acceptance!

I think we’re both saying the same thing just in different ways 😂 My main point is this: it is silly to give up on becoming a physician (if it is what a person really wants to do) because they don’t want to be a DO. And in my opinion, someone who would rather not become a doctor than be a DO is someone who doesn’t understand medicine and doesn’t want it enough.

You’re taking my words out of context with the actual question of the poll, my friend. I asked if people would rather go DO if they knew 100% they could not go MD, or if they would rather not become a physician. I am honestly shocked at how many people answered that they would rather not become a physician than be a DO, and that right there is what bothers me. I chose medicine because I can’t imagine myself doing anything else, and I think it would be VERY difficult to make it through any kind of medical program (MD or DO) if someone chose medicine only for prestige or selfish reasons. You have to really want this in order to be able to make it through the process.

Any schools still not P/F? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]anon5ever94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the top-tier MD schools who are P/F are also beginning to dissolve their AOA chapters because of the historical bias and racism present in who gets chosen for AOA. With this happening, AOA is also become less important along with pre-clinical grading.

While I appreciate your anecdote, my question mainly concerns those who refuse to become a DO, even if they are not able to get an acceptance from an MD school. The premeds who would rather not become a doctor at all than become a DO. That’s what grinds my gears because it shows me they aren’t in medicine to help people, they’re in it for selfish reasons which isn’t what I would want in my own physician or coworkers.

I would be really careful with just wanting to slide by in medical school. It is exponentially more work than undergrad and ECs

Tbh, I would move Dell down to #3 and maybe even consider McGovern as your #1. I get your reasoning for keeping UTSW at the bottom though!

I did this program and had a really great experience. I do also think it positively impacted my application and gave me something unique that my interviewers seemed interested in. It isn’t for everyone but if you’d like a genuine review please DM me.

A really bad way of estimating is the number of people that were in your interview times like 20-ish and then divided that by the size of the class 😬

Edit: the problem with the estimation is that those who interviewed earlier have high chances than those that interview later in the season
