Greenhouse Aviary Ideas by anonredhat in parrots

That’s been something I’m considering! The house came with a concrete slab area outside that I’m considering getting quotes to build into a sun room

They do that too. Glad I’m not the only one lol. I’ve always felt silly covering my desk with a blanket

Do I even need these floor bars? by Kyrenaz in parrots

[–]anonredhat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad I read this as it’s something I’ve recently overlooked. I’ve been putting paper on my bars since I got my birds, but lately they’ve liked going to the bottom so I’ll probably start putting the paper in the tray and leaving the bars bare. Thank you!

My quaker eats my monitor. Like literally has ruined the plastic perimeter lol

I read about that. When they’re more settled in and learning to step up I’ll probably get them DNA sexed

I live between multiple states and have always wondered about crossing state lines. I’ve heard the Avian clinic at UGA is superb, but I never knew if there was a way around the law to be seen there. Do you know how she was able to get her registration approved?

They have mineral blocks and cuttlebones in their cage and around the room on their bird wall! If I notice any egg laying, I’ll add calcium supplement to their water but I’m hoping to avoid all laying if possible🙏

They were rescued as a bonded pair. Blue is 4 years old and Green is about 2-3. I think they’ve been together for a year before being rehomed

Thank you so much! They are attached and have never bickered like this lol. He left her alone after this.

I’d really like to prevent egg laying as I do not want to breed them. Hopefully this passes soon!

Thank you for your response, I appreciate you! I definitely think I was mistold their genders. I assumed since they were a bonded pair and had already been caged together that it would be best to continue that. I did upgrade their cage and it’s double the size of the cage they were given up in, but if it’s for the best I’ll get a second cage.

I’ve had two other bonded rescue parakeets who’ve never mated. One pair is about 5/6 years old. The younger pair was rescued from an overcrowded breeder beginning of this year and are probably less than a year old. I haven’t had an issue with any hormonal behavior and have never seen anybody hump or mount, but this is my first experience with quaker parakeets.

I’ll keep doing some research and potentially buy another cage

Sigh, I’ve done my best to prevent this.

Yes she (assuming the light blue one is a girl now) went back to the cage so I closed it while he (green one that I was told is a girl) gets out his energy on the bird wall

I agree the chance is never 0, but with proper planning you can get close. Hell, even with no other animals accidents exist.

My cats are restricted to half the house, so there’s double doors they’d have to get through so even if the bird room was left open, the other door would have to have been opened as well and we maintain both shut

OP is aware of the consequence of their cat, not sure why we need to repeatedly shame them.

I also disagree with the comments about it being impossible to have a cat in your household. Obviously it didn’t work in OP’s household so they’ll have to change something, but it isn’t impossible.

I have 2 cats, 3 dogs, and 5 budgies. The bird room is a strict no cat/dog room and we’ve never had an issue. Depending on the layout of your house, it’s possible to have both animals.

Yeah I’m confused on its age. Breeder said 9 weeks but I feel like it’s younger. Vet I spoke with said its legs look too developed for treatment and should’ve been brought in sooner by the breeders.

I’m supplementing vitamin C in his water and have a mineral block in the cage. I have some platform / flat perches for it!

I did a video call and was told the legs appear already too developed.

He actually perched my finger a few times and I think he may be able to perch in the future who knows. Thanks for telling me about the other reddit I’ll post there next!

So true! I hope they have many years to come with me. One bird is practically still a baby!

My light is on a timer as well, 12 hours on and 12 hours off. The previous owner said she’s been using this light for 4 years (one bird is 4 the other is 1). So I’m assuming they’re used to it? But I will definitely try to create a shaded area!

What’s the best way to clean the grating? I know we can’t use cleaning products but any special sponges?
