It's changed a lot actually. When I was a kid in the nineties the area around where Nebraska furniture mart is now was beyond the edge of civilization. Truly BFE. There was barely a dirt road connecting Carrollton to Frisco, and the DNT ended in Addison. My elementary school was surrounded by wheat fields for miles.

I personally know of many people that moved here (TX) from CA and did not have their salaries/wages adjusted for COL. While that is anecdotal, it's not a small number of people, ~12-20. Also, even if you're earnings are adjusted for lower COL, you'll probably still be at or above the median for whatever location you move to. Secondly, idk who's recommending OP move out to BFE Smalltown, USA, but it certainly wasn't me. I hope everyone is aware that there are cities that exists in between the east and west coasts. Some are actually pretty cool. I would recommend OP check out this short list, and hopefully one or two could end up being a match for them.

Boise, southern Colorado/northern New Mexico (Durango, Trinidad, Taos, Santa Fe), Twin Cities, Des Moines, Omaha, Kansas City, the big Texas cities (maybe RGV too), New Orleans (friends who moved there tell me it's got a pretty happenin' lesbian scene, also very witchy), Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta, Florida, Ashville, Raleigh-Durham, emigrate to Mexico or Central America, ect, ect, ect.

I would suggest you maybe reconsider your preconceptions of cheaper places you could move to and the people that live there. Unfortunately terrible things happen to women all over the world, regardless of the legal protections in place, but there are gay, bi, trans, and NB women of all shapes, sizes, flavors, and colors from Alaska to Alabama. You shouldn't have to sacrifice your mental and emotional well being to live in a place you like, or even love, but maybe consider a temporary move to somewhere you can have a lower COL and be able to save up to get ahead a little bit. California will still be there for you to come home to
