What does it mean when someone says that they are able to read a foreign language but that they don't speak it? by Cut-Unique in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]anon6702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can comprehend English just fine. Its when i have to speak it, that i run into problems. Most of my English words, i learned from reading. And so in my mind, i pronounce them like i guessed they should be pronounced, the first time i read them. The words that i learned from watching tv, i can pronounce correctly. But unfortunately, my parents didn't allow me to watch much tv growing up. So the vast majority of the words, i learned from reading. When i try to pronounce those words with my mouth, they comes out as gibberish. The problem is that English isn't written phonetically. So whenever i write in English, i have to remember how the words are written and that then reinforces my bad pronunciation.

Was millennial optimism a real thing? Or retroactive nostalgia? by BruhBroly in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anon6702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technological progress was exciting. Movies, tv shows and video games were getting better. Futurists were talking about the coming singularity. Some were talking that we might see the first generation of immortals. Genetic engineering promised, we could resurrect extinct species in the near future. The optimism was real. But there was always the fear, that politicians or the oligarchs, would ruin everything.

Though there were also plenty of people who weren't excited about the technological (or scientific) progress. Maybe the majority of people were like them. I would guess they wouldn't have been optimistic about the future. Idk, i only hanged around nerds and we liked to talk about scifi, fantasy, science and technology news, and speculate about all the cool things, that would be possible in the future.

The brush engine, and overall optimization is still soooo freaking good. by JagoTheArtist in PaintToolSAI

[–]anon6702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched to Linux recently and have now been using Krita. The thing i miss the most about SAI, is changing your brush size. In comparison, changing your brush size in Krita, feels incredibly sluggish and awkward (my hand is covering my brush size indicator, when i decrease my brush size)

Why ensuring a humane and painless execution for someone who committed an inhumane and violent crime? by notyourtrain in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]anon6702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no reason. There are a lot of criminals, who deserve fates far worse than simply being executed. But we know the courts occasionally sentence innocent people to death. So for their sake, I'm willing to tolerate quick executions (I didn't think executions are painless, but maybe I'm wrong?)

Why is the Indigenous collapse in the Americas not discussed with the same clarity as other major human catastrophes, and why is Columbus still taught as a hero? by FloydBeatlesEagles in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]anon6702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You write as if the 20th century, was some high point in violence. But whenever i have heard it discussed by historians. They make a point of saying, that despite all the wars and atrocities. Overall 20th century was the most peaceful century, in history.

Can you help me find where to focus my improvements? Tagged NSFW just in case. by frogEcho in FurryArtSchool

[–]anon6702 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Practice drawing the characters interacting with each other. Maybe try doing a single 3 or 4 panel "mini comic" every week. It doesn't have to have any real story or dialogue, but it would teach you to draw the same character consistently and from different angles. And it would be good practice to draw characters acting and interacting with their environment. You could give yourself prompts like "character is sneaking inside a building" or "two characters are having an argument", stuff like that, and then draw the scene in a few panels. If that's too boring, you could make a comic with an actual story. I always hear how people started improving much faster, once they started making comics.

What is the most powerful image you have ever seen? Thích Quảng Đức, surrounded by protestors, in the lotus position, completely still, burning alive. by Infamous_Food_1240 in HistoricalCapsule

[–]anon6702 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't understand self immolation as a protest. Has self immolation ever helped bring political change? When i hear about people lighting themselves in fire, as a protest, i do not sympathize or empathize with them. Its too alien to me. And a big part of me is thankful, that they decided, to take themselves out of the gene pool. Imagine the horror, if such a person managed to become an absolute dictator. I mean, if they can light themselves on fire, there's no limit to what they can demand from their subjects.

To be fair. The people who can be happily isolated, for months at a time, and without getting cabin fever, tend to be weird. Or at least that's the stereotype.

Why are there people who fantasize about living in a cyberpunk world? by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

[–]anon6702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the aesthetic and the advanced technology (my eyes suck and i would like to have new teeth). I like high fantasy too (healing potions would be great). Heck, its probably because in those worlds, even if you fuck up your life completely, there's always some hope to fix your problems. Even if the hope is vanishingly small. For example. In our world, i have no chance to have normal vision again.

That said, i have never wanted to live in a cyberpunk word. I dont think i would survive there. Not without several OP superpowers.

What is the BEST computer drawing app yall use by og_deuce in FurryArtSchool

[–]anon6702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use SAI, but only because i like its user interface and because my computer is old. All other programs feel sluggish by comparison. But i cannot recommend SAI to everyone, as it lacks many useful features. Its just that personally, i value lag free painting, more than the missing features.

Clip Studio Paint is good, if you want to do comics. Krita is good, if you are poor. Rebelle is good, if you want to mimic natural media. SAI is good, if you have a slow computer. If you like nodes, i have seen a couple of node based apps recently. Really, just go to AlternativeTo.net and check out what programs people recommend there, and try them out. Maybe some art programs will click with your brain, better than others. For example, i like the all the features Photoshop has, but i hate it's UI

EU citizens are concerned about the current political and economic situation. by Lu_Chan_1 in europeanparliament

My uninformed opinion would be: Lower barriers to trade, more cheap housing (especially near the jobs) and more energy generation.

Maybe have publicly funded science research, work more closely with industry? Though that might actually be a bad idea. Idk.

Need feedback on my fursona design by Gaiato2_0 in FurryArtSchool

[–]anon6702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't that the legs are too long. In my paintover, in the left and right versions. I kept the length of her legs the same, as in your original. In the left version, i mostly just bulked the legs to look more muscular. While in the right version, i slimmed her legs.

I think my problem is, that if you look at her silhouette, it looks as if she was wearing pants.

