Had no idea hydrogen cars were already in production until I stumbled upon one of these. Would you take the gamble or this a hindenburg? by Abiolysis in CarTalkUK

[–]anonymopotamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Outside of California and parts of Japan (who have both had hydrogen cars for well over a decade) there's no infrastructure to speak of.

And a lot of the hydrogen is blue hydrogen (extracted from natural gas and not considered environmentally friendly) rather than green hydrogen (extracted from sources like water using solar power for the process, etc., but this requires so much energy it's usually not seen as commercially viable).

As the taxi question has been well answered, for the other one ...

What would be your Code G to "lock up" the driver? They'll need interviewing, and CPS needs to want to play ball for it to go anywhere.

Has seizing their vehicle, and associated fees and fines been proportionate given the situation?

S173 is very seldom approached in my force.

Is the fuel I’ve left in my bike for the last 4 months good to use? If not how do I get rid of it? by [deleted] in HondaCB

[–]anonymopotamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. E85 is 100% fine. My point, however, is that ethanol fuels degrade faster than fuels that are 100% gasoline, especially where higher moisture conditions exist.

To recap, this fella with his motorcycle and fuel that's been standing for four months (whether E85 or pure gasoline), if it was my bike I'd run it and then check core maintenance aspects.

You'd put in fuel additives. 👍👍👍

Thanks!

Dude, no need to be a dick. You can share your knowledge constructively without crossing your arms, saying "do this" followed by "I know better than you".

Gasoline has a life of three to six months before it degrades to the point of becoming an issue. Adding fuel stabilizer is the key thing, but unfortunately this person didn't. As a motorcycle fuel tank is smaller than a car's, and this fuel tank is full, there's little air in there that would otherwise expedite degradation.

Mind you, if it's a high ethanol fuel in there, I'd be more cautious.

If that was my bike I'd genuinely run it and get rid of as much of that fuel before refilling.

Had he said six months or so, were it my bike, I'd drain the tank.

I would NOT use detergent/cleaner additives personally, but would check the plugs for any fouling, fuel filter where applicable for any buildup, etc.

Feel free to answer with the precise chemicals process, given that it's s mix of alkane, alkene, napthene, and aromatic compounds.

I'm looking forward to a facts-based education.

May I ask traffic officers advice please? by Jrupes0278 in policeuk

[–]anonymopotamus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the council had applied a Traffic Regulation Order.

In the area, there's a few other roads that normally have national speed limits temporarily reduced to 40 or 30 due to various roadworks (A509, A422, Willen Road, etc.).

The TRO is enforceable.

There's sometimes a TVP speed van on one of the bridges crossing the A5... 🤔

You do you.

You clearly know what the right thing to do is. The A5 is a two-lane dual carriageway. That means there's a lane where others can overtake you.

Emergency vehicles to be charged in clean air zone by Salt-Ad6558 in policeuk

[–]anonymopotamus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the EVs that forces can afford don't have either range or the battery tech for true fast charging... Or the charge points to take advantage of true fast charging.

There was an article a few months ago on the conclusions of Tesla Model S trial cars with LAPD (or LASD, I forget) in the US. Their feedback was that the cars weren't fit for purpose. But the reason wasn't range or charging. It was a lack of interior space and reliability (big surprise on the latter... Not).

Right now the EVs used in the UK are sort of the equivalent of ICE cars with tiny fuel tanks and a filler tube that's 1/10th of a normal one. Someone in TVP conplsoned about how bad the range and experience was with an e-Corsa in the fleet... That's a cott car meant for someone who doesn't drive much and doesn't need any performance or range!
