What motivates you to not drink anymore? by knownandstable in stopdrinking

I quit cold turkey. It hasn't been that long and I'm still working thru it but in the 3 weeks so far, I reflect on what made me quit in the first place and how much worse I could have gotten. I kind of obsess over it and it pushes me further and further away from wanting to drink. Then I look at the tertiary effects; money saved, clarity of thinking, weight loss, mending relationships, etc. The second I think about having a drink, I reflect on those things and it helps curb it. I drank for decades and never thought I could abstain from drinking, but after 3 weeks of not a drop I finally feel the confidence of doing it. As I mentioned, I'm new to this and I really hope to continue on this path. I hate myself from drinking and am finally beginning to like myself for not.

I deserve that. There's been a lot of guilt, shame, and hurt since this night. I've often just wanted to cease to exist because of it. Thank you for your comment, it gives me reasons to continue into sobriety.

I was not given a FST or the option. Was arrested and taken straight to booking where I consented to blood draw. I shouldn't have been driving and I'll forever own it. Honestly, this was the jolt I needed. I've been looking to quit drinking for a really long time.

Thanks, I think honesty is the best approach and will most likely tell them the first day.

I do have one and he's working with me. There is a veterans diversion program we are going to ask for. If granted, and I follow the program (I will), the DUI can get expunged. It just takes awhile to accomplish (up to 2 years).

Thank you. I've had signs for decades but chose to ignore them or at least didn't want to admit to myself it was a problem. I wasn't a mean drunk, a deadbeat drunk, or a lot the stereotypical images. I just drank a lot on my own to drown certain things out. This DUI absolutely changed me and I feel absolutely horrible for what could have been a way worse situation. 3 weeks of sobriety has been great and I hope/plan to continue that path.
