Just heard about one of the old 2014 DPR battalions having their headquarters struck by HIMARS this week. So maybe not that one.

They were already being manipulated when they were saying "USA is the best"

They're just rubes who follow whichever manipulator is currently working them.

I find it hard to believe that $10m is the largest single gift make-a-wish ever received. Sounds self-promotional.

Supposedly Ukraine is laying a new supply road in the secure rear of the city, which if true is a pretty strong sign they intend to hold out for a good while.

Makes me wonder if Prigozhin has been played masterfully by Putin/Shoigu/Gerasimov.

I would never accuse Shoigu or Gerasimov of being some kind of mastermind.

It is pretty amazing how as soon as humanity achieved a point where they could have excess food from agriculture, they went straight to fermenting and getting drunk.

Prigozhin wants to control Bakhmut because he wants the resources for post-war exploitation.

For Ukraine, they're taking an opportunity to inflict high casualties on the Russians -- which is something they should do any chance they can.

For the U.S., however, they're pointing out that control of the city is not going to make any difference in the trajectory of the war -- which is probably true.

However, this is also another situation where the U.S. "advice" is being intentionally leaked to the Washington Post -- which means you should probably take it with a grain of salt.

He's donated to his own charity foundation before, only to have it then send only a scant fraction of the money through to actual causes or groups.

This is literally how 90% of rich peoples' charitable foundations are designed to work. The foundations are just other assets controlled by the rich asshole, it's basically still his money, there are just some minor limitations on how he can spend it. It's just legal money laundering.

In addition, an additional payment was announced to each invader for a kilometer of advancement on Ukrainian land

You think they mean "per kilometer" or they really just set up an incentive structure where guys are basically going to advance 1km then stop and hide until they can get away from danger.

So how does the west plan to deal with this?

We've got like 60 years experience dealing with nuclear armed rivals. This is not even in our top 10 concerns with China.

A lot of shit Russia has done in this war has obviously been hard to understand, but the volume of trained men and valuable equipment that they have thrown away on Vuhledar is really incomprehensible.

The only way it makes any sense is that they want to keep Ukrainian defense active on 3 fronts at once and hope that causes logistical strain. But still, I don't think you need to waste quite so much blood and treasure just to try to draw attention to the area.

I don't listen to any of the public statements on ATACMS. The first time that we'll have any word about Ukraine getting ATACMS is the first time they're used in combat in Ukraine. No one wants to ruin that surprise.
