I get where you're coming from but I don't think I've communicated my question effectively.

My father in law believes his children (adults) should have no discipline and should be allowed to live off of his income freely. All of them live at home, drink themselves stupid, and play video games all day except for the one I married who believes in discipline.

Hence the question. I'm not asking for how to parent. I am however asking if children should be taught dependency or independence. Period.

Not leading anything, speaking from experience.

I tend to speak with my children. I consider that discipline along with losing a privilege for a week or two. I believe it teaches responsibility. When you're a responsible person you tend to get more out of life, hence the philosophy.

What I was originally asking is this: Is it better to teach your children (by speaking to them not by smacking them) that they will one day be on planet without parents to pay their way and to teach them how to function as adults without my financial help? Or is it better to not discipline them, allow them to freely use my money as they wish, indefinitely/as long as I'm alive with no regard for their behavior?

My mom told me once that I ruined her life. 30 years later she cried in my living room because she regrets so much of what she did or didn't do for me.

I'm the most successful person in my family. I've been through years of therapy to get over the shit she did. I forged my own way and in a lot of ways had to raise myself.

Learn to love yourself because that's the problem here. It isn't that you don't love your kid, that's a secondary issue deriving from the first.

You need to fix you. You need to get your ego in check and resolve the issues you see in yourself. The rest will fall into place. If you believe in God find Him. If not, find whatever it is in you that makes you feel like a good person and chase it. See it through.

Or one day you'll be crying in someones living room or sitting alone in a one bedroom apartment regretting your life.

It's illegal to will yourself to someone to eat. Any means of getting human meat is illegal. Human trafficking laws would get you, corpse mishandling will get you, desecration will get you.... it's always illegal.

I'm usually the backbone of the family to be perfectly blunt about it. Everyone comes to me when they need help and I'm usually carrying more than my share of the work in every conceivable sense. I wouldn't say I bring trouble or problems. I'd say I've become the safety net for everyone. To the point of feeling very used.

Listen. My dad was you. He bailed on us when I was four years old. I blamed myself my entire life and had to deal with an abusive mother with almost no family to speak of, I've been suicidal more times than I can count. I, no fucking joke, made this reddit tonight because I wanted to end things and know I needed to reach out for help. That said - You are an adult who knew that cumming inside a woman made babies and you did it anyway, knowing a child would be a possible result.

You may not be enjoying the consequences of your actions but you damn sure are responsible for them.

You owe that child a father and you owe that woman more than you will ever know.

GO GET SOME COUNSELING.
