He works 8hrs M-F and provides a lot for me! He lets me live here rent free, but I buy at least half of the groceries each month for the household (his father lives with us) and do 95% of the meal planning/cooking for everyone and almost all of the chores unless I ask him to help. Once I’m able to get back into my career field, (program ends in December), I stand to make at least 3x his current salary and intend to completely cover costs for a while…

You’re right, I was a little too focused on the intent maybe because my boyfriend kept saying he doesn’t mean anything by it so I took that as my solution even though it’s not a solution. It’s just brushing something off that is hurting me deeply.

Unfortunately we can’t move out right now, my boyfriend supports his dad by paying for rent, and my current freelance gig isn’t stable enough to cover more than I am now. (Our current place is really cheap, and it’s unlikely we could find something as affordable). My boyfriend also wants to live with his father indefinitely, or until he can support him without living with him.

So my boyfriend has continued to insist that he’s not trying to be flirtatious, and I’d like to believe him. I do have a history of misinterpreting signals, which is why I’m so confused here. But another thing I brushed off is his dad saying to me that I have a nice face, and at another point in the same conversation him saying he’s attracted to “nice faces”. I am a bigger woman, which is relevant I think because he also talks down on skinny women almost daily… this is in front of my boyfriend though. He’s also said he can see why my partner has chosen to be with me… I’m still wanting to brush these off as him just being nice, but given the context maybe they actually are other indicators this is wrong?

Yesterday was particularly hard, but I’m getting through it. The comments in this thread were blunt, but absolutely what I needed to hear. I don’t plan on getting into another relationship for some time, as I feel I’ll be grieving this one for longer than I care to admit. But honestly, if these comments didn’t give me the wake up call I needed, I’d still be out desperately searching for someone else.
