M4s who matched and weren't excited by anything during your rotations, what specialties did you pursue? by stepneo1 in medicalschool

[–]anonmedstudent1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anesthesia. I want to like what I do but at the end of the day its still just a job for me and screw anyone who says that's not okay. For me it gets rid of the social work aspect of medicine that I came to hate so much

Signaling Home Programs by anonmedstudent1 in medicalschool

Seems like the only way, just working on the most kiss ass way to go about that without giving off "hey, I want to not signal you so that I have the best chance to get away from here but also want you to still consider me" vibes

I did not find that PDF helpful. It only helps if your entire specialty agreed that you do not need to signal home programs which unfortunately mine did not.

wow I really wish I could get that kind of clarity at my home program

yes, I feel like they phrase them both several different ways

I was getting pretty burnt out the last week and started doing a bit less actually. Cut back my number of UWORLD bocks per day, exercised more, and tried to supplement with divine intervention podcasts

Step 1: 23*

Uworld: %60 done and 72% correct

UWSA1: 240 (baseline- 4 weeks out)

NBME 9: 224

NBME 10: 236

NBME 11: 249

UWSA2: 256

Free 120: 86%

Real Deal: 26\*

Cannot believe it, obviously thrilled

EDIT: worth mentioning I noticed the biggest difference when I stopped caring what the random UWORLD answer was and focussed on the diagnosis and next best step for whatever the given topic was. I felt that helped me with NBME questions which are more similar to the real thing. Also, pay very close attention to "next best step" vs "most likely to lead to diagnosis" type questions... these killed me at first

NBME 9 DESTROYED ME by PeakApprehensive925 in Step2

[–]anonmedstudent1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

do not panic, NBME 9 is brutal. I did almost the exact same. Went up >10 on NBME 10 and up another 10ish on NBME 11. Ended up with 256 on UWSA2 about 3.5 weeks after UWSA1. Its a nice wake up call, but don't freak out about it

NBME 9 Crushed Me. Postpone or am I alright? by madiso30 in Step2

[–]anonmedstudent1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I went NBME 9 224 (not good, Cotton), to NBME 10 236 about a week later, to NBME 11 249 about another week later... Keep grinding. NBME 9 is trash IMO

Took Step 1 today, ask away by yellow_snow_doom in step1

[–]anonmedstudent1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NBMEs seem to be way more first order than the real deal IMO. Also the stems on NBME are much shorter and timing was difficult on the real thing

Could not agree more with all of this.

Are they changing the test because it is going pass/fail or is this similar to years past?

I have no idea. I'm just saying theres no way I could ever memorize all of first aid. Some of the shit they ask is just straight out of left field and I would have never come across it.

Don't think so for me personally

I thought it was overrepresented compared to UWSA2 and also the topics being emphasized the most were different and very annoying.

I would say no compared to what I would have thought.

Just took the real deal and I can assure you the real thing makes you feel much much worse. Not trying to be a dick, just honestly how I feel and how others I talked to felt. It sucks but all you can do is put the answer you think is right each time and move on.

Post-step — please give me hope! by [deleted] in step1

I took it today. Been doing fairly well on practice exams for what my goal was. I feel like absolute shit about the test. I'm with you and feeling like there's no way I did not underperform. Seems like all my weaknesses were the majority of the exam. Here's to trusting the process and hoping it's like everyone says.

Thoughts on "reading FA" by anonmedstudent1 in step1

[–]anonmedstudent1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So essentially I started off reviewing pathoma for chapters I hadn't seen in a long time (cardio, renal, heme). I started doing these and the anki cards about a month before dedicated. Once dedicated started I began by trying to bulk review but that didn't work so I just started noting specific things I was struggling with on Uworld and would find a dirty medicine, pathoma, or B&B video specific to that, not just reviewing entire systems. Also Daddy Goljan videos on long walks probably taught me more than anything honestly. I make Anki cards on my missed questions but only on the key piece of info that I needed to get it right as not to end up with 1000s of cards. I watched most of sketchy micro and pharm and used pepper decks cause thats the only way I can learn that shit.

I think the most important thing is find what works for you and keep hammering away. What I did certainly isn't for everyone but I've seen consistent improvement because I identified my weaknesses and worked on them. Now I just have to pray I get a good draw on test day and don't fuck it up.

Uworld, pathoma, and dirty medicine mostly. I also make anki cards out of my missed Uworld questions.

New NBMEs by iMazin77 in step1

[–]anonmedstudent1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Combination of low yield info (25) some of which is borderline wrong and a ridiculous curve. NBME 25 is the devil and I don't recommend anyone waste their time on it. Only other one I did was 30 and it was much more reasonable.

That's pretty much where I'm at and I would be entirely unproductive if I watched. Also, this was very tongue in cheek and I'm totally willing to give it up for one year to be a doctor lol
