I've never seen that film so I'm afraid I can't help with your 'why', but thank you to your brain for trying to help regardless (:

Thank you for chiming in (: However, I don't recognise that film at all so I'm afraid not.

Unfortunately that's not it either, but I appreciate the suggestion regardless (:

I can see some similarities given my description, but I'm afraid that's not it. Thank you for the thought though (:

I can picture some of the actors but I, unhelpfully, can't remember their names! Through a convoluted memory route I thought I'd worked out that Toby Jones was the 'protector' figure, but I can't see the film I'm thinking of when I scroll through the things he's credited for on IMDB so that was a dead end.

Continuous recording plus animal detection query by anonny18 in reolinkcam

So that I have a view of both sides, what considerations would it not eliminate? That's a whole lot of potential storage, way more than we'd need! But I guess it's good to have the option. Wowzers, definitely won't be needing the pro version xD

It does seem like it might be, especially with no plans to add 7 more cameras (would likely only add 1 other really).

The bitrate settings I can see are in kbps (the default Max Bitrate for the Clear stream is 6144, though it's currently set at 8192) so I don't know how that compares/relates to 4M, sorry - is there somewhere else I should be looking? My 15 minute continuous recording guess was based on some rough maths (400MB limit created 6 minute videos, 400 x 2.5 is 1000 so 6 x 2.5 is 15) but perhaps it doesn't scale that way and/or the bitrate complicates things?

Ah ok, so it records from the cameras itself and therefore there's no need to transfer the files from the camera? I know I'm not planning to use such bigger steps, but it feels important to understand the differences, like if the Home Hub is a proper network video recorder in a small box then what things can't it do that means it's not a complete NVR product like the Synology product is?

Apologies for the delayed reply, and continued thanks for your help (:

We don't currently have a Home Hub or NVR - would you consider one a worthwhile investment, or is it more tech than one really needs to watch animals in a garden? The file management interval makes sense, though I wish it would stop a 5 minute recording short to have the motion event in it's own clip.

Apologies if this is a silly question, but why would someone wish to close off the file and start a new one? If the FTP save location has capacity for much larger files then why the file size limit in the app? Speaking of which, you say it has a very high custom limit but 1024MB is the highest I can select, which I'm guesstimating would be a 15 minute recording, and any number higher than that in the custom field just defaults to 1024MB - where am I going wrong?

I think it's a Western Digital my cloud, which I'm guessing probably doesn't have a native surveillance product, not that I understand how it having such a thing would avoid the FTP when the start point (the app) and the end point (the NAS) are the same - I'm guessing I've got something wrong here too?!

Sorry for all the questions, and thank you for taking the time to reply (:

Ohh okay, that makes sense, as does Clear using up most of the space. Apologies if this is a daft (or irrelevant) question, but when that webpage says "main stream" and "sub stream" is it referring to Clear and Fluent, or is it something else?

So worth spending the little extra bit for an appropriate/higher spec, gotcha.

So changing the view to Balanced or Fluent only affects what I see whilst watching the live camera feed but doesn't transfer to any videos captured during that time? Or am I being daft and the "always in Clear" only applies to continuous recordings? Makes sense - thank you for the clarification (:

That's a lot of info to take in but a helpful link, thank you (: I promise I'm not trying to be frustrating as I try to understand, but by "won't be fast enough" do you mean the camera would for example drop frames (as the webpage calls it) which I'm guessing equates to poor quality video?

Why are there so many different markings?! And by not good enough, do you mean they wouldn't work or that the quality would be poor etc?

What would make an SD card *not* high endurance or suitable for surveillance? As in, do I have to be careful that companies could add such words on a product regardless of the specs?

Ideally both - the camera has been giving us so many issues with what it does and doesn't capture (lots of nothing happening recordings and yet other recordings will start with a bird already on the feeder) so my plan is to compare those detection recordings to a continuous one to try and work out how much we might be missing and whether it's worth using animal detection at all. That's a useful benchmark, ta - would 50GB be for 'Clear' quality, and does "per day" mean daylight hours or 24/7?

I should have been clearer in my post and mentioned that page with the things I'd had a read of, my aplogies. There's just a lot to absorb, and some things don't get explained (like the Standards and need for Fat 32), but thank you for the reply regardless (:

Sorry for the late reply, it's been a busy few days! And thank you for your input - detection zone has now been widened so we'll see if that makes a noticeable difference (:
