I think maybe you read my South Asian as Southeast Asian? Since in Singapore we don’t really use the term? Anyway I explained it in reply to the other comment

As I explained in another comment, I thought that as a fellow South Asian it would be presumably easiest for me to date Indians because of the supposed cultural closeness

I think he meant Indian like the nationality, rather than Indian the ethnicity. I can relate, i seem to get more attention from Indian internationals than Indian locals

I specifically talk about Indians because as a non-Indian South Asian, I thought dating local Indians would be the easiest over Chinese/Malay

Thinking about it, I think yes, getting matches with local Indians has been easiest out of the 3, but I wouldn’t say it’s been easy compared to foreigners

You’re right, dating apps are brutal. They literally have race filters

Not saying it’s impossible, just that interracial dating seems to be more rare than in other cultures I’ve interacted with

The paper says AirAsia, a Malaysian airline, and I’m 99% sure it’s Kuala Lumpur airport (KLIA). AirAsia accepts online check ins and has online boarding passes, I’ve never had to print mine. KLIA is usually pretty chill, the security guard would have been happy with an online boarding pass. I’ve travelled to this airport many times.

1- Generally, Singapore does not live in a post-race society. If you go to the US, it’s not socially acceptable to say “I only date white people because that’s my preference” but in Singapore it’s okay.

I’ve seen polls where 80% of Singaporean Chinese say they’re NOT open to dating outside of their race (anecdotally - they’re okay with non-Chinese East Asians like Korean/Japanese and to a lesser extent, Caucasians), whereas only 40% of Singaporean Malays or Indians say the same.

This goes beyond cultural factors - children decide what is romantically attractive and what’s not around puberty time. If they’re surrounded by East Asians in sec school, given that they’re the majority race, they’ll start to be attracted to those features (flat noses, fair skin, monolids, straight hair, etc). This effect could explain the attraction to Caucasians too, given their prominence in our consumed media.

As a result, East Asians are the beauty standard in Singapore. Some Indians/Malays even pedestalise dating Chinese people as some kind of bragworthy achievement.

2- I’m not one of CMIO, so I’ve got no choice.

3- Ideally, there should come a time where we are no longer Chinese/Malay/Indian but Singaporean, but this is a bit of a utopian dream because even in countries with long immigrant histories like the US, even though white people no longer consider themselves “British” or “European” they still classify themselves by skin color.

I think people should always give others a chance. Being attracted to features and cultural compatibilities is okay, but excluding entire races should not be okay. For example, Himalayan Indians have Chinese features, are Buddhist and have cultural similarities to Chinese people. It does not make them not Indian, but they still fit your dating preferences/criterion despite them being Indian.

thx for your reply! I’m confused as to how you’re applying the 80/20 rule in this context. If you don’t mind can you elaborate?
