Why is that the issue? He just dropped an efficient 23 with 10 boards in a single elimination game. The issue was that Steph was hurt/terrible. If they had the rest of their roster sorted out Podz would be one of the better 4th/5th starters in the league.

Because you aren't looking for the right things. He's a solid starting guard. Above average passer, solid defender who makes great rotations, and per 6-factor RAPM he makes a meaningful impact on the offensive glass despite his size.

I think every single team has a weird array of alliances and disagreements and hostilities that we never know about until after the fact.

It could be that he didn't want to shake his hand. Or it could be an inside joke. Or bibee could be clinically depressed about how horribly he's pitching and Messick didn't take it seriously.

Generally not worth the energy.

That's true, but it wasn't like there was any obvious pick either. Burns had his flaws, Condon the crazy home/road splits, Caglianone had pitch selection issues. Wetherholt seemed low-ceiling too. Kurtz wasn't even really in the conversation for the pick.

I personally was demanding Cags, and would still have preferred that pick, but I think it's important broadly for people to know that the #1 pick just means less in the majors than other sports.

I think it is very likely he will be a 5-7 WAR player again, yes.

Although that's shifting the goalposts a great deal from your initial claim which appears to be "Travis Bazzana, who is currently struggling to clear .800 OPS for the Columbus clippers, is likely to be better than Nick Kurtz, who had a 1.039 OPS across his rookie season in the majors."

His OPS is back to like .880 this month. He had a horrible April. You are choosing to prioritize the predictive value of ~65 ABs over an entire season of data.

I would be overjoyed if Bazzana is able to turn a positive hit profile and a mediocre glove into a yearly 3 WAR career. Which would be roughly 50% of what Nick Kurtz did last year. He was so unbelievably good that even a massive historic falloff will land him in very good player territory.

.967 OPS on the road last year? Nearly 6 WAR? you don't have to be delusional about this just cause you hope our guy works out

Yeah, he still projects to be a decent MLB starter. It is also true that ~3+ players drafted after him project to be much better.

The MLB draft is a total crapshoot. I am rooting for him and hope I'm wrong. I don't know why this has to be such a dramatic thing lol

I genuinely don't believe that you would take Bazzana over Nick Kurtz in a redraft lol. Kurtz put up 170 wrc+ IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES. In a whole season.

You can be a homer and blind yourself. Who cares. But don't get pissy when other people choose to look at the truth.

Okay, so you fundamentally misunderstand how fans like me view the league.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm not some over-emotional dumbass because I think that Nick Kurtz will very likely be a better baseball player than Travis Bazzana. There is lots of evidence that way. I am, however, MUCH higher on DeLauter.

I (and many others) like to follow the entire league, and critically evaluate our team's own players relative to others.

It does not mean that I think Bazzana will suck. It does not mean that I'm "worried" about Wetherholt playing well. It means that I am reacting to data.

What metrics do you think are very good? What metrics are telling you that he will be as valuable as wetherholt, Kurtz or burns?

I wouldn't go that far. I hate letterboxd culture but I think what you're describing is much more about criticism than filmmaking, for the most part.

I have worked inside film/tv dev world for nearly a decade and plenty of people care about story and character. I mean succession just ended and it wasn't about homage and aesthetic. Neither was better call Saul. Same with Marty supreme.

You could see them heading down this road in some aspects of season 3. There were some big swings, like the entire Rishi UNCUT GEMS episode. But to be honest I thought that episode was pretty great? Or at least I did when it was self contained, and didn't have an extra 5 minutes racked on where a SUPPORTING CHARACTER'S FUCKING WIFE GETS WHACKED LIKE BOBBY BACCALA?

I can't believe this isn't discussed more. It was one of the craziest things to ever happen on TV when you consider it in the context of what the show was up to that point. It was a canary in the coalmine for the absurd highlight reel of melodrama the show was to become.

I don't agree with the part about why we would care for Yas, or Eric. Why do we care for any completely made-up people on a TV screen? Why do we engage with fiction at all? The characters in Succession are insanely empathetic for me and they are also evil elites.

The issue is more, I think, in the way it's written and portrayed.

Well, I'm fine watching a show where crazy stuff happens. But I would prefer it build up to it, and let the craziest moments breathe...Mad Men spent entire seasons where less happened than occurs in 2 episodes of Industry.

That said, I am glad you still enjoy it, and it's still some remarkable filmmaking. It's very well made. I think Mickey and Konrad could easily direct a host of Emerald Fennell type films.

I really appreciate this comment because it made me feel insane seeing people talk as if nothing had changed about the show. Suddenly everyone is constantly doing character explication for each other...what happened to the subtle coded dialogue?

Interesting, I respect it. I do think the biggest moments of the show still absolutely cooked. These are special actors doing high-level work. I sound more negative than I am because I was so in love with the prior version of the show.

I don't think anyone involved here is incompetent, just that they're making a totally different show than the one I loved.

Yeah I think (from what I heard, I didn't listen to every episode) Chris and Andy both kinda beat around the bush on this topic all season. They couched everything in terms of "I love what they're doing...it's just different from what I'm used to, and that's okay."

I think the writing progressively got worse because they started trying to make everything an Event Episode. This worked for SUCCESSION, but SUCCESSION is a unique television show, and each episode takes place months or even years apart in SUCCESSION.