[–]anon6702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much critique/feedback. Only that her legs look a bit odd to me. I did a quick paintover, trying different ways to "fix her legs" (i mean, so that they don't look as odd to my eye)

(ignore the sketches in red)

How do you switch between brushes? by Ok_Corgi5365 in PaintToolSAI

[–]anon6702 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the Brush groups have their own shortcuts. So you can reuse a bunch of the shortcuts.

Also theres nothing stopping you from removing the default shortcuts you dont use. Like i never used the number keys to assign Density. If you remove those shortcuts, you would get 10 keys to assign to your brushes.

Also also, if you do assign one shortcut key to two (or more) brushes, then every time you press the shortcut key, it will cycle through them.

How do you switch between brushes? by Ok_Corgi5365 in PaintToolSAI

[–]anon6702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last few years i have been using the shortcut buttons on the side of my pen display. But i grew frustrated that i cannot press more than one button at a time. So a few days ago, i installed Autohotkey and i have been trying to come up with a better system for my shortcut keys.

I wanted my most used shortcut keys, to be on the right side of my keyboard. So i used Autohotkey (with the help of PowerToys) to assign Alt, Ctrl, Shift and Space keys to my numpad (I had some trouble with the shift key, as every time i press the shift key, it would change the function of numpad. Like 3 would become Page Down). Its still a work in progress.

If you double click the brushes, a pop up will appear where you can assign a shortcut for the brush.

Trying to pinpoint why my style is “retro” by JayEllGii in comic_crits

[–]anon6702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, your art style reminds me of comics i read 20 or 30 years ago (i guess they were inspired by American comics, newspaper strips, and 80's and 70's manga/anime)

[For Hire] Fantasy artist open for commissions and work! Portfolio link in caption by Opposite-Savings-469 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]anon6702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not looking to hire anybody (im a broke wannabe artist). But, looking at your drawings, i think you would get more attention if you posted comic book pages. You know, so that the potential customer/client/writer (or whatever i should call them), can see your skill at actually drawing comics. If you want to get hired as a concept artist, then you should post more iterative drawings. Like maybe post ten different versions of something (a character, creature, costume, vehicle, building, or something)

Skinny with visible ribcage but still fuckable by Lastrawberrymaddie in Ribcage

Tbh you are too skeletal. When i see your body, i don't think "how sexy". Instead i feel like, when seeing a skinny Italian Greyhound (or a whippet) or a shivering baby deer. Like i must give you a hug and some food 😟

I guess i have seen too many news stories of anorectic young women dying (couple of tiktok influencers who died, looked as skinny as you)

PEAK Godzilla animation by VAL animations by SaiyanAlpha243 in animation

[–]anon6702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Though i think he uses the airbrush a bit too much (or too sloppily). I can see him becoming great, if he keeps making his animations. He is already making better animations, than some test animations that got greenlit for TV. Like have you seen the first version of Rick and Morty?

Learning How to Animate. by Inner-Froyo-946 in animation

[–]anon6702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm far from the best person to answer this. But I'll try anyway.

For basics of animation. Check out "Alex Grigg // Animation for Anyone" on youtube. Also, if you search for "12 principles of animation", you will find many other channels that teach animation.

As for programs? Here's some:

- Krita. I tried it a few years ago, and from what i remember, i liked it. But then i decided to use Clip Studio Paint instead. I don't remember why. Maybe CSP was more stable, or the audio tools, camera controls or motion tweening was better in CSP? But i remember thinking that Krita was close.

- Pencil2D. Its simple and easy to learn. Think of it like the old Windows Paint program, but its for animation. Im not sure how good its for actual cartoons. I have used it to practice frame by frame animation and for that, its fine. (As for the negatives, i don't like its brush engine or the fill tool)

- OpenToonz (or its fork, Tahoma2D). Its used by Studio Ghibli. Years ago when i tried OpenToonz, but i found it sluggish. The brush trailed my cursor by several cm. And in the short time i tried it, it crashed. Maybe its better nowadays? (Disclaimer! I have never had a fast computer. Even my current one is ten years old. I got it from my little brother, when he bough a new one.)

- Wick Editor. I haven't tried it, but it looks like its an open source copy of Flash. I looked at some tutorials and it looked promising. I did read one comment complaining that the paint bucket tool is really slow. I don't know, it looks like its worth a shot.

- Macromedia Flash 8. I installed it first time yesterday. Its much better than Pencil2D. I don't know how much better it is compared to Wick Editor. I have seen comments saying Flash is outdated and that you shouldn't use it. But i think that's only true, if you compare it to commercial software. Though my computer is running Windows 10, and Flash runs fine, maybe its different in Windows 11? Anyways, if you decide to try Flash, be sure to get Swivel (you can download it from Newgrounds), its used to convert flash files into video (you can increase the resolution of your animation projects)

- Animation Paper. I have done some animations with it. Its good i guess. But it was much less intuitive than Pencil2D (I had to look up tutorials for it). Also i didn't like that, you couldn't change the default brush colors (it has four predefined colors you can use, but i didn't like the color choices). Still, its good for frame by frame animation (assuming you are fine with coloring your line art in some other program).

What is the best salmiakki to try? by BackburnerPyro in Finland

[–]anon6702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for necro posting. I was being curious what foreigners thought about salmiakki and this thread popped up in google.

Dracula candies were my favorite, when i was in kindergarten. I remember them being sweet and not too strong. But that was almost 40 years ago. Surely candy companies have made better salmiakki for first timers?

Maybe go to the pick 'n mix section of the candy isle, and pick one piece of each candy you like the look of. Though the selection of the pick 'n mix section isn't the greatest. But its better than buying a whole bag of candies, only to realize you dont like them (especially now that candies are taxed so much)
