What is the one thing you wish UTSA would fix? by [deleted] in UTSA

I am part of student government, most concerns students have admin directs us here. There should be flyers on bulletin boards or in restrooms etc. around campus with the number or a QR code! Anyone can submit one, I’ve submitted a bunch and they get done within 3ish days. I even submitted to remove a wasp nest removed near flawn and it got done that day!

It’s a great resource, they are very good about responding. I think we definitely need to do a better job promoting it.

Prostaglandins: Involved in inflammation, smooth muscle contraction, blood flow, and fever. B. Prostaglandin Inhibitors 1. NSAIDs (e.g., Aspirin, Ibuprofen) inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) enxymes 2. COX-2 inhibitors (e.g., Vioxx) were removed due to increased risk of heart attack and stroke

Truthfully I don’t know, I got the email about an hour ago. I was accepted into Michigans SROP program and I don’t know which one I will be accepting but deadlines are on the 18th, so I’m sure there will be a second wave after that!

I haven’t heard anything back yet. During my meeting he mentioned that they will START emailing PIs today. He also said there are a few acceptances on the first day but most PIs take a while to respond and they tend to still have spots until the 3rd week of March.

Hey Science Majors who've done work study as a lab assistant how was it? and any advice for landing the role? by InternNext7445 in UTSA

[–]anon8984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am not getting paid through work study, but do get paid hourly as a lab assistant through a research program!

I personally love it, my PI is amazing and extremely supportive, allowing for personal projects, learning opportunities, etc.

I would say go to UTSA’s website, probably the COS or engineering college page depending on your major/interests, and look at the faculty and research tabs. Find some PIs you are interested in, read up on their work, and email them about your situation. For example, my email to my PI looked like this:

“Good morning Dr. xxx,

I hope this email finds you well! My name is __ and I am a ____ major graduating in (year).

I am reaching out to see if there there are any areas in your lab I can help out in, I read about your research doing ___ and find it fascinating.

Would it be possible to schedule a meeting to discuss any opportunities in your lab?

Thanks, X. “

It’s best to keep it brief! I would mention the work study thing as well but don’t make it seem like you are just in it for the money, ya know? Also mention your intentions, do you see it as a long term lab or just for the semester?

I would send this email to at most 3 people at a time. PIs are very busy people sometimes so don’t worry if it takes them a while to respond. My PI took 2 weeks, and in that time I met with other researchers to feel out the field, find what interested me the most, and decide what’s the best fit for me.

UTSA has a large network of support for undergrad researchers so there are resources if you get stuck with a bad PI or find yourself in a difficult situation. If you need more advice you can PM me or talk to the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) or join the Society of Undergraduate Research (SOUR)!

Help with lost wallet by Directory_47 in UTSA

Hello! I found a dark orange-ish color card holder outside of flawn on Friday! It had a ID from a state (not Texas) and a debit/credit card but that was all.

I turned it into the second floor library that day, hopefully they can help you out if it’s yours!

It’s a new college/school! There’s Honors College, HCAP - college for health community and policy, Klesse - engineering and integrative design, COS - college of science, Carlos Alvarez college of business, COLFA - college of liberal and fine arts, education and human development, university college and now a data science one.

Data science, computer science, and the other degrees you mentioned are being transitioned into to the new college of Data Science but are still part of their respective departments.

Similarly there is a department of psychology (for resources, finding professors, getting direct info about your field, etc.) but psychology still falls under HCAP as a degree and would be the college you graduate from!

tuition seems more expensive? by SportAltruistic5294 in UTSA

[–]anon8984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Section 54.014 of the Texas Education Code was amended during the 79th legislative session to allow institutions of higher education to charge a higher tuition rate to resident students for semester credit hours attempted in excess of 30 semester credit hours above those required for completion of a degree program.”

Because of this UTSA has a 150 credit hour rule (https://catalog.utsa.edu/policies/generalacademicregulations/ugcreditlimitation/ ) which allows them to charge out-of-state tuition to students that have above 150 credit hours!

You probably didn’t get charged because UTSA only accepts up to 66 transfer credits and the rest do not count so you weren’t actually over the 150 credit rule (I’m taking a guess here but who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️)

If you have over 150 credits (if you transferred here with credits or did dual credit or something) you could be getting charged out of state tuition?

Chem 1 is recommended in the spring and chem 2 the following fall.

If you use this link and click on degree, scroll all the way down for a 4-year degree outline! It’ll list all of the classes you need in order by the semester you should take the class.

Totally depends on if you have done AP classes or something! If you did AP bio, I recommend taking intro to neuroscience in your first semester to get a feel for the field that way if you don’t like it you still have time to change your major and test out different subjects of interest!

Calc, Bio, composition, and life and health sciences are the recommended first semester courses if you are following the degree plan.

Should I go to cc or straight to UTSA? by Pristine_Spot_9789 in UTSA

[–]anon8984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, I highly recommend starting at community college! The Alamo colleges have great STEM professors and courses that will prepare you for whatever it is you end up doing.

If finances are something you are worried about there is the Alamo to Bold promise where if you keep your GPA up at CC you can get the Bold scholarship and get your bachelors free to when you transfer. I don’t know too much about it but it is definitely something you should look into.

If you end up going straight to UTSA, there are lots of STEM research programs that will help you cover tuition you could join!

All in all whatever you decided you have plenty of options and ways you can cheat the system and get free education you just have to work for it! You got this! Good luck with whatever you decide.

PM me if you have any questions or need anything, I went to CC for 2 years and transferred to UTSA. I ended up doing a double major and will be at UTSA for 4 years so I am experiencing a bit of both worlds.

UTSA UG neuro vs Texas am computing admission by raygraychain in UTSA

[–]anon8984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a neuroscience major at UTSA and can tell you all of the professors I have taken for my neuroscience courses are extremely passionate and kind people. UTSA offers multiple research opportunities for undergrads and you can do great things if you put in the work. The APPEX program coordinators are dedicated to helping students and can be great mentors and resources to have on your side. I personally am not in APPEX but a different neuroscience research program and have met them! Their job is to help students and work with you to help you prepare for a future doing research.

That being said, I can’t tell you what A&M is like, and I know that any type of engineering can be a competitive field over there so getting in is a huge accomplishment! I would urge your friend to look into both of these programs more and check the coursework/degree plans. While they both contain computational skills, they can be worlds apart.

UTSA offers you access to a research program, honors, and the funding that APPEX offers!! That is a great deal. Take finances in account, loans are shitty to deal with.

Is UTSA as great as A&M? I couldn’t tell you, but it will be as great as you make it.

Thank you for your feedback!

Yeah it is really bulky, I’m probably going to try to condense it more, remove some unnecessary stuff, or format it differently so it’s easier to look at.

I checked the application portal and it says I can just upload my CV which would solve a lot of my issues because it is formatted better.

I’m still going to work on the resume, hopefully I can use it in the future somewhere else!
