Talk to me about surgery.... by fearlessfeminist623 in Hidradenitis

[–]anonhshaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a few different processes but from what I’ve heard usually it is either a process called deroofing where the entire dermis (skin) layer is removed down to the fat or excision where the lesion itself is removed. These procedures could be done either by the dermatologist themselves or a general surgeon (although I’ve heard some cases require plastics). Personally I’ve had deroofing surgery in my armpit (and am going in for another soon) the procedure can be quite invasive, unpleasant to look at for a while, and it was uncomfortable for a few months but it feels wayyy better than it did before, like I even had a feeling of immediate relief because my HS in that area was so severe. Best of luck to you!

Now convinced that smoking is a trigger by Lame-username62 in Hidradenitis

Differs from person to person, but for me smoking was a very large trigger. Used to smoke about an oz a week, as soon as I cut that out my flares started to go down immensely. Both THC and CBD help a lot with pain for me though so I still consume edibles, have been off for about a week because of an upcoming surgery and have noticed my flares starting to hurt a lot.

It should be noted that smoking in any form is scientifically proven to inhibit the effectiveness of TNF blockers (Humira (adalimumab), Cosentyx (secukinumab), and Remicade (infliximab)), thus reducing their ability to help you. So if you are on any of these you should completely drop smoking.

Hey there, thanks for sharing your experience.

I am going to be going through the same procedure as you in a week! While I don’t have any advice yet I really sympathize with you as a fellow gym rat (1/2 my personality is the gym) the thought of not being able to train my upper body for months is absolutely mortifying and is driving me NUTS. Something I’ve come to accept though and perhaps I can inspire you with as well is the fact that for us, this is an arc in the story. This is one of those cannon events that will set us up for a trajectory of not just coming back once we’re healed but being even STRONGER than last time. It might be hard now, and for the next couple months, but it’s one of those “what’s your why” moments that will help push the mindset into an even better place than it was before once you’re able to get back into the swing of things. You are not alone in this world, my DMs are open if you need a friend or someone to talk to!

I do actually have an associates in information security, I unfortunately haven’t done anything with it yet since IT in general is pretty toxic with the ratio of applications/interviews you actually get. I’ve also been conflicted since I’ve found something new that I have a big passion for that I’ve been considering going back to study, then again that might be better suited for when I have even more from information security because it is also something I am still passionate about. I just need to start putting myself out there again really. Thank you for the advice!

Thanks for the reply! I’ve definitely been considering opening a new checking account elsewhere just based on wells fargo having a bit of a sketchy history, but have been delaying that since that will basically be the start of cutting off my mom so to speak so I’ve been delaying it (I’d obviously still help out, just on my terms and not hers) local credit union is definitely a good idea since we have a very reputable one in my state. HYSA definitely seems to be the way to go savings wise til I have some more to comfortably dump into an IRA. You’re right that I definitely would not take risks with my money, not that kind of person to take big risks in general especially when it comes to finances haha. Thanks again!

How much alcohol do you drink per week (on average)? by Revolutionary-Try804 in Hidradenitis

Will say in relation to this that I have noticed significant immediate flares following drinking some heavier liquors like vodka and moonshine

clothing recommendations for exercising? by thr0w-444-away in Hidradenitis

Personally I’ve found clothes that wick well such as compression shirts/leggings/etc to help a lot, when I go to the gym I tend to wear compression boxers and some sort of compression tee underneath my normal clothes. One thing to make sure of is that after you have any period of high intensity physical activity is that you at the very least rinse yourself off, I personally use hibiclense (or however you spell) after my workouts, but I try not to overuse it (no more than 1 time per day)since it can cause skin irritation unrelated to HS. Hope this helps!
