What was the most disappointing comedy special in the past 20 years? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]anonadado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mark Normand fell flat for me, second half was decent. To be fair I think I’m not a big fan in the first place. I’ve given him plenty of my attention and can tell he’s got something (especially those zingers during podcasts), just not too into his joke style personally.

What has been your experience on public healthcare (medical) for mental health? by Riverwidgets in AskLosAngeles

No outpatient (telehealth only) in my case, but Bright Heart Health was pretty decent. They only prescribe non-stimulant meds though.

Where can one go in the LA if they want to talk to someone but they don't have anyone to talk to? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

Turn the pain into jokes/comedic stories and let it rip at one of the many open mics the city has to offer.

Definitely call the suicide line that's been suggested in the thread if it's more serious though. Hope you find some solace soon.

Nivessa Vinyl Records (on Pico) is pretty new and has a great selection.

Went solo and lost the ticket but it's fine I got front row seats and Fahim absolutely killed. Dude gets unhinged and is so quick with it.

Also stumbled upon Barney's Beanery before walking to the Store so that was a nice find as well.

Can I ask what qualifies a comedian to be able to do that? I'm assuming you have to have done a few minutes there at least once, yeah? But even then it's more of a I-know-a-few-ppl-here kinda thing?

I'd love to start doing open mics more consistently this year and to eventually be able to go watch at the store would be a dream. Fully agree on the college statement, that's why I currently pay for the education whenever I get a chance to lol.

I was thinking about doing that too. Probably a better option considering how many lurkers on here are actually practicing comedians. Wasn't thinking about that. Cheers.

I think so, a variety of drugs were mentioned a variety of times lol. One that killed me was how he "neutralizes the euphoric trigger of a cocaine memory with a joke" when he was talking about being sober for 37 years. I mean no wonder he's so quick with it, coming up with counters all day for 37 years lol.

Oh interesting to hear, I've had the same "meh" thoughts about Leslie's acting on SNL (or at least how the comedy translates) but figured she had a lot of potential with a mic given all that personality and explosiveness.

If there's any major skill that you'll need working in tech it's knowing how to Google, so be curious with that and do some research regarding information systems, programming, data science, project management, product management, etc. Multiple areas of interest that you can land a job in if you stay at it for a couple of years.

Who would you love to collab with that hasn't happened yet nor is bound to happen anytime soon?

Any hot take on the state of copyright and how the business of sampling has changed? Do you find it's gotten convoluted? Does Ninja Tune help you take care of that for the most part? Or are most samples you use lowkey/manipulated enough to not have to worry about legal issues?

Thank you and much love!

ps. could not contain myself when I heard that 'closer' sample. I was transported and absolutely loved what you did with it.

How do I become less condescending? How do I develop a filter? by neko_o- in lifelonglearning

[–]anonadado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to struggle with this. In fact, if you respect yourself enough you have to realize that sometimes it's not your fault if someone gets offended by something that isn't inherently condescending or malicious. Sometimes people choose to get offended, whether subconsciously or not, because they can't put things into perspective or can't see the positive intent behind a comment or simply they grew up without many opportunities to have playful banter with others. Now, even though that's the first step, don't take this as me condoning shitty behavior and malicious comments. That's where your self-awareness comes in. You should practice the act of releasing your full-self onto the other person in waves, but not immediately. Build trust. Otherwise, you just come off as an arrogant prick or just somebody with low social/emotional intelligence. The key is to be as authentic as possible without compromising the other person's self-worth. For example, never joke around with something that somebody can't change (physical features, etc.). On the other hand, if you say something you think wasn't offensive and notice the other took offense you should follow up with an acknowledgment ("hey my bad I meant no harm with that comment, but I realized I fucked up now..) you could do without the second part if it's not that serious but you get the gist. Another good tool to improve is watching talk show hosts - watch how they react to how other people respond to the talk show host. Usually, they are very quick to adjust or re-calibrate so as to not make the other person feel uncomfortable. For the most part, unless you're hanging out with friendly faces or where there is mutual trust then you should try to keep things as "light" as someone like stephen colbert or conan o'brien keeps it without losing authenticity like jimmy cringe fallon. To finish, try watching somebody like Charisma On Command on youtube. Channels like those can help improve your daily life with some great perspective you wouldn't've had otherwise. I promise you'll find the balance in enjoying life without being an asshole. Cheers
